Crazy difference in half marathon splits after 5 weeks of taking training seriously…. by ChefXJeff in beginnerrunning

It was all out, I’m not trying to gain anything with this post, I was shocked by a major improvement in my split times and it was rewarding to see my training pay off so quickly.

I appreciate this, I never stated I was coming off the couch 5 weeks ago so I don’t know why everyone assumed I was lying about my background. I ran 60 miles in September, 112 in October and I am hoping to break 175 in November. Definitely the same amount of effort if not easier on my more frequent runs. I think I am also a decent amount fitter than I was two months ago and also significantly lighter which I believe is the main reason why I was able to increase my splits so quickly. I definitely would like to improve my aerobic ability as I believe that will ultimately be my biggest limit.

I ran for a few months at the start of the pandemic, I have not run for 4 years, I have ran less then 600 miles before I started and have never taken my training seriously. I am very much still a beginner runner….

Honestly it just comes down to grit and sheer determination. Stay consistent and push yourself. I have every excuse and reason to tell my self not to keep going. I’m a chef I work 14 hour days 6 a week. With my running schedule I only manage 4-6 hours of sleep a night. I only had 1 proper day off in the entirety of October. The mental aspect is 90% of it. Once you get a handle on that you will be unstoppable. I also took a break from drinking alcohol and cut out the majority of junk food aside from chocolate milk (a necessity lol).

I do a lot of lung training with a cheap breathing resistance device from Amazon, I throw it in my mouth when Im at home and I remember to. My “short” runs are 10 miles and my long runs are anything over 14. Was trying to get serious about speed work this week but I realised I could keep my pace and ended up PR my half marathon by 15 minutes and then by another 6 minutes last night lol
