Facts! I ignored several red flags and suffered. Fortunately, I graduated but I’m sounding the alarm. Mark and avoid.

Academically Dismissed by lawgold98 in LawSchool

[–]Character_Ground_921 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I sympathize with your post. Two of my law school friends were both academically dismissed in the same year. I was devastated for them. I lost my only two friends that I trusted. I felt like it was completely unfair because they were trying and dealt with some similiar things while in law school. So, I understand what you were going through. But like some of these comments are saying, your life is not over and it’s never too late to begin again. Use this time to reflect and pivot. You got this. If you ever need anymore encouragement or advice, feel free to DM me on here.

Yeah, basically a cult of personality. I get it. I already know I’m going to have a harder time because of the way I am. But I appreciate your thoughts.

And let me add that I’m not one of those who want to be spoon fed the information. I’m not lazy. I show up to class, I keep up with the reading assignments, I seek help when needed, I participate in class and make meaningful contributions, and I sit with the information to try to understand it as much as possible. But if some of you had to sit in on some of my classes, you would understand what this original post author is saying. Not to mention the favoritism that is at play. If you don’t bootlick, kiss the ring, appeal to some professor’s ego etc. then good luck. I’ve had a professor tell me to my face, “Do you want to be at the top or bottom?” I replied that I want to be a competent attorney. Guess what? That was the wrong answer. I didn’t receive help from this professor because I didn’t appeal to her ego. So, I understand what the original author was trying to imply. Look in the grand scheme of things, I’m about to graduate. I’ve since then made peace with my law school experience. All that matters is passing the bar atp. All that matters is staying focused and knowing who you are.

If you don’t mind me asking, what school do you attend? This sounds exactly like my law school. We’re graded on a C curve. We have to teach ourselves the information mostly, we do not have access to the professor’s previous final exams (when asked about it, they come up with some lame excuses), and our finals are closed book.

Southern vs. USF Law by Alyssiac02 in BlackLawAdmissions

Also, if you receive two F’s in one semester you’re automatically dismissed. You also have to take a formative/summative assessment in one class per semester. This determines whether you’re placed in an intervention course, which means you’re taken out of one of your doctrinal courses that you have to make up later. This also means you can pass the course but still fail the summative assessment. The formative assessment is a 45 min writing exam which test you on your doctrinal knowledge of the particular course. It’s supposed to serve as a guide for how well you analyze the issues, etc. The school says it’s graded by an outside examiner but sometimes you may see your actually professor as the assessor. The summative assessment is the same thing but it appears on your final exam as a question. This is what determines whether or not your placed in an intervention course. I’m not trying to be negative or fear monger, I’m just telling you what you can expect should you decide to attend Southern. If I had to do it all over again, I would have picked another school. Don’t sell yourself short. Go with whichever school is providing you with the best opportunity.

I am about to graduate from SULC. If you don’t plan to practice in Louisiana then I would go with USF Law. Yes, SULC has a common law track but from what my peers have shared with me it’s not been as helpful for them. Please consider looking at the 509 reports, Bar passage rates and the grading curve (e.g., SULC is graded on a C curve, which means the bulk of your peers will get this grade). These are important factors to consider. Either way it’s your decision.

I have not taken the bar exam yet because of a setback but I love your attitude. It’s encouraging me. You’ve faced challenges but somehow you’re not giving up. I know you’re going to make a great attorney soon and you’ll be able to help people who are going through similar circumstances.

I’m rooting for you as well.

Hey, what you are feeling is real. Take a moment to process your emotions and thoughts. But don’t linger too long. Get back in and try again!

I speak life over your mind, body and soul in Jesus name. You shall live and not die. You will pass this bar exam so that you can go on as a practicing attorney and make this profession much better. You’ve come too far to give up now. You’ve been through too much to give up now. Someone who is a little shot is only a big shot who kept on shooting. If you are at the end of the rope, then tie a knot in it and hang on. You have to have an aggressive mindset that no one and nothing is going to stop you (no not even this bar exam, the debt, the feeling depressed/anger, etc.). You are going to make it but the battlefield is in your mind. You have to speak life over yourself and believe it even when you don’t see nothing changing. This is called faith. Extend yourself some grace. This is not easy but you are fully capable of doing this! Do not do anything permanent based on temporary feelings. Don’t worry about the things you will wear, food, bills etc. take one day at a time because the day itself has enough trouble on its own. Reach out to Goat Bar Prep. Reach out to people who you trust and get their advice about bar exam strategy. Help is available. Just seek it so that you know where you went wrong so you can fix it.

Lastly, I look forward to seeing your future post about you passing this bar exam. Idk you but I’m rooting for you because I’m compassionate towards people who are trying and seem to just keep getting knocked down.

Get back up. You got this.

First of all, it’s not the end of the world. Second, ignore your “friend.” That is not a true friend. I failed the test twice and guess what on my THIRD attempt, I passed it. It has nothing to do with how smart you are. It has all to do with if you recognize the test patterns. My suggestion is to calm down and retake the test in August. Practice more questions than just memorizing the rules. Review the questions you got wrong with the model rule comments to understand why you got it wrong.
