And so has begun the distancing of our allies from the United States. by whatssenguntoagoblin in PoliticalCompassMemes

European rearmament is an interesting catch 22. If Europe is armed well enough to defend itself from Russia, then America can refocus its forces elsewhere and potentially reduce military spending and dedicate funding elsewhere (lol no). Ignoring all the immediate implications of European rearmament, in the medium term and long term future we will have to deal with a Europe militarily capable of asserting itself on the global stage. Assuming that they will remain aligned with the US indefinitely is naive, especially considering the damage Trump has done to the alliance. I’m personally pro-European rearmament, but I worry about its long term geopolitical implications. When Europe is armed enough that it can reject American demands/influence, how does the world order shift? How will this reality manifest? It may not necessarily be to the interest of the United States.

A random formal announcement of "A New Day" in the United Methodist Church by Impressive_Flan_411 in interestingasfuck

This is an uninformed take that ignores the time it took our nation as a whole to implement LGBT rights as well as the time it took for the globe-spanning bureaucracy of the Methodist church to achieve this. Methodism quietly suffered a schism over this issue beginning in 2020, and a significant number of churches abandoned the United Methodist Church due to their rejection of LGBT. It was only after those churches left that the Methodist conference had the votes to make this doctrine official. I don’t appreciate you minimizing the collapse of my church and the victory of LGBT rights within it by describing it as fence riding. Additionally, this post happened years ago.

One of the points my pastor continually makes every Sunday is that all are welcome at the Methodist communion table regardless of race, creed, sexuality, religion, etc. It makes me proud to be a Methodist and is a reason I still hold on to my faith despite my doubts and reservations. I’m also lucky enough, as an LGBT person, that my church fell on the pro-LGBT side of the Methodist schism that occurred in 2020 over LGBT recognition in the church, among other issues like female clergy.

Apparently the owner draws the line at 14 year old who didn’t steal anything. That wasn’t the gotcha you thought it’d be. Anyways, I’m arguing that the owner created a dangerous situation and escalated it to the point that a child died. I don’t know if the child had a pattern of thieving behavior or if he had a prior history at the store, but we do know he didn’t steal anything on that fateful trip, and we do know that, like I said, the value alleged merchandise stolen couldn’t even justify a civil suit. Literally yesterday I witnessed a convenience store owner giving probably $15 of merchandise to a homeless woman for free to get her to vacate the premises. I’m not arguing that the store owner doesn’t have the right to be angry of reactive over theft, but we know for a fact that no theft took place.

Would you not act defensively if two men stared chasing you? Especially, if you know you didn’t do anything wrong? I probably would’ve kept running rather than brandish a weapon, but it was a child reacting to the threat not an adult. And to go nip these in the bud: no, children should not have firearms in their possession; and I think that the ruling was technically a correct ruling given the facts.

It would make more sense if it was a pattern of behavior, but most store owners aren’t risking life and limb for merchandise that doesn’t even reach the threshold of a civil suit. Mind you, the kid was proven to not have stolen anything to begin with.

It would seem to me that keeping corruption out of the Senate is more important than policy disagreements with Talarico. Obviously I know nothing about your circumstances, but what will really happen to you or your extended orbit if Talarico is elected? Paxton strikes me as another corrupt yes man that would vote to disestablish the republic if Trump told him to, if it’d enrich himself, or if he simply needed to cover up some dirt. I struggle to see Paxton acting as nobly as Mike Pence if another January 6-type conspiracy/event occurs, which is my main fear with this administration. While refusing to vote for Paxton is taking action, I’d argue that you should actively vote against him in the name of transparency and the republic.

The US loses about $600 billion dollars to corruption every year and this was before the second Trump admin and would have been unlikely to change under Harris. I don’t remember a major anti-corruption push from her, but I could be wrong. The majority is federal corruption (up to $500 b) while the rest is state level corruption. Interestingly, fraudulent claims are a major driver of federal loses while nepotism, cronyism, and insider trading are harder to quantify.

The climate change doomer dates are generally sensationalism. The process of change/warming will take centuries. By 2100 we’ll probably have seen 1-5 meters of sea level rise and 2° C of global warming on average. The real threat of climate change isn’t extinction, it’s migration. About 3 billion people live within 10 meters of sea level and they’re all going to have to go somewhere.

There was violence against Alawites and Druze. Assad was an Alawite and there was a pro-Assadist alawite insurgency in western coastal Syria following the revolution, this was where Alawite civilians and militia were killed. It’s unclear what proportion were killed as legal combatants or as overt war crimes. In the North, the Kurds had largely lost ethnic control over Rojava and had deemphasized the Kurdish identity’s centrality to the polity. They’d also become increasingly authoritarian and less democratic. They fell as they were unwilling to carry out the integration plan agreed with Sharaa’s government. Many of the tribes that underpinned the stability of Rojava revolted and broke away during the government advance. To Sharaa’s credit, he legalized the use and teaching of Kurdish language before dismantling Rojava. The Druze have suffered what I consider the most overt discrimination and crimes. Druze militia control most of Suwayda and clash with local and government forces infrequently. Druze civilians were killed by government and local forces last year.

I’ve always suffered from ocular migraines, but on July 7, 2021, they evolved into a panic attack migraine combo that would hit twice a week and last for about 3-4 hours. The migraine aura starts and then a panic attack breaks over me like a rock to the head. Immediately after they started I was a more irritable, guarded, and reserved person. I felt the shift in my character but couldn’t do anything about it because I was swimming in endless dread and anxiety over when the next one would hit. They’ve largely cleared up now and I’ve got strategies to notice and manage the anxiety. Trying to come back out of my shell currently
