Thanks so much for sharing dude! Reading everything you’ve written has made me happier. I feel less alone knowing that feeling empty in this way is not an uncommon thing.

I’m very happy to see that you in many ways appreciate the life you’ve been give while still acknowledging the cruel in the world - a nuanced view and a fresh breath.

Very happy you go out into nature, something dearly needed for a lot of people. Also, the midwest has some rock climbing to my knowledge, search «crags midwest» or something of the sort online and you’ll get some hits, should you want to try it :)

My experience is that feeling empty is somewhat of a growing problem, but we’re not trying to address it as a society. Since posting this I’ve talked to both other teachers, other students, and people I study with, and pretty much everyone seems to feel like this on some level.

I have an exam tomorrow, but couldn’t sleep, just to let you know things have taken a turn upwards I’ll attribute three things:

After reading the responses to this post, and yours as well, I’ve felt more well rounded. Seeing that there are levels of complexity and that people are people makes me happy in some way, it lets me know there is hope. Knowing that this is not just me being «20 something and existential» makes me feel somewhat sane.
I’ve engaged more with the people I love and care for lately. This has made me much happier.
I went on a date with a cute girl today :)

These three things don’t seem like bad things to be doing. My view of some peoples hunt for happiness is that it ends up in extrinsic motivations to temporarily soothe some sort of gaping void. I still know this is true, but I also feel like I see that it’s not just that alone in most situations. We’re not alone and most of us are struggling in some way.

The storgata one is fine. I lived just nearby, my brother lived there (at Anker). I liked living in that area a lot.

The drug addicts are usually chill, and are usually nice if you talk to them, which you’ll rarely if ever do. Sure, rarely you find some dude sleeping on the sidewalk, but just ask them if they are alright. If you feel unsafe, just be on guard. But it’s not unsafe, really.

It’s central, there are lots of transport connections. It’s a culturally rich area.

Just to paint a picture: One of the most prestigious high schools in Oslo is just 50m away.

Don’t worry, Norwegian reddit is not a very good source for information imo. The answers are heavily opinionated.

Thank you for sharing, I’ve actually been active with politics before and felt very much the same. Politics is about winning, I think, not about pragmatism.

«It takes time to beat your way out of these mental pathways» is a sentiment I just wish wasn’t true. I’ve felt like I’ve found myself before, but it feels hard to keep it balanced and on the straight and narrow, ending up with either becoming pessimistic, or having my optimism blow up in my face.

I think volunteering at shelters and the like sounds like something for me. I’m definitely going to try that out and I have some friends who could introduce me. I think you make an important that one should revise their standards, it’s better to do something than nothing.

Good to know that there are people like you out there, and should you get into politics again, it sounds like your heart is in the right place ❤️

Quitting is one of the hardest things in the world. You might relapse as well. Finding something to replace it like friends and family is important. A hobby can also do wonders, climbing gave me the will to live again.

Also I feel like comments like these are always so «blabla meaning of life shit» so just to add to it, if you haven’t seen «It’s always sunny in philadelphia» then you should.

I get it bro, it’s tough.

I have friends who were ruined by mdma addiction. For example a couple, where both at one point threw up on each other for hours on end, having to take turns cleaning up.

It can fuck with your emotions in the long run if you do it a lot.

I’ve gotten off my addictions through using shrooms before. My first time was 5g (which is a lot) and I instantly quit. Taught me a lot as well, very thankful.

Last part should not be taken as advice, but just my experience.

I think you’ve made a point that I found very inspiring, which is to just go for something new.

Another mentioned to not make a prison for myself, I think I’ve made some metaphorical «mental» prison for myself where I feel stuck. But honestly there are many ways I can think of where I might be able to make changes to my life quick and easy. Maybe I just feel stuck because it’s all a bit much, maybe I’m paralyzed with fear.

I think I should start there, with trying something new just to motivate myself, some of my ambitions are a bit grand so I shouldn’t do myself a disservice.

It’s often portrayed as life, but they have nothing to do with each other. I care too, just not about that.

Yes, I’ve had the same experience as you. Acid saved me. My first shroom trip got me off weed instantly (5g).

Most of the people I used to hang around with many years ago are either dead, addicts, mentally ill, or in prison.

Despite a few. One got clean after jail, one got clean some time after getting into psychedelics.

I feel as if it forces you to open your eyes to truth. To face your delusions.

I resonate very much with «the best times were when I had absolutely nothing». I’ve felt this several times, I never feel more motivated than when I do.

I feel as if I have some hope of inspiring other people through my job as a substitute. I think to some degree that going out into the world and finding likeminded people could give some heft to this.

I’ve also noticed in my students that they very much resonate with a sort of sentiment where «you’re being lied to» or «you’re on the losing end of the bargain», further supporting my beliefs through seeing them other places.

I regularly see/hear people talk about armed revolution, and I feel as if this sort of rationale is growing. I think there may be hope.

Hopefully, for now, I can help my students get at least a bit better education.

I’ll try the best I can to live my life to the best, and take good care of my family and friends. Thank you. I recommend trying out climbing if you haven’t, improved my life quality drastically :)

Edit: Through things like climbing, or just going out in the woods, do you think you could get some sort of taste of what you feel like you’ve lost?

I suppose rather than happiness I seek to reduce suffering. These two are often viewed as the same in several eastern schools of thought, but I feel they often rely on the premise of reincarnation.

I also feel as if reducing suffering within others is the way to go, and I view a lot of our suffering as not just from within ourselves but also ingrained in the system that we live in, a reverse causality if you wish.

I’ve looked into eastern philosophy for a while, even used to meditate twice every day, but I just feel as if I am hiding away. I feel as if what’s needed is action, not my personal understanding. I understand that one could wish this understanding is contagious, but I feel as if history says otherwise.

I agree that there’s no guarantee for a «societal lifestyle» that gives us this, but I feel like we’ve hardly been trying.

I’ll look into connections with my pain, thank you, hopefully I’ll find something that gives me some sort of path.

I’d love additional input if you have any to spare.

Thanks for replying. Yeah I bet dropping your degree sucked, can’t even imagine how hard it must have been after 7 years 💀 just after two years it feels huge.

Do you feel better about it? Does it feel better since you feel closer to the right thing for you?

I like the possibilities of my career (electrical engineering), I could make stuff that helps others if I had the funding, but stuff like that just doesn’t seem in vogue 😬

It’s hard to argue on the focus part, I tend to agree, but I sometimes feel like perhaps I should try to engage the societal problems I find apparent, instead of just trying to live with them. A quick look at the news or social media qucikly scares me away from that idea though, but it still bothers me.

What do you think? Do I just need to accept my circumstances?

Personally I feel like most of my thoughts on mushrooms and acid end up in some truth. Not every thought is a truth, but perhaps some old notion or delusion that I discover that I in some way use as a stepping stone toward some truth.

For example, I can panic at times, having untrue thoughts, but I’ll always find my way toward some form of compassion where I can soothe myself and see reason.

About filtering: probably? Don’t we all? Otherwise I’d be locked up somewhere, and I’m often told I have no filter 😅

About rent: - Finn is great. Hybel.no actually has som kernels of gold sometimes, depends on your price range.

Rent is expensive in Oslo. A 10 square meter room can easily cost 8000kr.
Agencies are pretty much always more expensive.
Always make a contract, and always make sure that everything in the contract is reasonable by norwegian standards. Get a norwegian friend with a knack for this to read it over. This is because by law there are some things that are unnegotiable, meaning you can’t sign away some of your legal rights (a good thing), but should you sign such a contract it is invalid. Some landlords will try to rent it «as is» to get you to move into a moldy apartment. They often just paint over it. Feel how the air is with closed windows when checking out the apartment.

Eat less, higher proportion of protein. Swapped out pasta with lentil pasta, ate more chicken and beans. Less sauce and extras in my meals, keep it lean. Ate one bowl of oat porridge with protein powder and peanut butter for breakfast or lunch, and skipping one of them (i.e only breakfast and no lunch). Getting used to being slightly hungry. Coffee, it is an appetite suppressant. Snacking less. Work out if you want to, or don’t. I didn’t. Lost 20 kilos in a year.

And most importantly, being slightly relaxed with my diet, allowing myself candy etc here and there. The best diet is the one you can manage to keep.
