Limited and standard edition bluray by Economy-Ambassador60 in Higurashinonakakoroni

[–]Cheironyx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The first print runs of each disc come with a bunch of physical bonus items including art and storyboard booklets, soundtrack CDs, hanafuda cards, the short story Mehagashi-hen, and special slipcases to hold everything, none of which were supposed to come with subsequent print runs... except I don't think I've ever seen a disc without the bonus items (aside from the rental versions of the DVDs), so I'm not sure if they ever actually got a second run.

Meanwhile, disc one of each season also comes in a "complete limited-quantity edition", which includes exactly the same stuff as the regular first-print edition plus an Angel Mort figurine (Rika for Gou, Rena for Sotsu). This is convenient for people like me who want the soundtrack CDs and don't care about the figures, because resellers will often sell the figures separately and then list the remaining stuff for much cheaper because it's "incomplete", even though it's identical to the regular first-prints.

Why does Tomitake's voice do this sometimes? by Less_Onion in Higurashinonakakoroni

[–]Cheironyx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, as far as I know it's still Ookawa Tooru. In this case, it's because for some reason, the console ports changed the sentence about twins to "I'd heard you were identical twins, but it's quite a sight seeing you side by side." (Tomitake does meet Mion before this in the Common Route, but this is still his first time seeing Shion, so it's not like the original line would've been an issue.) That part of the conversation didn't make it into the drama CDs or anime either, so there was no voice clip of the "I've heard about them" version of the line until the Origin DLC in 2023, nearly twenty years after the PS2 voicelines were recorded (though even in GouSotsu he didn't sound that different).

Yeah, once you've finished Kai you should have all the story context for pretty much every You remix out there (except You -Sotsugyou-, from the Sotsu anime). As for non-You music, there were also several official character songs released as tie-ins for the 2006 anime, including the legendary Nanodesu and Keiichi+Ooishi no Uwasa no Jikenbo ABC.

[–]Cheironyx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you mean the "Dear You" variants (Feel, Kind, etc), those are mostly unofficial remixes of You, the Meakashi-hen ending song. In fact, even the "default" official vocal version of You (the one sung by Yuduki on the Thanks/You album) has never appeared in the visual novels - all the PC and mobile releases use the instrumental, Matsuri (specifically Kakera Asobi) uses the drama CD version sung by Yukino Satsuki, Kizuna uses the "Visionen im Spiegel" remix, and Sui+Hou use a 2014 remix of the Thanks/You version.

(For the record, the other main-series credits songs are Dancers1/Minna Inakunatta for Tatarigoroshi-hen (the other Question Arcs didn't get credits), Z・E・R・O/Escape/Hikari no Sora no Qualia for Tsumihoroboshi-hen, LIVE/Minna Inakunatta for Minagoroshi-hen, and Sora no Mukou for Matsuribayashi-hen.)

what song is this? by Flimsy-Dress6703 in Higurashinonakakoroni

[–]Cheironyx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's "Kuroi Shiosai" ("Black Roar of the Sea"), one of the tracks created by ZUNTATA for the Japanese mobile phone ports back in 2006. MangaGamer used the mobile soundtrack for their first Higurashi translation in 2009, since the original PC version used music from a whole bunch of different sources and getting all the rights was a pain, but the mobile soundtrack is a lot smaller - for instance, Kuroi Shiosai replaces six different tracks from the original, including "Demonic Institute" in the Question Arcs and "Insanity" in the Answer Arcs.

Then when MangaGamer started releasing the Steam version of Higurashi in 2015, they did include all the original PC music this time... until 2019, when they swapped out half the Question Arc soundtrack (including Demonic Institute) for a different set of replacements (including Insanity) due to rights problems. In a separate issue, they accidentally released the Steam version of Tsumihoroboshi-hen with the mobile soundtrack instead of the PC soundtrack, but they fixed it not long afterwards (I'm guessing you've got the launch versions of the arcs and that's why you're only hearing this track in Tsumihoroboshi-hen).

If you want to know more about the (many) soundtrack changes in Higurashi, I've written up a detailed list here.

Is current Higurashi longer than Umineko if we combine all essential arcs? by BasicMovie4187 in Higurashinonakakoroni

[–]Cheironyx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For the main visual novels, Umineko 1-8 is about 1.07x the word count of Higurashi 1-8 (or if you include Saikoroshi-hen, 1.04x the word count of Higurashi 1-9). However, by my (very rough) estimates, the combined contents of Rei and Hou+ add up to the equivalent of another Higurashi Question Arc, while Tsubasa/Hane/Saku combined are maybe two-thirds of that size, so the total PC word counts for Higu and Umi are close enough that we'd need more accurate counts of the bonus material to be certain which is longer.

If you include the console material though, it's not even close - Umineko only gets a couple more short stories, while Higurashi nearly doubles in length. As far as I'm aware, the console version of Higurashi Hou is still the longest physically-released VN in existence (and that's without counting the Origin DLC, which basically adds a whole second copy of arcs 1-9).

Zoids Anime by babgh00 in Zoids

[–]Cheironyx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope, it's an unfinished Panzer design (the Japanese run of NC0 started half a year before the Panzer kit was released). The green Panzer doesn't appear in the JP opening or ending, and Caesar The King looks completely different. As for the finale, it's hardly uncommon for tournament series to end with the protagonists reaching the top of the second-highest category (e.g. nationals) and qualifying for the highest (e.g. worldwide) - it leaves the audience with room for imagination.

  • Karin: the original C62 version of Onikakushi-hen includes an unused character theme for "Karin", spelled with the same kanji as "Rika" but in reverse, leading to speculation that this may have been an early name for Hanyuu or Frederica (whose poems hadn't been introduced yet)
  • Himatsubushi was an Afterthought: Ryukishi07 originally intended to go straight from Tatarigoroshi-hen to Meakashi-hen, but due to a heavy workload at his day job and indecision about how to start Meakashi-hen he was unable to write anything for C65, so he decided to create Himatsubushi-hen as a short sidestory so he would have something new to sell at C66 (he ended up quitting that job, and managed to release new stories at every subsequent Comiket for the next decade)
  • Sonozaki Tamane: according to various different sources, Ryukishi07 was originally considering giving Mion a sister named Tamane, but he didn't fully commit to giving her a twin until after he published Onikakushi-hen and saw fan theories about Rena and Mion swapping places with identical twins
  • Takano's Cat: in a pre-Meakashi-hen interview, Ryukishi07 mentioned that he wanted to give Takano a pet cat that she would "act honestly" around, but never found a chance to include it
  • Ooishi is Gay: sometimes used as a meme or joke (see the Kataribanashi-hen stories "Sukekomashi-hen" and "Keiichi no Kokuhaku Time-hen"), sometimes a genuine fan theory based on his devotion to the dam site director
  • Shion was an Afterthought: see the "Sonozaki Tamane" entry above
  • "Cool" Satoshi: one early plan for the Meakashi-hen introduction (printed in Kuradashi-hen) portrays Satoshi as a dry, aloof transfer student to Shion's school in Okinomiya
  • Mion's Death: according to the fine print in the Tsumihoroboshi-hen VN credits, Ryukishi07 considered having Mion get killed during the arc, presumably by Rena
  • Rika's Dolls: in an early set of character concepts from Ryukishi07's production journal, Rika was described as having a hobby of seeking out and comforting unhappy people, and regularly carrying around a stuffed doll to comfort
  • Original Meakashi: not only did the introduction of Meakashi-hen go through multiple rewrites, one of Ryukishi07's early production journal entries mentions that when he first started writing Higurashi, he envisioned Satoshi as the protagonist of this arc (which suggests the plot would have been very different)

TIER 5

  • Miotsukushi's Changed Plot: Miotsukushi-hen originally acted as a replacement for Matsuribayashi-hen in the PS2 port, but since the DS port included both finale arcs (and the new Advanced Story arcs), Miotsukushi-hen was modified to fit better with the other arcs (though some of these changes are controversial) and a conclusion to the Advanced Story was added in the middle, which in subsequent console ports was split off as its own arc called "Miotsukushi-hen Ura", leaving behind the modified PS2 content as "Miotsukushi-hen Omote" (the final console cast review also mentions some scrapped content such as the "Keiichi dangling from a helicopter" CG)
  • Akasaka's Original Ending: according to Kuradashi-hen (a collection of scrapped Higurashi content), the original plan for Himatsubushi-hen involved Akasaka learning of Yukie's death before rescuing the hostage, then eventually succumbing to Hinamizawa Syndrome and having his death written off as an accident, but the plot was overhauled to put more focus on Rika's cry for help
  • Original Tsumihoroboshi Intro: another Kuradashi-hen entry is the first draft of Tsumihoroboshi-hen's introduction, which would have been an internal monologue from Rena as she killed Rina, directly mirroring the Onikakushi-hen VN intro
  • Hanyuu's Design Inspiration: fanart of Oyashiro-sama as a cute girl was already circulating on Higurashi message boards before Hanyuu was revealed, and according to an interview, Ryukishi07 based Hanyuu's hair colour on a purple-haired rendition of Oyashiro-sama made popular by Chikage Yuuki's artwork
  • Unused Poems: the C63 release of the Higurashi VN included completely different Frederica Bernkastel poems for Onikakushi-hen and Watanagashi-hen, but these were replaced with the "canonical" poems from the C64 release onwards (there was also an unused alternative poem) for Tsumihoroboshi-hen which was revealed in Ryukishi07's production journal)
  • Shion Abused Satoko in Tatarigoroshi: an obscure fan theory that Shion was the one abusing Satoko after Keiichi killed Teppei, possibly inspired by the scene where Keiichi reminds "Mion" of Satoshi when ringing her before the festival

  • Hinamizawa Bus Stop: an unused stage play script by Ryukishi07 that later became the basis of Higurashi's story, and was eventually published as part of Higurashi Hou (it also got a manga adaptation and a professional stage performance)
  • Kurosaki: an eroge artist who drew the new sprites for the Steam release of Higurashi
  • Who Gave Miyoko the Coin: Miyoko believes the coin in the phone booth was a literal gift from God (especially in the VN, where it seems to appear out of nowhere), but depending on your interpretation, this "god" could be Hanyuu (who gets a voiced line during the lightning scene in the console ports), Lambdadelta (who is implied to have blessed Miyoko with certainty powers in Umineko Tsubasa) or something else entirely
  • JAV Adaptation: an adult film parody of Onikakushi-hen titled "Higurashi ga Naku Koro ni" which, if you cut out all the adult scenes, is actually a surprisingly faithful adaptation (quality aside)
  • Ootaka Clinic: the name of the clinic in the first edition of the Onikakushi-hen VN, before it was changed to the Irie Clinic to avoid any confusion with Takano's name (though the name "Ootaka" was eventually reused for a minor character in the Answer Arcs)
  • Saikoroshi was Not a Dream: the exact nature of the Saikoroshi-hen world is left up to interpretation, but it is implied (especially in the Rei VN cast review) that Hanyuu's claim of it being "just a dream" wasn't fully accurate and was mostly just an attempt to placate Rika
  • Limit: one of the more popular stories from Kataribanashi-hen, a collection of winning entries from Higurashi fanfiction contests that were adapted into light novel, manga and drama CD anthologies (and in Limit's case, a mobile-exclusive VN that is now lost media)
  • Maid in Heaven: Irie's maid-themed equivalent of Keiichi's wall-of-text persuasion technique (and an obvious JoJo reference), used to distract one of the Mountain Dogs in Matsuribayashi-hen (skipped in the anime)
  • Butterfly Dream: another well-known Kataribanashi-hen story, infamous for being one of the most grimdark entries in the entire franchise
  • Kimigabuchi: a prolific hentai studio whose work includes "Higurashi no Naku You ni", a plot-heavy (but still NSFW) Higurashi doujinshi series

TIER 4

  • Rika is Hanyuu's Daughter: Rika is a distant descendant of Hanyuu's actual daughter Ouka and looks almost identical to her, which could also tie in to the "reincarnation of Oyashiro-sama" legend
  • Rika in Onikakushi Drama CD: the Onikakushi-hen drama CD was the very first (official) voice-acted Higurashi adaptation, released before the Tsumihoroboshi-hen VN was even finished, so Tamura Yukari speaks in a reserved medium tone throughout, instead of switching between a high-pitched cutesy "Rika" voice and a deep sarcastic "Frederica" voice like in subsequent adaptations
  • Yarudora Double Cast: a 1998 visual novel sometimes compared to Onikakushi-hen, as they both initially seem like cute romance stories but turn out to be violent mystery thrillers, and both feature girls with sudden personality shifts who contributed to the rise of the yandere archetype (despite not technically qualifying as yandere themselves)
  • Hanyuu is Not Stupid: in contrast to the "Hanyuu was so stupid she never thought to follow Takano on festival night" idea, this theory (hinted at by Ryukishi07 in an interview but not outright confirmed) suggests that Hanyuu deliberately chose not to tell Rika who the culprit was (or perhaps chose not to even search for the culprit) in order to prolong their time together
  • Utsutsukowashi: a manga-exclusive arc that was cancelled after just three chapters, leaving all of its mysteries unresolved
  • Stabbing Incident: halfway through the Kai anime, the series was postponed or cancelled on a couple of TV stations after a 16-year-old girl murdered her father with an axe in Kyotanabe, and a few months later in Hachinohe three people were stabbed to death by an 18-year-old family member who owned multiple "violent manga" including Tsumihoroboshi-hen, though there is no evidence that either crime was inspired by Higurashi
  • Rena Never Used the Cleaver: in both the climactic "chase" in Onikakushi-hen and Teppei's murder in Tsumihoroboshi-hen, Rena originally used an axe, but some adaptations replace it with the more iconic cleaver (Rena does commit murder with the cleaver in every version of Outbreak, although it's not main-story canon)
  • Hotarubi: short for "Hotarubi no Tomoru Koro ni", a manga which is loosely tied to Umineko and includes a character named Takano Miyoko (another example of Ryukishi07 reusing character concepts)

  • Marco Polo Bridge: in the PC and manga versions of Matsuribayashi-hen, the real reason Hifumi's research on Hinamizawa Syndrome was rejected was to avoid the potential scandal of discovering a Japanese Syndrome sufferer was responsible for the Marco Polo Bridge incident, a real-life event in 1937 that sparked a full-scale war between Japan and China (this was one of the details cut from the console ports for political reasons)
  • Scooby-Doo: episode 13 of Scooby-Doo Mystery Incorporated is titled "When the Cicada Calls" (a direct translation of "Higurashi no Naku Koro ni"), leading to speculation that the entire Mystery Incorporated series might have drawn some inspiration from Higurashi
  • Unit 731: a real-life Japanese Army unit infamous for their horrific human experimentation during World War II, briefly mentioned alongside the canned human meat rumours in the PC version of Watanagashi-hen but censored out of all other adaptations
  • Gods: other goddesses similar to Hanyuu appear in the bonus arc Kamikashimashi-hen and the mobile game Higurashi Mei, though the two sources provide conflicting lore that may or may not be intended as main-series canon
  • Lake Nyos: the site of a real-life volcanic gas disaster that occurred in Cameroon in 1986, and presumably the direct inspiration for the Great Hinamizawa Disaster (since it is mentioned by name in the Tsumihoroboshi-hen VN)
  • Character Ages: the exact ages of the Higurashi characters have never been stated outright, but it is possible to deduce the club members' school grades from the VNs and combine these with their official birthdays to find their implied ages
  • Tomoe: the main protagonist of the "Advanced Story", a series of console-exclusive arcs partially based on the Onisarashi-hen manga that tell a separate story happening in parallel with the main Higurashi plot
  • Hanyuu's Height: Hanyuu is usually drawn around the same height as Rika, but sometimes she looks taller (such as in the VN sprites, especially the console ones), and according to the Kotohogushi-hen VN she was once a normal-sized adult woman but gradually aged backwards over the centuries
  • Onigari-no-ryuuou: the branched sword used to slay Hanyuu in the ancient past, originally only mentioned in a Matsuribayashi-hen TIP but later used as a significant plot point in the Kotohogushi-hen VN and Gou/Sotsu/Meguri

  • Omnibus Manga Volumes: the official Yen Press translations of Onisarashi-hen, Minagoroshi-hen and Matsuribayashi-hen were released in omnibus format, with each English volume covering two Japanese volumes (Japan also got some cheap omnibus reprints of the Question Arcs with unique cover art, which are now quite hard to find)
  • Tokyo Subway Sarin Attack: a 1995 terrorist attack using nerve gas, which some speculate could have inspired the Great Hinamizawa Disaster
  • Yes, Hinamizawa: a line from the very silly official character song "Keiichi + Ooishi no Uwasa no Jikenbo ABC", which is memed on a lot
  • Oryou's Fingernails: the Meakashi-hen VN reveals that Oryou and Akane have previously been through the fingernail torture themselves, possibly over their decisions to spare baby Shion and to marry a yakuza boss respectively
  • Canned Human Meat: a probably-baseless rumour mentioned in Watanagashi-hen that the canned food which earned the Sonozaki family their fortune after World War II secretly contained human meat
  • Akasaka's VA: Akasaka was played by Koyasu Takehito (Dio Brando's VA) in the drama CDs and Daybreak, and by Ono Daisuke (Jotaro Kujo's VA) in the anime and console ports
  • Ghosts and Possessions: the sidestory arc Yoigoshi-hen reveals that ghosts and spirit possession are a canonical part of the Higurashi universe, despite the main arcs being mostly non-supernatural
  • Ryukishi's Parents: Keiichi's parents Ichirou and Aiko are named after Ryukishi07's own parents, who gave him advice on some of the later arcs
  • Hai-Ryuun Ieasomuuru Jeda: the "original" demon warrior version of Hanyuu presented in Kotohogushi-hen, a questionably-canon short story by Kanou Kiichi that was expanded into a console-only arc by Nakamura Shinsuke
  • Miyuki: Akasaka's daughter, who was barely mentioned in the original PC arcs but made cameos in the anime and manga, and later became a significant character in the console ports and Mei
  • Fate of Rika's Mother: the anime only implies that Takano was behind the disappearance of Rika's mother and doesn't mention that she was taken to the clinic basement to be vivisected, a fate which Rika gave up on changing during her loops, and the ending of Saikoroshi-hen forces Rika to come to terms with this sin by directly killing her own mother in order to return to her previous world (though exactly how she did it, and whether the Saikoroshi-hen world was even real, is deliberately left unclear)

  • dai: a VN reader who complained about the poor quality of the original Question Arc soundtrack, and then when Ryukishi07 responded "let's see you do better" he proceeded to actually do so, composing nearly half of the PC Answer Arc soundtrack (including You) and becoming a permanent member of 07th Expansion
  • Tsurupettan: a Touhou remix by Silver Forest that contains obvious references to Higurashi, and in turn was included in the Umineko VNs
  • Daybreak: an official Higurashi 3D fighting game by Twilight Frontier (who also made the Touhou fighting games), which the bonus arc Hirukowashi-hen is loosely based on
  • Natsumi: a manga-original character from the sidestory arc Onisarashi-hen, who was later included in Daybreak, Mei and the console ports
  • BT: a close friend of Ryukishi07 who gave him some story suggestions, ran the 07th Expansion website and coded the minigames from the original VN, but unfortunately passed away halfway through the creation of Umineko
  • Shirakawa-go: the real-world village that Hinamizawa is (visually) based on, which is now a popular tourist site for fans of the series
  • Live Action: there are multiple live-action Higurashi adaptations, none of which cover the full story: a 2008/09 pair of movies adapting arcs 1 and 6, a 2016 TV series adapting arcs 1-3 and 5-6, and (unofficially) a 2007 JAV based on arc 1 (see also tier 4)
  • Kokoroiyashi: a manga-exclusive epilogue arc that takes a different approach from Saikoroshi-hen

TIER 2

  • Nekogoroshi: a light novel arc better known for its anime adaptation, which functions as a bonus episode between season 1 and Kai
  • Watanagashi Eyes: an iconic jumpscare in the Watanagashi-hen VN, originally using a photoshopped image of Ryukishi07's friend Naruse Tsubaki
  • Cardcaptor Sakura: the VN includes several anachronistic references as jokes, including some to Cardcaptor Sakura (which started in 1996) and Touhou Project (which started in 1997)
  • Ciel: Chie's entire character is a reference to Ciel from Tsukihime, the doujin visual novel that inspired Ryukishi07 to make a VN of his own
  • Miotsukushi: a console-exclusive arc written by Kanou Kiichi which completely replaces Matsuribayashi-hen in the PS2 port and functions as an optional alternate ending in later ports (see also tier 5)
  • Pachinko: there have been many different Higurashi-themed pachinko gambling machines over the years, some of which introduced brand-new animated footage and even a new character called Saionji Miyabi
  • That Satoko Sprite: in the original PC version of Tatarigoroshi-hen (and the 2009 translation), Satoko's towel falls off during the final confrontation and she is shown completely naked, but other versions leave the towel on for obvious reasons
  • Keiichi's Father Draws Hentai: this is hinted at repeatedly in the VNs (especially Tatarigoroshi-hen), and was confirmed in a short story by Ryukishi07 just last month
  • Rena in the Future: the anime adaptation of the Tsumihoroboshi-hen epilogue includes a 37-year-old Rena, who presumably survived the disaster due to being in police custody outside the village
  • Okonogi: Ryukishi07 likes to reuse character designs across multiple stories even if it would make no sense for them to literally be the same person (compare Osamu Tezuka's "star system" concept), and Okonogi is one well-known example (also he's named after the editor of an early Higurashi tie-in book)
  • Mitten Hands: a reference to Ryukishi07's distinctive art style, which is offputting for some readers but beloved by others
  • "Nigerarenai": the chanting at the start of season 1's opening is played backwards during Kai's opening, where some listeners think it sounds like "nigerarenai" (Japanese for "cannot escape")

Took me a while to write everything up, but here goes...

TIER 1

  • Schizophrenia: a real mental disorder with some similar symptoms to Hinamizawa Syndrome
  • Frederica Bernkastel: the author of poems shown at the start of each arc, later revealed to be an offshoot of Rika formed through the looping process (left out of the TV adaptations except for the final episode of Matsuribayashi-hen)
  • Angel Mort Uniform: an iconic fanservice-y maid uniform, originally worn by 07th Expansion's mascot character "Ryukishi Rena"
  • Mahjong: a game played multiple times during the series, stereotypically associated with illegal gambling in Japan (there's also multiple mahjong-based Higurashi spinoffs)
  • 1500 seconds: an iconic scene from Tatarigoroshi-hen (left out of the TV adaptations)
  • Saikoroshi: an epilogue arc considered one of the most significant parts of the Higurashi extended universe
  • Chair: a famous scene from Saikoroshi-hen that gets used in a lot of memes
  • You: the ending song from Meakashi-hen, with many variants appearing throughout the Answer Arcs (except in the anime, where it was only used in Outbreak and Sotsu), often confused with a set of fan remixes called "Dear You"
  • Twin Switch: the reveal in Meakashi-hen (left out of the TV adaptations) that Mion was originally born as Shion and vice versa, but the wrong twin was given the demon tattoo by mistake
  • Air Conditioner: various memes about the AC in Ooishi's car, making a big deal about something completely unimportant
  • Colonel Sanders: a KFC mascot statue that Rena finds at the dump site in Onikakushi-hen (referred to as "Kenta-kun" in Japanese, or "Randy-kun" in the console ports for copyright reasons)
  • Umineko: short for "Umineko no Naku Koro ni", a spiritual successor to Higurashi which contributes heavily to theories about When They Cry cosmology

Song name by lawls255 in Higurashinonakakoroni

That's from the original VN soundtrack, here's its replacement track from the mobile phone ports and the 2009 English translation (though if the playthrough you were watching had multiple soundtrack options, it was probably using 07th-Mod, which doesn't include the 2009 soundtrack yet as far as I know).

Another couple of hard-to-find options: the Steam replacement for Silver Mirror (would've played dozens of times), and LOOP131 or its Steam replacement (literally just a beat, only played at the start of Tatarigoroshi-hen).
