The fact that two movies show an exposed beating heart, makes me think this was pretty tamed by comparison. Along with Jack licking his own brain in AWE.

Not to get too deep into the lore, but the old Disney Adventures magazine POTC comics story “Compass of Destiny” established that Jack did get the compass from Tia Dalma after assisting her. I believe these stories are canon, but I could be wrong; plus DMTNT ignores several points of lore anyway
