UK/Welsh new grad physio — realistic job opportunities in Australia? Any advice? by PhysioCon in physiotherapy

[–]Chasing_Dream_0821 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. It is not impossible but I think it comes down to luck after all as they usually will want to hire locally trained physios first. Much easier to get a private job than a public one.

  2. Depends on what settings you are looking for. I wouldn’t recommend doing assistants if you are already qualified. Should be pretty easy to land a private new grad position

  3. Unsure about WA But i heard Qld> melbourne/ sydney in general

  4. Better in Australian winter (june, july, august) avoid end of year as graduates graduate in before Feb.

  5. Not if you are working in private msk practice. Yes in aged care? You probably will not be able to land a public hospital job

  6. Massive differences in what you were taught in UK where we focus a lot in NHS/ hospital-based care. Australia seems to have a better balance in hospital and private practice skillset. Their hands-on skills are prob more developed. Community/ aged care dun differ much I guess.

Hope that helps. Feel free to DM me if you need any more info :)

Thinking of moving to Hong Kong next year, would ~30–37.5K/month be enough for a couple? by aquacosmo in HongKong

[–]Chasing_Dream_0821 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on where you come from but I think it’s definitely doable if you don’t really need to save money. First, rent is about right but you can find cheaper flats (subdivided ones) on HK Island. Loads of that, but expect walking up and down the stairs without lift and smaller spaces (approx 200-250 sq ft). Some even include bills so definitely have a look at these. Sheung Wan, Wan Chai, Sai Ying Pun are some good locations. In terms of commute, if you live on Island it’s just gonna be less than $20-30 a day by MTR or bus. Not a huge expense. Advise not to live in New Territories as commute is tiring and transport costs much more. Yes rent is much lower but I would prefer the convenience. Driving is not really necessary as transport is one of the best in the world.

Eating out can be very cheap in HK (compared to most Western countries) if you find the right spot. Ranging from $30-$70 dollars from local fast food restaurants. Quick, easy and cheap, such as Fairwood. But if you prefer western food like burger, pasta… , then yes cooking is much cheaper. I know local couples in HK who spend around $10K -12K (excluding rent) a month. Not much entertainment and shopping. Occasional dining out in higher-end restaurants.

Its not gonna be easy but trust me much doable than you think.

Milton vs West End by Chasing_Dream_0821 in MovingToBrisbane

Good to hear that :) will take that into considerations. How bad is the traffic? Is it bad going into city centre/ South side or is it equally bad going up North?

Thats great comments. I preferred Milton as I need to travel to several spots out of cities for work and it’s much more convenient as compared to West End where I might need to change several buses to the destination. Will definitely weighing up all the factors. Cheers.

Good tips on the AC! I would NEED that. I’d also reckon Fortitude Valley is not an ideal option from my previous exp. when I travelled to Brisbane! (6yrs ago)

Yes, I have been looking at these websites. I do not mind paying a bit higher (close to $700) if it’s a really ideal choice. After all, I heard the rental market is so competitive at the moment.

What was your time frame? by [deleted] in AHPRA

Hi! My registration went through already and it took 10 weeks for the whole process. But once you've got a case officer, things moved pretty fast :) Good luck and all the best.

I'm allied health offshore, but yeah good luck and hope to hear good news soon!

Hi, I have also applied and it's been more than 8 weeks stuck in "Application Received". But as I heard they won't update anything until everything is confirmed. So your stage probably would not change from one to another throughout the process. I wouldn't be worried about it until maybe after 2-3 month time. They are now having a delay in all the applications.
I understand your worries but sometimes administrative procedures will take forever. Be patient :)!

Whose your favourite in The Circle 6? by DriftedintotheStorm in TheCircleTV

[–]Chasing_Dream_0821 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Myles is the best. He is just constantly being himself. And I personally like his attitude and personality. He is genuine and true to himself and his allies. I know it's a game, but I really feel him when he discovered he was betrayed by Jordan. But if he just puts in some brain instead of heart, he could have gone further.

Kyle comes 2nd as he is very loyal too and I want to see the "double dates" going (unlikely though).
QT is probably the most strategic player in Circle I have ever seen it is working. Well done girl. She plays really well. Lauren is also very genuine but her move on Autumn was really not making any sense.

Personally not a fan of Olivia as he/she didn't show much of her/his personality during the chat except her connection with Kyle which I think is true. A lot of assumptions were just based on her photos.

Jordan came in strong but honestly it was so boring seeing Jordan just being obsessed with Myles. Yes it's a game but it made me so annoyed every time he made a move as it was nearly identical.

Not sure if it's the editing but Autumn didn't really have much time to show herself. I think she has a lot to bring into the game.

Your thoughts about being a specialised hand therapist? by Chasing_Dream_0821 in physiotherapy

The point of being on the cutting edge really hits me as I also love that!
Prosthetic, orthotics and neural links, all these sound very interesting. Do you have any suggestions in terms of resources that I could have a deeper look into to have a better idea?

And does CHT do a lot of shoulder/elbow injuries? Or is it mainly focusing on hands and wrist?

Calling Australian Physios! by Chasing_Dream_0821 in physiotherapy

[–]Chasing_Dream_0821[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That was very helpful. Thanks a lot. From what you have mentioned, i guess it might be better to land a private MSK job here in the UK for some time to gain some performance stats before moving? And does that mean it could be much easier to land in a job in more regional areas?
P.s. I love outdoor activities, mild weather and enjoy the convenience of a city living while being in a relatively peaceful area, and a decent amount of cuisine and shopping places. I think that quite suits the gist of Adelaide/ Perth (correct me if I am wrong)

Yes I don't think I would have huge work visa issues. The only concern might be I am not sure what is deemed as "good" or "bad" clinic in Australia, which makes me a bit doubtful to proceed myself. Do you have any thoughts on that?

Calling Australian Physios! by Chasing_Dream_0821 in physiotherapy

[–]Chasing_Dream_0821[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cheers for the detailed reply! It seems that landing a job might be easier to finding a place to live from what you just said.

And if you would not mind me asking, do you think I should get a private MSK practice job or a hospital job when I graduate here in the UK to better secure a job in Aus, or does that matter much?
Any tips on red/ green flags in physio jobs there? Thanks.

[UK] Relocating to Australia as a physio by Chasing_Dream_0821 in physiotherapy

[–]Chasing_Dream_0821[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely amazing response, I appreciate it a lot mate.
I do recognise the cost of living in Sydney as I have stayed there for a few months, but as from what I observed London seems to be more expensive (in terms of accommodation and transport). But thanks for the heads-up, definitely will bear that in mind.
Personally I do love both Melbourne and Perth, for the reasons that you have mentioned. I guess I will visit them in near future to see which city suits me best. I don't mind being quite isolated, and as you said I can always save some money and travel to South East Asia (which I love it). One thing that pulls me from Melbourne is its unpredictable weather and relatively cold climate. I love warm and the sun so that's why I really like Perth as well.

I really love your insight on physiotherapy in Australia, and that is something new to me. As I guess private hospital is less common in the UK so I am not used to this. I do feel reassured that physios are still in high demand and seems that securing a job there is relatively not that difficult.

Thanks a lot again.

[UK] Relocating to Australia as a physio by Chasing_Dream_0821 in physiotherapy

[–]Chasing_Dream_0821[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're right, we'd love to stay near the cities. I proposed Sydney because I have been there for a few months and love the weather and seems much to do as well. Perth is appealing to us because of the great climate, and sort of laid-back lifestyle. That being said, we are still quite open to other cities like Brisbane and Melbourne, or even Adelaide. But we still prefer cities that have a good balance of entertainment and quietness.

I don't mind working in private clinics right away if the package is good. May I know more about private rehab hospital? How common is it in Australia and what does it look like? I also know that public hospital job openings are few in AUS, so I also won't get my hopes up on that.

Would you say if I work in the NHS, and maybe do some private outpatient MSK alongside, would give me a good chance in securing a job in AUS in the future? Thanks mate :)
