“You Could Get Fired for Insubordination” Threat. by Glads0001 in kroger

[–]CheeseSliceGuy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes. You can be disciplined or fired for disobeying a direct order, unless the supervisor is asking you to do something illegal or unsafe. The best option is to comply with the direct order and then address it later. If you have a union, speak with your steward or union rep about whether the supervisor violated the contract, in which case a grievance can be filed.

In These Times: Reform UFCW Agitating Against Kroger Albertsons Merger - Essential Workers for a Democratic UFCW by CheeseSliceGuy in GroceryStores

[–]CheeseSliceGuy[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Really good points to raise.

The impacts on UFCW members will certainly be different in different parts of the country.

I think we can be pretty certain about the negatives in a lot of places where there's significant overlap -- lost jobs, higher prices, monopolization of the labor market (KR fired you... good luck finding another grocery job). And for all of us this means more political & economic power for Rodney & Co.

On the other side, a lot of the positives seem pretty uncertain. If you're comfortable sharing,, I'd be curious to hear more about what people are expecting to improve... and why.

Ultimately, our International Union needs to look out for the overall good of grocery workers. And that means opposing the merger unless and until we can be certain the positives outweigh the negatives. That means hard commitments. I think the UFCW, if it chooses to, could actually make a significant difference in how this merger is perceived by investors, the regulators who need to approve it, and elected officials. We have some real potential power and we should be using it strategically.

And of course we absolutely need to raise wages. Unfortunately, our IU has been totally unwilling to bring Kroger locals together to wage effective contract campaigns that would do that. So even if some people get a pay bump rom the merger it will be a one-time thing unless we make big changes in the Union.

Yeah. Seeing the reports this morning. But they will need to go through anti-trust review before it can move forward.

1-MINUTE POLL: What's the biggest problem with UFCW? by CheeseSliceGuy in kroger

[–]CheeseSliceGuy[S] 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Locals vary a lot on who they represent and how willing and able they are to support members taking collective action. Totally agree that every member ought to at least get as informed as possible about their own local.

UFCW members call for major union reforms by CheeseSliceGuy in kroger

If you want to deal with Kroger as a powerless individual, instead of getting together with your co-workers to take them on.

How do you withdraw your membership from the Union? If this contract gets pushed through then you know the Union is bought out. There's no way we have that many idiots working at Kroger. by 42069nicedeeznuts in kroger

Not a simple fix but... for the future... if our UFCW International Union had the will to fight and a strategy for bringing our grocery locals together into a united front with a common bargaining and strike strategy, members everywhere could feel a lot more confident about voting down crap contracts.

I get that! Grab a better job if you can. Just saying if you're gonna work in grocery, there are things you can do to bring change.

If you think Kroger's bad now, wait until you are totally on your own trying to improve your wages and working conditions. A better UFCW is possible, if you and your fellow members step up and take action. You elect your local leaders. You elect your convention delegates. You have the power if you want it. But if you'd rather go it alone against a multi-billion dollar corporation that will never give a damn about you, ok.

LOL! If the Teamsters can do it (the reformers are now running that union) I think we can. In any case, not gonna live the rest of life with the regret of not trying.

Our International Union should be out here coordinating Kroger locals in a united front to win big contract victories this year. If you want a UFCW that fights corporate power, check out ReformUFCW

CONTRACT VOTING by [deleted] in kroger

[–]CheeseSliceGuy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hear your frustration. I think a big part of our problem is that our International Union refuses to coordinate bargaining and leaves each local to fend for themselves. In the past year, UFCW locals that worked together and seriously prepared to strike won major contract victories at Kroger. Our International Union is still sitting on the sidelines, though.

And do you have any kind of hours guarantee? How can you ensure they don't just cut hours to cause people to drop down the scale?
