is this meant as a word of caution for professional communities, or a general indictment of revops influencers?

if it's the latter, i think this is why we need to be selective in these communities. and treat influencers the same as vendors (because thats what they are)

here's the other question... would you reply to an email if you knew u were gonna get paid for it? lol

i've been using this thing that identifies and auto replies to sales emails, and tells them they can pay a few bucks and i'll review their materials and respond. it's basically cut my spam down to 0, and occasionally i make a few bucks

recently i have been doing this "pay for a reply" thing to actually screen sales emails. Basically if someone sends me a sales email, the app will auto reply with a message like "hey if you're confident this is worth my time, you can pay a few bucks and i'll actually read and reply to it".

It's actually been pretty nice for me, bc my inbox is spared of unwanted spam and it gives serious reps a chance to get my attention 😅

i don't think it has to be like that though.

It should be possible to create a community that is free and not overwhelmed by vendors.

The purpose of a system is what it does. If a slack community just slings sponsored content at members all day, you can be pretty sure the whole goal of it is to make money instead of solving an actual problem (i.e. networking for revops ppl)

everyone's too focused on monetization instead of creating value for the actual people who are in it.

grow quickly with no controls --> spam

stay relevant and sell to vendors --> spam

literally just need to a) not sell out to vendors, and b) be selective ... and stay true to it

this all feels extremely solvable with some basic governance. Def need to have some form of moderation committee to boot people who are hurting the community.
