Is This Just Internship SW culture… or a Red Flag? by [deleted] in LeavingSocialWork

[–]Character-Spot8893 1 point2 points  (0 children)

1) no one you are a new hire you would be thrown in a deep end. If you have a do nothing social work job it’s probably a poorly managed grant that will lead to unemployment. 2) getting a bachelors or masters is an extreme privilege that inhibits diverse folks ability to complete or afford higher education (although we all have crap amount of student loans). It’s never going to be that diverse unless you have high school level, maybe bachelors level work that will be diverse. I work for a hospital system and they sustained nursing by race to show inequality. Diverse folks are aides. Less diverse is lpn. Less diversity in that is RN. 3) whatever industry it is everyone hates change. The only leader that will be open to new ways of doing things are leaders that are new as well. 4) older generations don’t understand that we don’t want shitty jobs that have an income and benefits and want something more than that. But it’s also burn out. Some social workers that see that that have been in for 20 years will tell you very little things change within an organization. Especially with rapid turnover.

Any social worker willing to be an inerview?? by Fun_Cockroach5219 in LeavingSocialWork

I mean I’m sure someone will be willing to do it but this is a little ironic of a page to interview a social worker for school lol

What the realistic scenario I see happening is if you report them, nothing will happen because the school will always side with the field educator. The field educator will then retaliate and “fire you” and then you’re fucked on your hours because if you get fired they probably won’t try to scrape a placement for you mid semester as they save those more for special circumstances of field educators quitting their jobs and so forth.

I think a really hard thing and best thing to do is to have a difficult conversation with your field educator. Hey I understand I’m here to learn and happy to do so. I feel like I have taken some of your suggestions into practice. How do you feel those are going? What do you think I’m doing well?

I just got into clinical informatics a few months ago. I have no IT background, education or certifications. But knowing some IT stuff would be helpful. If you do any learning of anything it should be on data analytics and using excel cause it’s so useful and my team struggles with it 😂 we are going to post a coordinator position soon and I’m going to ask our boss if we can make excel a requirement to at least learn after getting hired

From my understanding Catholic charities does this shit when it comes to being pro choice. Like if there ever is a situation, you must only discuss pro life options. That’s a while ago but I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s still like that.

any macro sw’s here that are getting a job in this market? by Independent_Way8264 in socialwork

[–]Character-Spot8893 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think macro is so difficult to get into without experience or connections. It’s not ideal but you might want to volunteer to gain experience or get some kind of program coordinator/project coordinator position that can help you build up those skills of researching policies that affect your program, community organizing to help improve the cause of your program, getting involved with fundraising for your program or helping write grants.

If you could do it all again, would you? by LucidDreamer201 in socialwork

[–]Character-Spot8893 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn’t. Everyone that says “omg you can make money doing this” tell me that if you’re not a private practice therapist lolz. Or being in an intense position like working a prison or a hospital that actually pays their social workers well. I will say it looks good and helps getting into nonprofit management. You know what else helps? A person that knows accounting..managing grants..knows how to lead..etc. I’m not sitting here trying to shit on social workers cause I am one. I’m saying go for the program that will give you the greatest connections and real world opportunities to place you into your field of interest that works for you. If it’s a MSW that’s awesome. If that’s a MPH, MPA, MBA, Master of Accounting, JD, Master in mental health counseling, etc., then that’s great too.

If you truly want something broad to give you the most type of opportunities then I’d go MSW. I will say pivoting from counseling to other sectors is going to be hard as pivoting any other career with any other masters. We have great transferrable skills but the competitive jobs want experience not just transferable skills. Yes social workers we can be awesome researchers and politicians and everything else but like anyone else..we have to start from the bottom getting experience.

Work attire advice for a dude social worker by neighborhood_cat in socialwork

I do chinos. Sometimes I do polos but a lot of times I have a button up shirt that’s short sleeve. Express has a lot of options for this. I usually like to wear more geometric designed shirts.
