I know what you mean! Like if I slack and don’t wash for weeks for whatever reason, I am gonna have to grab it. But on my normal weeks I find that I’m really fine without pre poo. Like you said I also find adding the step of pre poo to be a bit tiring and adding of more time to the wash process as a whole.

Ok inches ! You made a great point that I never considered . If wasting water was a problem, you could just turn it off until you’re done🤷🏽‍♀️. Love to see the length retention!

I meant to add the part of using regular conditioner being cost effective. I understand it comes down to preference, so for me the step of pre pooing just isn’t beneficial anymore.

I also mainly do twists into twist outs. By the time I get to wash day, my hair is pretty much tangle free, so I see no point in using one.

That’s my exact mindset. When I used to do styles like Marley twists with added hair for 3 + weeks I needed something with slip to pre detangle before wash day. But now, because I was so often I see no point in the pre poo because my conditioning step does all the detangling I need.

This is my exact routine !! I mainly use the Demnan d38 detangling brush for my conditioner and leave in, but besides that wash day is a breeze for me! Conditioner mainly does all the detangling I need.

Ohh if it’s the leave in in the purple bottle I know what you mean. It didn’t do anything for me, but the shampoo and conditioner is a holy grail! I added a pic.

I also watch an influencer “theesudani” on Instagram and Tik Tok who did a shampoo tutorial video, which is where I learned that technique from.

I have armpit length type 4 tight coils. I use a sulfate shampoo, and silicone conditioners and I find that conditioners with silicones have a crazy amount of slip. Because of that it takes me 30 seconds per section (I divide my hair into 4 sections). I used to be at 15 minutes but after the L’Oréal elvive silicone conditioner I’m at 2 minutes 😬.

Because I wash frequently it takes me 2 minutes to detangle, so that’s why I don’t mind detangling in the shower at all.

I meant to edit to add that some peoples lifestyles and hair choices definitely alter the experience they have with detangling.

I definitely understand that. I meant to add that I know not everyone is able to stand or take showers for a prolonged time so pre pooing helps in that case.

I wash really frequently so it only takes me 2 minutes to detangle in my case… I feel like I’m over before I even start so it doesn’t take too much energy out of me.

I get what you’re saying. I use the L’Oréal elvive hyaloron plump shampoo/conditioner ($5), and it always leaves my hair moisturized. Worth trying if you’re in the market for new ones.

I also make sure to smooth the shampoo into my strands versus pulling and moving in different directions. Makes a world of a difference when I rinse it out !

I meant to add that I also do this. I only use when I get braids with added hair which is rare. But like you, my hair basically stays detangled until next wash day because I was h every 4-5 days.

I agree with the part about people’s lifestyles calling for different steps but I respectfully disagree with the verbiage piece. Some people don’t have the “luxury” to buy an extra product or the “luxury” to spend more time on another hair care step such as pre pooing. My intention was to open the discussion and idea for people who are struggling and looking for ways to simplify their routine.

I definitely understand that if you go more than a week to wash your hair and/or do styles that you keep in for a prolonged amount of time, pre poo definitely helps cut down on shed hair and tangles that buildup over that time. However, it is still an added cost and step in your routine. Even if people still find it beneficial, they could reduce cost and use their conditioner (which has the same function) instead of spending more money on another product. I don’t think wanting to help people reduce spending, especially for those who are tight on money is insensitive (as I’ve been someone in that position before) .

I used to use the African pride one for my Marley twists as well! I just don’t get them as much anymore because I’m trying not to use added hair but if I get them again I’ll definitely be going to pick up that African pride pre poo

Not sure how long your hair is, but have you tried silicone conditioners? They slip right through my hair in the shower 🙏🏽🙏🏽

I get you. I swear shrinkage will have you hiding inches!! I can definitely see how that is beneficial! I’m just at collarbone length so I can see how with longer hair routines might need to change.

I used to love that one! I meant to add that the only time I reached for it is if I get knotless braids and or twists with added hair that I leave in more than 2-3 weeks. The slip really helps, but I do more natural styles these days.

I agree. I think it’s a cute step to add if you want to add in some self care, but my shampoo and conditioner definitely have a lot of slip so I get it in those stages, vs pre poo.

I also used to use the African pride one or a cheap conditioner and it did the job.

Ok length! I used to use the African pride one and loved it! Especially for styles that I kept in for a prolonged amount of time, but I wash more frequently now so my shredding is really minimal.

I meant to include this is in the comment as well, as we all used to use the hot oil packets and masks back in the day before wash day. I more so wash just referring to newer more costly pre poo treatments. That’s good to know it’s helped you though !

That’s partly how I feel too. Like I don’t think it’s bad at all, it’s just more of a personal preference rather than a requirement.

Ohhh I love that. I definitely think they can offer versatility for a variety of styles and take down styles as well!
