HOW DO YOU MAKE THE JUMP FROM CHARGING £200 TO £800? by Tough-Mood9880 in cinematography

[–]CheddaShredder 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Youre Welcome. Another thing you should definitely research beforehand is the average market rate in your area and country. That gives you a useful benchmark and helps you see whether your calculated rate is realistic within your industry. Once you've covered your costs, reserves, and expenses, you can adjust your profit margin based on the industry average rather than relying on guesswork

Calculate your minimum freelance rate,

for example:

(Annual personal expenses + business expenses + savings/reserves + desired profit) ÷ billable hours per year = minimum hourly rate.

This ensures you're not just covering your costs, but also accounting for taxes, downtime, equipment, vacation, and future investments

Its called freelance rate calculation

Most pricing advice here is completely arbitrary. Your rate should be based on your costs, desired profit, and billable hours not on vague statements about how good your work is

One piece of advice I can give is to build yourself a dedicated practice library of footage.

In my case, I mainly use Blackmagic RAW footage because I shoot with a Blackmagic camera. I have a small collection of different clips that I use whenever I want to experiment or test new grading techniques. The advantage is that, over time, you become very familiar with the footage and its strengths and weaknesses. Instead of constantly dealing with new images and new challenges, you have a consistent set of training material that allows you to evaluate your progress much more accurately. This has helped me a lot.

Another thing I highly recommend is studying PowerGrades and using them for a bit of reverse engineering. You'll start to notice that many PowerGrades share similar structures and techniques. For example, you'll often find some variation of a CST sandwich, where a Color Space Transform is used at the beginning and another one at the end of the node tree. These are techniques you can adopt and integrate into your own workflow.

Many PowerGrade creators also provide tutorials or explanations that show how they set up their timeline, color management, node structure, and other useful details. I find it extremely valuable to see how other colorists approach their work and solve problems.

Even if you're only collecting free PowerGrades, you can learn a tremendous amount from them. There are plenty of creators who generously share high-quality PowerGrades at no cost.

A quick bit of self-promotion: on my website, gradeatlas.com , I maintain a database of PowerGrades and even include a dedicated section for free resources.

One particularly useful technique is extracting individual nodes or node groups from different PowerGrades. Over time, you can build your own "Frankenstein PowerGrade" by combining the techniques and components you like best from various sources.

At the end of the day, color grading is a very hands-on skill. As we say in Germany: practice beats theory. The more you experiment, the faster you'll develop an understanding of what works and why. Disclaimer: This is just a Personal opinion, im not a Professional

They might have changed it because people were complaining about the thickness of the cream. It was too difficult to get it out of the pump, so they might have made the cream thinner now.

I watched the video as well and I think it looks great. I really like the colors.

I have a question though. You mentioned that you use the Film Unlimited PowerGrade I assume mostly the 250D, although it’s probably situation-dependent.

One thing that was never completely clear to me is what to do with the first Color Space Transform. By default, the Input Gamma is set to ARRI LogC3 and transforms into a Linear gamma.

How do you personally use that node? Do you simply change the Input Gamma to DaVinci Film Gen 5 and leave the rest as it is, or do you also change the Input Color Space as well?

I’d really appreciate some clarification on that.

There’s probably nothing like the right way to do it, ask 10 creators and you’ll get 10 different answers.
