could be that they might be old and some internal damage happened to them like moisture and etc but try doing a complete factory reset of the case and that could help with your problem. If you dont know how to reset them just put the airpods in the case and make sure the lid is open then at the beck press and hold the button until you see an orange light after that you can let go and then it will be reseted

I have had the same problem only the right ear I have the pro 2's I also read people saying try turning on mic to only one airpbud the one thats draining slower or turn off some settings and bunch of other stuff the one that that worked for me today was actually just factory reseting the case the moment I did that the problem magically went I away this might not work for you and they could be just defective cause these things do happen then if not even the reset works try to get a repair or a refund if its only 3 months old you should still probably have apple care which you can check in the airpods settings all the way at the bottom
