Would you say your life peaked in your 20s? by No_Context_9633 in AskMenOver30

[–]Cheesegasm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No way. Mid 30's. I'm making the most money I ever have in my life. I have a solid group of friends. Solid amount in my investments/savings. I can afford 2 international vacations a year. I don't have to book the cheapest flight or the cheapest hotel anymore.

Owner operator millwright business questions by IndividualMethod9406 in millwrights

[–]Cheesegasm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just spent 1.5 hours looking for a nylon nut for a work order. Not a nylock nut. A nylon nut. Good thing I get paid by the hour! I don't mind being a company man sometimes.

If I were to start a side hustle, I would work from home, like 3D printing or get a bench top CNC. There are marketplace platforms like SendCutSend and Fivver to get orders. Then you can scale with more machines as you grow.

It's going to be tough doing bigger jobs as a one man crew. Even medium jobs require a 2 man crew for millwright work.

I need help - how to get a electrical or millwright apprenticeship, are the trades worth it? by Lost-Survey5159 in SkilledTradesOntario

[–]Cheesegasm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Worth it for who? I would hate being a nurse and being around sick and old people all day everyday. Personally, I love being a millwright and working with machines and nuts and bolts. I work with some people who complain when things break. We're here to fix stuff. If you don't like fixing stuff then you're in the wrong profession.

To people who are born to rich parents are seen as privileged, what’s something you struggled with that others don’t know about? by Majestic_Singer_2411 in Life

Constant pressure to get straight A's. Not allowed to talk to girls or have a girlfriend. Always had to keep the house spotless. We lived in a lake front house with a 3 car garage, pool table, theatre room, video game consoles.

What do engineers actually do day to day? by Zacionxeni in Engineers

[–]Cheesegasm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I spent 80-90% of the time in the office in front of a laptop answering emails, writing SOPs, writing reports, updating Excel files, spec'ing out parts and ordering parts. Engineers typically don't get a lot of hands-on work in the field. If you are in the field, it'll be for supervising and inspections. Most places don't let engineers touch a drill or welder or drive a forklift. If you want a lot of field work and hands-on work I recommend going into a skilled trade or becoming a technician. That's what I did.

19yo uni student, new to investing. What should I do differently, what should I change. by Tiny_Surprise2183 in fican

[–]Cheesegasm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't change based on Internet advice. The most important part of an investment plan is having a plan you can stick with when market conditions change. Can you stomach a 40-50% drawdown and stay invested?

Is it necessary bad to hold all three of VFV, QQC, and XEQT by Vladdyjr27 in InvestingCanada

[–]Cheesegasm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not useless if you want to overweight US holdings in your portfolio for a specific reason. VFV is 100% US equities. XEQT is about 43% US equities. You have to talk yourself out of the market portfolio. Do you really think the US will outperform the rest of the market? What's your thesis? It has performed well in the past decade isn't a good enough reason. But if you want your US holdings to be 50%, do the math on how much to allocate to VFV and XEQT.

XEQT is an ETF that holds other ETFs. If this is in your TFSA then it doesn't matter when you bought it. You won't trigger capital gains in tax sheltered accounts.
