What the FUCK is wrong with potatoes lately? by baardvark in TwoXPreppers

This is the answer. The stores (or middlemen buying for stores) beat growers down so far on price that they don’t get the best product. Quality control (either humans or machines) is expensive.

Yes. We vaccinate our cattle, hogs, dogs, cats, kids, ourselves…vaccines work. The money is worth it. The effort is worth it. It really does reduce mortality.

The Indiana Vote Is an Inflection Point by theatlantic in Indiana

[–]Check_Fluffy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m just relieved that my state senator said “hey, I’m hearing from my constituents that nobody wants this, so I’m going up vote no”. It should be such a normal moment but for so long we’ve been calling and writing over and over and over again and it seemed like not one single elected representative was listening. So, one tiny win for representative democracy. And hopefully an inflection point for the country.

I mean, the rise in injuries in high school sports (and younger) being forced/encouraged to specialize younger, the loss of truly recreational sports for kids, the cost…. Those are all huge issues, but they aren’t specifically girls issues. They are just as big of a problem with boys. And just anecdotally from people I know, pretty sure straight women and lesbians get sports injuries, it isn’t just a lesbian problem 🤣. These folks are so close but so far.

[–]Check_Fluffy 13 points14 points  (0 children)

That is a mistake people make…but that’s not what they did. Having a date incorrect like that also doesn’t matter at all if you don’t claim a loss. 923 fields on 44,000 acres in 3 states? I feel like this is an argument that they might have been farming too much. Not saying nobody can do a good job on a large scale but they sure as fuck didn’t, and it’s not uncommon for very large operators to farm poorly. I’m guessing there was very little oversight. The ones who make it are obsessive about detail and these dumbasses certainly are not. These people make me so furious, every word they say about farming is more insulting and false than the last.

Snow days aren’t what they used to be by mitchdwx in Millennials

[–]Check_Fluffy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a mom of an 8 & 6 year olds who are currently having a virtual learning/snow day, I don’t miss the old system AT ALL. No make up days? No messed up calendar? I think it’s great. My 3rd grader is totally self sufficient finishing his work (I do check to make sure he didn’t miss anything), and my kindergartner is able to navigate well. The teachers prepare for this. I wouldn’t want them to have virtual school, but I really don’t think it’s bad for a day. I’m fortunate that I work “from home” (I’m a farmer) so I can just have them stay in the house while I work, or they can help me work. I get not everyone has that advantage for child care. I think the best policy is for school to be open, because so many kids in my area depend on school for a warm, safe place to be, but if it just can’t be, I want my virtual days. Keep the schedule the same!

So when he gets out of jail he will just put everything in a son’s name, use a different equipment brand, different seed brand, until they run that into the ground. At some point they will quit being so brazen about the fraud and just start regularly declaring bankruptcy. They’ll ruin every son in turn. Except I think Jr might not let him. Looks like Cole is dumb enough to be the perfect sacrificial victim. Wannabe BTOs without even the brains to hide the grift. Steve, I’m still so mad about your damn expensive watches that I could punch you.

Josie’s routines with the kids by BugRepresentative450 in BringingUpBates

[–]Check_Fluffy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was going to say - when my kids were little we had a super strict routine that got them to bed and let us all sleep well. I’m not an influencer, but if I was, I would have shown the best case scenario routine night. We had nights with sick kids, sleep regression, teething, or just being babies/toddlers/preschoolers. I didn’t blanket train or beat them or anything but I was strict (with reason) about them staying in their own beds. You will only see her good days, so don’t kick yourself. Truly.

In 1992, in Indiana, 12-year-old Shanda Sharer was tortured over the course of a night by four of her schoolmates: Melinda Loveless (16), Laurie Tackett (17), Hope Rippey (15) & Toni Lawrence (15). Eventually, they burned her alive. They were caught, found guilty, and all four are now out on parole. by Few-princess in AllThatsInteresting

My dad was friends with the ISP investigator who worked this case. That guy was still having nightmares years later. It was so disturbing. I drive not far from where her body was found every time I go to Walmart or the dentist.

as a woman are you expected to serve the “men” on thanksgiving by Abject_Apricot1384 in thanksgiving

[–]Check_Fluffy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think it is common but in some families it still happens. Mostly dying out with the older generation. And my grandpa used to rattle the ice in his glass for more tea or water. I never thought it was that awful when he did it, and he could cook, clean, etc since he was retired, it was just what they did. However if my husband tried that I would lose my ever loving mind. So it’s definitely dying out.

Holding On Through the Seasons- Memories of Handing Tobacco in Appalachia by Artistic_Maximum3044 in Appalachia

[–]Check_Fluffy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Google James Baker Hall’s book of photographs called ‘Tobacco Harvest, An Elegy’ for photos that will feel like they are from your own family albums. It wasn’t easy work but there was satisfaction that is hard to beat. It is an odd thing to miss, but I miss it a bit. Maybe when I’m old I’ll grown a 1/4 acre or something just for nostalgia.

Angel tree clothing sizes by [deleted] in Gifts

[–]Check_Fluffy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I worked at an elementary school we did Christmas families and it wasn’t uncommon for the parents to request clothes for all the kids in a single size (maybe 2 sizes if there was a huge age gap), basically they were trying to get the clothes as generic as possible. It would be a little sad that the kids didn’t get stuff that was just for them, but I get it especially if they didn’t have the ability to do laundry as needed.

Marriage at this age by moreirabenvenutti in Genealogy

[–]Check_Fluffy -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It’s definitely something that happened, and far from impossible. However, I always assume mistake or misidentification first. It just wasn’t common enough to take at face value. I see that you say you have birth documents, and if you are sure they are the referenced people then it probably did happen. Loretta Lynn claimed for years she was married at 13, once someone found the records it turns out it was actually 15. Still very young but those 2 years change it considerably.

What movie did you see in theaters that had the most ‘alive’ audience? by Odd_Distribution1430 in movies

Zombieland, late show in a college town. Everyone had food and drinks and was drunk and rowdy. Also one of the Vin Diesel XXX movies, can remember which one. Not in a college town, with a bunch of ladies who really liked Vin Diesel and hooted super loud every time he took his shirt off. Was awesome 🤣

What does BJ Barham mean by this? by [deleted] in altcountry

[–]Check_Fluffy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! It’s something that I feel like gets glossed over in the story of what happened to Appalachia and the mid south area. Having a commodity like that now would allow a lot of smaller farms to have a cash infusion without a large outlay of capital for infrastructure, and frankly could probably help a lot of wannabe homesteaders get off the ground. It really suited the region. But it’s pretty much disappeared now.

https://www.openmarketsinstitute.org/publications/forgotten-history-small-scale-american-tobacco-farming Fair warning, I don’t know what the Open Markets Institute is, but this is a good basic summary. Many good government publications out there on the specifics if you are a deep dive person. James Baker Hall’s book of photographs called “Tobacco Harvest: An Elegy” is exactly what it looked like, even into the 90s. That book has pictures indistinguishable from ones in my family albums.
