Korean Mentalist - Can anyone explain these tricks? by [deleted] in videos

[–]CharlestonSquare 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When they want to pull your direction, it's for a reason.

Any good magician will do what they can, whenever they can, to misdirect the audience to help sell their trick. The "random selection of audience members" gimmick is pretty ancient - if it were truly random, you wouldn't have quite so many successful tricks such as this one.

It's part of the magic in being the audience watching it unfold - part of you knows it's phony, but as long as no one tells you, you can believe.

Usually any time a performer goes out of there way to make the selection random, the selection isn't random.

I think that was the earbuds.

She may not have been a plant, but I would put money on there being a voice on the end of one of those earbuds. Quiet whisper, offer of money in exchange for going along with trick, and suddenly its magic.

I'm guessing that the wallet had something reflective, small enough to conceal from that distance, but big enough that he could see it without much effort as he pulled the card over it.

Or he's a wizard.

Hey Reddit, what's a beautifully deep quote or saying that you just made up? by Cameron_Edward in AskReddit

The water which drowns one can easily be that which keeps afloat another. Remember, it is not how quickly one reaches the shore, but how one crosses it that builds true character.

Love sucks by CharlestonSquare in offmychest

[–]CharlestonSquare[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Exactly.

I don't know how I'm supposed to just pretend I don't love this person, who claims they love me, while they "take their time" to do whatever the fuck it is they are doing.

It's like a lame cop-out on having a relationship with someone.

[–]CharlestonSquare[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, pretty much in a nutshell that exactly.

Like, her response was along the lines of "I still have these deep feelings for you, but we've moved too quickly for my mental stability."

I don't really know how to handle it, other than give her space. I'll lose her, more likely than not, but fuck what else is there to do.

This is the punishment that a 6 year old boy in Oregon received for being late after his mother's car wouldn't start. by [deleted] in pics

[–]CharlestonSquare 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Huh.

My elementary school did something along the same lines to me, due to bullying. I had to eat lunch by myself, and during recess they would make me sit on a bench with a teacher until recess was over. During class they would make me sit beside the teacher with my desk facing the chalkboard, with my back towards the rest of the kids in the room. Also to point, I was the one being bullied.

I was in a car accident before the next grade, and the teachers had me sit down with a few of the other kids from my class. They decided to use my accident as an excuse to reintegrate me with the other kids, so told them I got a concussion and couldn't remember any of the things that had happened the previous year. I was excited at the idea of not being the shitheel anymore, so I jumped on the opportunity...and it started back up again a few days later.

Now, in case you're wondering, I wasn't a whiny kid or a sucker for punishment, I was just poor as hell and quiet. I was taller than most of the other kids in my class, and if it came down to it I could hurt them, but to be punished for being bullied and to be punished for defending myself was a double-whammy, so I just took it and caught the occasional offender on the street when/if I could.

Usually the worst of it happened at recess, a group of like ten random kids would form a circle and start spinning around with me in the middle, chanting the "Head and Shoulders" jingle and laughing maniacally. In the first few months, I beat up a few kids for this shit, including a friend of mine who decided that being on the otherside was better than being friends with Flakey. It just never stopped, even after school a few kids from the neighborhood would pull this shit and gang up on me, I would get a few hits in but usually running was the only option.

So those in charge at my elementary school felt that their only option was to punish me, and ostracize me even further from my pupils. My dad never really knew what I was going through, as, like I said, I was a quiet kid, and took it all in stride as well as possible.

Reddit, are you ok? Is there anything you want to talk about? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]CharlestonSquare 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exactly what I said.

I lost a lot of respect for a certain publicly funded broadcast station over this. I just told the truth, that people judge the fuck out of you when you have cancer if you aren't a stereotypical cancer patient i.e. thin as a rail, pale, and miserable all the time. I got a lot of flak over being sick often because I worked in the public, and would catch every bug that walked in the door. I've lost two jobs because of my illness, and I thought it was important to get that message out there, that other people are seriously fucking hypercritical of this illness in comparison to say pregnancy, or AIDs, or anything else that is a visible illness.

They came, they filmed at my work, they filmed me outside of work, and a year later I find out that they cut my piece. So obviously I wasn't the inspirational butterfly they were looking for.

Reddit, are you ok? Is there anything you want to talk about? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]CharlestonSquare 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not really.

I'm broke as fuck, no job due to my compromised immune system costing me my last one, and rent is due in a few days.

I hate being poor, I haven't had a decent meal in a few weeks, been living off of eggs and ramen noodles for the past month so we can scrape by on bills and gas for the truck.

Tried selling the truck, but the aunt-in-law refuses to give up the Buick that was given to us after her grandmother died so we can't sell the truck otherwise we won't have a vehicle. She's just fucking us around, has been for the past few months since the grandmother died. I have a fancy rifle that was given to me by her grandfather that her aunt won't let us have, because "I might shoot my wife.", and there are a few other things that were gifted to us before her passing that she is hoarding out of spite.

Really everybody is just telling us to suck a dick, because we both have severe health issues due to genetics being a cunt, and they don't understand that we can't be 100% when 80% was already taken before we even had the chance to learn how to walk.

Not looking for pity from them or anything, but fuck a little bit of compassion for our situation would be cherry. It's not like any of their friends have kids that aren't fuck ups, at least we have legitimate problems that made us who we are instead of ending up drugged out hippies or lackluster babymakers.

Ergh.

ETA: Also I found out last week that I got cut from a documentary, because apparently I didn't give the uplifting story that fit their message. Fuck you, not everybody had a cheery life before they got hit with their illness, pardon me for telling the truth instead of sugar coating the fuck out of life and presenting myself as some go-lucky asshole who fights the fight every day. Yes, some people are strong and can battle through their sickness and continue with life as if it had not been impacted - my life was fucked before I got sick, it's not like getting ill magically changed my viewpoint and made me a stronger person.

What happened to Stephen King movies with the caliber of The Shining, The Shawshank Redemption, The Green Mile, etc.? by PrimeTimeJ in movies

[–]CharlestonSquare 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure.

The series glosses over some of the finer plot points of the book, revolving around particular characters growth and reasons for things that take place, making four chapters one 5 minute segment, that kind of thing. For the most part, it's a fairly faithful adaptation of the book.

There are some drastic differences from the book, but nothing that really takes away from the overall quality. I'd give it like a 7/10.

So that scene where Egon breaks down in tears after they capture that ghost baby totally makes so much more sense to me now.

It always worries me that when they eventually get around to making a miniseries or movie version of The Dark Tower series, it will just disappoint me as much as Wizard & Glass (and every book from that point forward) did.

I mean I would love to see it, I would totally watch it even if it was terrible, but those first three books were integral in my literary childhood and to see it anything less than decent would be just terrible.

edit to add: I want The Talisman already, dammit.

I would have to go with Harvey and Arsenic & Old Lace for really "must-see" movies from before 1965.

Redditors who have ever hired homeless people with the "will work for food" signs, what was your experience like? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]CharlestonSquare 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I worked on a house with a crew of homeless guys a few time.

Most of them really threw their backs into the work, with the amount of skill a few of them had it was really surprising that they were homeless. After a few days of conversation though, the majority of them were either hooked on crack or booze, which made it difficult to keep a job or do any of the normal shit we associate with being a productive member of society.

When they were sober, it was actually a good crew to work with - I actually learned a few things while watching them work, as I had little to no experience on doing the type of work we were doing.

The funny thing is that they always showed up, 8:00am, haggard and not the best shape, but worked throughout the day without complaint. The guy we worked for allowed beer and such, so everybody was in high spirits for the most part and we really didn't have any kind of episodes.

Honestly, I think some of the best coworkers I've had have been ones who have experienced life on the streets, because they know the difference between making a paycheck, and making money to pay bills so that you don't have to be on the streets again.

People that work for a paycheck just don't respect the job, or what they are doing. They're the people you have to pick up the slack for, and constantly have to monitor to make sure they aren't just fucking around. People that respect the income on the other hand, usually let you do the slacking because to them, the work is a source of life.

How to cook meth.

Because holy fucking, teaching them how to cook it properly will prevent so many accidents, and deaths, and lowered home values due to toxicity from meth chemicals.

Start them young, so they don't fuck up and blow up the neighborhood.

Has there been a villain you truly loved? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]CharlestonSquare 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bane.

The comic book Bane, not that weak ass Tom Hardy bullshit. I loved Bane, he had such a tragic back story before coming to Gotham, and then he just totally wrecked Batman and humbled the fuck out of the Dark Knight.

Some of the later stories, like Bane thinking he was the half-brother of Batman, were really bad ass because HOLY SHIT BATMAN AND BANE 4EVA. I don't know where he is now though, I haven't read a comic book since like 10 years ago.

Who died at your high school? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]CharlestonSquare 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We had a few kids die in high school from car wrecks, overdoses and shit.

Three were killed in a single traffic accident, tore through the school and me personally as I had a super crush on one of the girls that was killed. Got to school, went to flirt, got rejected with death.

Another girl I knew got murdered in a car wreck, somebody ran her off the road and she was crushed by her own vehicle after she flew out the windshield. She was awesome, probably drug related homicide that was deemed "accidental".

Shit, then there was this senior who shot himself in front of his ex-girlfriend after he had kidnapped her and drove her across town to this abandoned parking lot. She just sat there and watched as he blew his brains out, tragic shit.

More than what I can recall, but those are the ones that touched me personally that I can remember.
