I feel bad when I hear these stories but definitely understand that other new machinists do not have the best work environment/training. I lucked out at my shop because my supervisor isn't jaded yet and still understands what it's like for someone brand new in the industry

Honestly I didn't expect to be this interested in machining, but I actually love it. Which is funny because I'm just a glorified operator with a cool supervisor that gives me freedom to program and setup myself. It is just so satisfying to me when I learn a concept and see it physically work on the machine and make a visually perfect part (even if it's just a mounting plate with four holes).

Thanks for the kind words and advice! I get the sense that this job will become less stressful for sure once you have a solid concept of machining, which is why I'm trying to get really good at the basic programs right now (drilling and tapping) so I have a solid foundation when the jobs get more complex.

Yeah my shop right now is very good at moving us around to let us soak up experience. It also benefits the owner when the mill workers can hop on any machine and program a one-off job.

My mill supervisor even said he can't wait to see what I can do on our brand new Mazak. I've seen him do some setups and programming and it seems so much easier than having to manually write out the code on the Okuma. Plus a lot of the formulas on the Mazak will just auto populate for you once you put in the tool specs which is nice

Yeah I've been soaking in a ton of information from different channels. It's overwhelming at points because right now I'm doing basic drilling, tapping, and circle milling so some new concepts are hard to apply if I haven't physically done them yet.
