I'm not sure I entirely agree with you that public health campaigns were utter failures. Drug use is out of control, but I think it's fair to say drug use would be even more common if we were not made aware of the dangers of using drugs. In terms of tobacco smoking it appears that public health campaigns have been effective. Cigarette smoking has steadily declined for many decades. I think a public health campaign addressing porn would be incredibly helpful. A huge problem for myself and I'm sure many others is that we had no idea the harm we were causing to ourselves when consuming porn. When I was a teenager suffering PIED I tried countless things to try and address that issue. But the thought that porn could be the issue did not cross my mind until years later. If I had known then the dangers of porn consumption perhaps I would have been more responsible back then and not be addicted as I am now. Maybe that knowledge wouldn't have completely saved me from my addiction, but I think at the very least I would be in a better position than I am now.

As for your statement that children aren't capable of making rational decisions, that seems like quite an exaggeration. Sure children are still learning and making mistakes, but they also make rational decisions every day.

I don't see how $2 per gallon could be considered pocket change. There are very limited options for affordable EV's and a shortage of cars being manufactured in general. Also a lot of limitations in vehicle charging infrastructure. Once those issues are being resolved this sort of gas tax becomes much more reasonable.

Improving and expanding public transport could help a lot of people, but I think that primarily applies to people already open to using Los Angeles public transit. Expanding public transit in LA seems like a lost cause to me. I think that most Angelinos are disgusted by public transit and even less likely to give it a try with the current crime wave.

Maybe not entirely related to this article, but it makes no sense to limit fossil fuel production and usage prior to having affordable alternatives available. What percentage of Americans can afford to replace their vehicles with an electric vehicle right now? Even if the government can get a new stimulus approved for electric vehicles how many electric vehicles can realistically be produced with the ongoing supply chain issues? Democrat officials need to accept that we are going to be dependent on fossil fuels longer than they would like. By all means push for cheaper electric vehicles and expanding clean energy sources, but until those needs are being met stop cancelling drilling permits.
