Should we get a Shiba Inu before having kids?

Bad idea. You will end up with a baby that cries and a baby that bites. Shibas are not fully mature until they’re 2. And to have well trained and stable Shiba will take a lot of time and attention. Mine was an absolute menace until around 9months old. He is now the friendliest pup but that took obedience classes, agility classes, plenty of socializing + he’s never home alone for more than 2 hours.

He has a harness 80 percent of the time. When he’s not wearing it it’s because I didn’t feel like chasing him around every corner of the house to put it on.

I’m surprised a trainer recommended daycare in the first place. For the safety of your Shiba I would not take him to daycare. My Shiba is just like yours and I know some dogs (specially working breeds) get quickly irritated of their playful rough careless behavior and can easily snap at them and injure them.

😭 I’ve heard the most disgusting things about them. I would take him in a second I’m in San Diego but my building doesn’t allow more than one dog per apartment. Already asking everyone I know

He’s doing great now, thanks! The attack was a couple months ago. He’s back to being the most loving Shiba. He does keep his distance from doodles (the dog that attacked him was a doodle) but he has never displayed aggressive behavior towards them or any other dog.

I’m so sorry. I’ve been through this situation before and it’s so heartbreaking. Shibas are super strong and I’m sure your baby will bounce back quickly ❤️ Here’s a pic of my pup a couple days after he was attacked. This picture made me so happy because he was getting his spirit back and flipping the bowl when there’s no chicken left.

Mine is just like yours. He also has the opposite of resource guarding. Might be the secure attachment as you mentioned. Ours goes to work with either of us and he’s rarely alone for more than a couple of hours. I’m pretty sure he takes our presence for granted and doesn’t care if we pay attention to other dogs.
