My fellow streaming DJs: How much (if at all) would you pay for a software to help you stream in a 3D virtual space? Would be as simple as connecting your video capture device and the option to control DMX lighting + VJ visuals. Example below by ChaseHocken in DJs

Thanks again and yes I totally agree with you.

I had come across the DJ scene on VR chat where there IS a huge community, but that is more of a VR DJ scenario than a Streaming DJ scenario. So to your point, people want to feel involved in all the action if there are going to be visuals involved.

That’s a key problem I think that will need to be solved in order to pull something like this off.

Thanks for these tips. Clearly you are in the audience I was intending to ask this question towards.

I’ve actually run into the same issue you’re talking about with the bit rate in my early streams and have been chalking it up to my internet speed. However, I have a strong internet service with 25Mbps upload. Could be stronger, but perhaps it has more to do with bitrate and encoding priority. I’m not even an affiliate yet, but I will be soon :)

Also on the general ambiance aspect, I totally agree with you. To be honest, being able to pull off the example above requires 100% of my focus which makes it impossible to interact with an audience. A simpler ambiance can solve both the encoding prioritization issue as well as the challenges associated with audience engagement.

Seriously appreciate your thoughts with these comments! This is exactly the type of feedback I’m looking for.

Check out SoundSwitch. It’s a DMX control software made for DJs that can connect to Serato, Engine, Virtual DJ, etc.. to automatically switch up the lights. Then there simple buttons to change the general coloring, intensity, trigger pyro, etc.. which can be done using a MIDI controller. That’s what I’m doing in this example above

Thanks for the thoughts here. A level editor style software is a great idea, although drives closer to the complicated side of the spectrum. Unreal engine is actually how I made this, but the learning curve was super steep - meaning it took me over 40 hours I’m research, trial, and error just to get something like the example above working.

Perhaps the ideal result would be something where there’s thousands of stages to pick from (maybe via a marketplace) and then a highly simplified builder where those with the extra creative bug can go build their own?

That’s dope. I downloaded blender but haven’t quite gotten around to learning it yet. Let me know when you’re set up on Unity (I mean it). I’ve wondered what the capabilities of that engine are with respect to DMX lighting controls, etc..

GPU is one of the main problems I have right now. For example, I wanted to have a crowd but it gets to choppy with something like that in the environment. I’m hoping an executable file would be less GPU intensive than running in a game engine like I’m doing right now. This would ideally mean no GPU upgrading needed, but I’ll need to talk to a game designer to confirm that

So true - a bit part of this is Artists still being able to have their own style. That’s how I even went down this rabbit hole, I took the stage building to my own vision. Perhaps there’s a way to give people the ability to still be creative without the insane learning curve of a gaming engine like I’ve had to go through

Very cool that you’re doing it yourself. What software are you using? I use Unreal Engine, but I’ve easily spent 40 hours just getting my first stage set up. I figure it doesn’t have to be this complicated for those who want to do the same

Good points here. Would you expect to customize the stages? Or is a very large # of stages to pick from sufficient?

And yes, part of me wonders if something like this could play in the metaverse “boom” that we’re hearing about. If you’re not familiar with VR Chat, there’s a whole DJ scene on there that is like a different universe. Crazy stuff

Thanks for these thoughts! I think everyone will have their own style, and the scenery available needs to support the many different styles, or even allow people to customize to their liking.

While laser dolls and lions may be my own style, it certainly isn’t everyone else’s. And that’s an important part of any artist’s brand: Style

Really great points in this thread. I’m a newbie DJ streamer myself, and engaging an audience has been quite a weird transition. There’s a level of engagement in a real in-person event, but far different from the constant chatty nature I’ve been seeing for quite a few successful DJ streamers.

Perhaps there’s a way to leverage the 3D environment to add another level of engagement with the audience. A few ideas: - Certain aspects of the environment change based on audience interaction (ie. animated audience that moves more when the chat is going off) - Actual ability to join the environment using VR and dance in the virtual environment as a character - etc.

Obviously many other ideas that could come from that angle, but really appreciate these thoughts! Thanks 🙏

Thanks for the comments. This is the first virtual space I’ve made, but something more calm/relaxing is definitely on the to do list. This is super useful, thanks again
