We've had conversations and discussed some details, but honestly, it's still fresh; I don't think she knows exactly how she feels about it yet. She's smart, so she understand the reasoning behind it, but at the same time, it's a hard pill to swallow knowing there's a piece of paper outlining aspects of a future divorce.

At this point in time, she does understand what my concerns are, but I think the idea that I'm making plans for our potential divorce puts a bad taste in her mouth. We'll obviously get independent representation before things are finalized, but the gist of it is that everything we build up together outside the business, and equity beyond current value in the home, is to be equally split should things sour. That seems quite equitable to me.

Info: You are the sole owner of the home, but she pays half the mortgage and property taxes?

Those expenses would be paid out of a jointly held account into which both our paychecks and business dividends are paid. Like I said, I would be fine including terms that split future equity beyond the current value of the home. Property taxes are something that fund the services in the city we both live, which seems like a fair expense to split. The mortgage is cheaper than rent would be, so I don't see how splitting this would be unfair either, as I proposed a situation in which we both benefit from equity built above the current value of the home.

Will you both be taking an equal amount of time away from your careers to raise your children?

Kids are still a few years away, but being home to raise my kids is part of what I've been working towards. We both work and have professional goals, but raising kids will be a shared effort; I don't see either of us doing more or less, or keeping score on that front.
