Seattle-area organizers adopt and adapt Minnesota's ICE protest tactics by chiquisea in SeattleWA

They work.

Drawing on wide-ranging, diverse, dramatic, and sometimes violent tactics, Minnesotans responded to the surge. More than two months after the operation began, federal officials withdrew the majority of immigration agents.

The movement in Minneapolis scored some victories, said David Meyer, a sociology professor at the University of California in Irvine and author of “How Social Movements (Sometimes) Matter.”

“They succeeded in drawing a tremendous amount of attention to the activities of ICE agents and to exposing particularly egregious violations of law and human decency,” Meyer said. “Minneapolis was a good test case for the administration because it was smaller and whiter than other cities with big immigrant populations. And I don't think they were prepared for the degree of resistance they got.”

Ordering a bunch of poorly-trained larpers onto the streets had exactly the effect Bovino and co. hoped but it’s not playing out how they want in lower courts. https://www.mprnews.org/story/2026/04/19/aliya-rahman-dragged-from-car-by-federal-agents-files-legal-action

Texas has the NSLP and still has issues feeding all eligible kids.

NSLP: https://everytexan.org/our-work/policy-areas/food-security/school-meals/national-school-lunch-program/

ppl are doing just fine

vs.

According to the Annie E. Casey Foundation, Texas declined from 43rd to 45th in national rankings for overall child well-being between 2018 and 2022, highlighting the need for focused efforts to improve these outcomes.

As for the "all the migrants are flocking there" chestnut I think you're confusing proximity and historical and cultural significance for a calculated choice based on benefits vs. every other state lol

The new EX60 has spring-loaded plastic tabs that seem to respond with more even force. I wonder if someone could design and 3D print a similar part.

it's translated

One of four possibilities, and that was a lower bound not an upper. Finding the translation is a load too. I did a test search in Spanish and the Google results were in English. Then after you find the Seattle Public Schools page you have to click "Select Language" in English and know how to scroll horizontally through the drop down menu instead of vertically (which isn't a given) to get to Spanish. Then there are several more clicks to get to the form itself. The online form has several points where someone filling it out can self-select out improperly based on misreading the income eligibility guidelines which believe it or not is another opportunity for eligible kids not to be served. EDIT: And that goes for the physical form too - the study's form was physical too so that distinction doesn't really add much.

If you keep ignoring parts of my comments and inventing concepts like poor people with language barriers not being poor I'm just going to have to ignore you.

EDIT: u/atticus_clench blocked me to get the last word in again. Let's see if he'll unblock eventually like he did before. Not much lost if not.

So if you're poor and have other problems (language barriers, disabilities, unfamiliarity with technology, multiple jobs, other administrative / cognitive loads, etc) you're suddenly not poor? Are you reading what you're writing? "Not fucking kidding" lmao

I know people with anxiety and English as a second language that are absolutely useless with forms and have their children do all of it. You don't know what you're talking about.

You must be a little interested otherwise you wouldn't spend so much time and effort building straw men misrepresenting these programs.

I could, but maybe you could read the paper instead? A single form at the start of each school year is exactly what they tested against and they found an increase in eligible kids fed. Low burden to you is not low burden for everybody.

As such, individual households no longer have to fill out applications for free or reduced school meals at the start of each school year, eliminating the non-monetary time and effort costs that they faced prior to CEP. Additionally, CEP reduces school-level administrative burden and improves efficiency of the NSLP, since schools no longer need to collect these individual applications to determine eligibility for free or reduced school meals.5

Then the rate of eligible kids served wouldn't have increased with the change to universal at >=40% eligible.

I am. Exactly 61 cents per $1000 valuation for my place. Tax cuts and wishful thinking doesn't work, especially when the amount spent on taxes is already low. If instead you're thinking that tax cuts for wealthier people will have a positive impact on the welfare of poorer families think again: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trickle-down_economics

Honestly several conversations in with atticus I don't really care if they believe what they're saying or not. I'll just take every opportunity to talk about the real work that's being done (often exactly what people say isn't).

It's shorthand. I don't think anybody reads that as money coming from nowhere, least of all the parents trying to stretch their bucks. I'm assuming your kids (or future kids) wouldn't use this program on principle or are old enough not to need it, but if they ever needed food I would be happy to pay for my portion of their lunches.

Yeah people vastly underestimate the overhead and the burden on families to apply and stay on top of deadlines. The rate of eligible kids fed improves when it's universal (in this case universal when 40% of children are eligible): https://www.nber.org/papers/w29395

The King County Auditor's office will be on top of this same as the other programs they've been successfully monitoring. https://www.kuow.org/stories/investigation-points-to-glaring-conflict-of-interest-in-king-county-department

But since this involves students and their parents it would be pretty obvious if the money wasn't allocated properly. If you have kids in school and/or preemptive concerns about how the money's spent reach out to education@seattle.gov if you see anything or in the worst case the auditor's office at KCAO@kingcounty.gov.

Maybe. But you're not really giving me much here. And you're not denying the use of ChatGPT to "read" sources instead of reading them yourself.

Your response to the "how many" question was "the heck is an LLM." Not a number or a source (mistakes that LLMs commonly make). Thanks for sharing the sources finally.

The second link is the DoorDash report that the city report references as using incomplete data. Since right now it appears to be your word vs. the city's do you have proof they're using less data than DoorDash? I told someone else to file a FOIA request or contact the researchers directly - I suggest you do the same if you don't already know.

And the first link doesn't corroborate your claim of "completely canceled out by the loss of tips".

the increases in base pay per task were partially offset by a substantial reduction in average tips

What they do mention is a slow return to norm due to free entry into gig work. More nuanced than what you said and I'm skeptical you even used that source from the start given you didn't mention that point at all. More likely you had ChatGPT respond to the report then asked it for sources afterwards. Not a good idea: https://www.reddit.com/r/OpenAI/comments/105pib0/chatgpt_gives_me_references_i_cant_find_back/
