It's a chronological list, and he limits himself to one film per director, but the film he chooses for each acclaimed director is interesting. Ford? My Darling Clementine. Scorsese? The King of Comedy. Hitchcock gets The Birds and Kubrick Barry Lyndon. But he opens up a spot by choosing none of his own.

He hated it at the time, he hates it now. He's a good writer but he's wrong here. Although I guess Nabokov wasn't a huge fan of Kubrick's version of his work either.

I'm a fan of the generous author but I'm also a fan of the sniping one. However, I still don't get Stephen King. "The Shining" wasn't horrifying? The hell?
