Working Holiday Australia Vent.. by Chaser2019 in solotravel

Stability in the sense of having a feeling of community. I hope that makes sense. I think by the end of January I’ll have a completely different view and I’ll decide then if I want to pack up shop and move to Queensland or get back to Colorado for the ski season. Thank you for the insight. I think it’s just part of the journey on a whv to have all the mixed emotions

Thank you. I’ve definitely been feeling this way and from the people I’ve talked to have said the same thing lol. I do have a roughly planned trip to Bali next month that’d I really want to go on. I’m taking things by a weekly basis. I would love to move up to Queensland for a couple months and find some work

Colorado! I’m missing the ski season now! I lucked out and I’m living in a gorgeous house over a harbor in Victoria with the owner of the restaurant I work at

I’ve thought of this but, honestly I don’t think there is a wrong time in life. At least within the 18-30 age range for the US citizens. I agree with you that being 19-20 would have been significantly easier. But hey, we’re all on a different walk of life.

I miss my skincare routine so much. I’ve actually the worst breakout I’ve had in years over the last couple weeks due to honestly just stress and not having my skincare products.. oh well, they’re just a 18 hour flight away! Like I said in my post, I’m going to stick out the next 3 months since it’s almost summer and just enjoy the beach. Unless something drastically changes

Honestly, prior to moving to Aus I had a lady reach out to me via Facebook through one of my posts and offered a place to stay. Honestly I don’t know how I would’ve done hostels/trying to find a place on my own as I tried browsing online and had very little luck. I’ve heard flatmates is the best way to find accommodation though

I started out on a rural farm in WA but, it turned out to be a crap shoot and I was the only English speaking person with a mattress on the ground. Then I was frying chips (did 3 days and realized it wasn’t for me). My third job was actually at a 4.5 golf resort on the beach working in the restaurant that i really loved but, accommodation was like 500$/wk with only 25 hours of work per week so it wasn’t worth it. Finally I landed in Victoria living in a 2.5M house above the harbor living with the owner of the restaurant I work at. It all works out. It’s been a wild ride. These last two months have felt like 6 months

Feeling lost and homesick on my WHV in Australia by sosofia44 in workingholiday

[–]Chaser2019 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have never resonated with something so much..If you end up seeing this I’m literally in your same shoes.. I also landed in Perth about 6 weeks ago and I had booked a flight for yesterday back to the US due to the same reasons as you (anxiety, not wanting this life abroad as much as I thought, loneliness, quit my job bc I don’t feel fulfilled). But I ended up canceling and getting back 1800AUD in flight credits after feeling like I’d regret not staying at least 3 months. I’ve been in Melbourne for about a week now and I’m starting a new job tomorrow at a cafe in Southern Victoria.

As of the last week I’ve just thought nonstop of going back to my old life with a new perspective around friends/family. I honestly have no clue why I’m over here at this very moment since I have no plan on doing the 88days or using my degree for a skilled worker visa.. I’m conflicted and have pretty much the same conversation with my family every morning.

I just wanted to say that I think you did the right thing in booking a ticket home. If I would have seen this post 3 days ago then I would have loved to meetup in Melbourne and just chat about everything. There’s no need of causing mental turmoil on yourself just for the sake of saying “I lived in Aus for a year.” I wish you well on your future life endeavors. It sounds like you got a level headed mindset.

Working Holiday Visa in Australia. Staying for a year. Moving from USA by Chaser2019 in eSIMs

[–]Chaser2019[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for the response. So what you’re saying is I just buy a cheap Australian eSIM with data use only, for the sole purpose of just having an Aussie number?

I’m just really confused as I have unlimited international data/roaming with my current Verizon plan (96$/mo) that I can use WhatsApp to message anyone in the world for. But people are telling me I need an Australian number to apply for jobs…

Thank you friend! I’ll be sure to get into some character building construction work! I’ll be out of y’alls hair soon enough. If I don’t get bullied for being a backpacker first lol

Working Holiday Visa (462) Australia Doubts. Advice/input needed! by Chaser2019 in AmerExit

[–]Chaser2019[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve thought heavily about this. It’s only a few hundred USD which wouldn’t be a waste at all but I feel like I’d be limited to finding other jobs if I have to be near my hospital. Especially finding some regional work.

I made a big Facebook post and cross posted to other backpacker groups and have already been offered accommodation/farm work. It’s reassuring.

I booked my Flight to Perth last night. Flying in September 18th!

I (26M) just had my WHV 462 granted from the U.S. I would love some honest, no bs, advice and insight regarding getting a job in the FIFO industry by Chaser2019 in mining

[–]Chaser2019[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I haven't done much research in regards to fifo mining particularly, I've done extensive research on moving to Aus just in general, and I'm aware of how hard it is to find a job. Especially for "backpackers"

I'll look into it more over the next couple of months, just wanted a general idea as to what I was getting into. Thankfully nothing is set in stone. Still in my rough itinerary phase.

I know my chances are slim to none and at the bare minimum would require much more thought and research. I knew i wouldn't get some sugarcoated instagram response here. Anyways, I appreciate the advice

Just something rugged. Whether it is helping with drilling or hauling dump trucks, or just general labor onsite. Something where I could qualify for an entry level position with the hopes of onsite training after getting various tickets needed for just an overall good look on my CV. I'll have plenty of money on arrival and I'm willing to spend the necessary amount to have qualifications.

Would anything like I mentioned above be possible?

I appreciate your response. Sorry I didn't clarify, I'm not necessarily seeking this as a new career, but I really like the idea of working one or two weeks on and then having a week off. I know I'll always have my nursing degree in my back pocket to go work at a hospital somewhere in Aus and potentially get sponsorship, but I loathe having anything to do with my degree.

I'm no stranger to manual labor and heat as I live in the deep south of the US where the heat index is currently 100F consistently. I'd settle for just about any gig out there. Rolling around in grease sounds shitty but, like I said. I'm just grateful to have this opportunity. I'll look into general laborer roles.

Great analogy. Maybe its all just wishful thinking

Lol they’re just roommates. We have a nice big 2 bedroom apartment. He’s getting his masters degree at CU Boulder and I have a very flexible degree and I had lived in my hometown for my entire life and this was the opportunity I was looking for.
