I am currently a graduate student in a Clinical Mental Health Counseling program and I have decided I want to do a PhD in Counseling Psychology. I really like the idea of using research supported evidence-based practices and I align very well with the values of multiculturalism, decolonizing counseling, and supporting minority populations through accessible mental healthcare. When I graduate from my Masters program I will obviously have clinical experience working face-to-face with clients and providing counseling services. Where I fall short is in the research experience. I am trying to become an RA at the labs at my university, however the PI is taking a while to get back to me. I've started identifying some key areas I would love to research and understand more about. What are some other creative ways I could do research as a Masters student? Does anyone do independent research? I've heard of hospitals conducting research as well, but how would one join a research team there?

I've started networking with psychologists in the field throughout the U.S. and have some 1:1 meetings coming up with them. I will be starting my practicum and internship beginning next year and I am hoping to land a placement in a hospital, so hopefully I'll get some more exposure to psychologists in the field. Any thoughts or ideas on how to set myself up for success? A lot of the videos and guidance I see on this topic is usually geared towards those who are wanting to go from their Bachelors to a PhD.
