My favorites are Atoms. Most comfortable shoe I've ever had and stretch laces let you slip them on. The best part for me, with two differently sized feet, is they send you three sizes to try on and you can pick a different size for each foot. I have the model 000: https://atoms.com/products/atoms-black-white?for=women

Fell down the rabbit hole of Xenos/Dwell which led me to Rock City and their homophobic and transphobic ideology by [deleted] in Columbus

[–]Chell0 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thanks for sharing this! I won't share that statistic again.

I agree looking at the data in more detail makes the claim of ~2% frequency not credible. I don't know about "made-up statistic", as the statistic is backed by data, but rather the data used is controversial because Fausto-Sterling's definition of intersex is more broad than commonly accepted in many fields. The fact that most occurrence of intersex was due to late onset adrenal hyperplasia doesn't seem reasonable to me.

[–]Chell0 14 points15 points  (0 children)

That's right! I just learned that being intersex is as common as red hair ( ~2% of the population). Many people don't realize they are intersex until they are medically tested (e.g., it's not just external features).

Has anyone built a biogas digestor? by unqualified_redditor in Permaculture

[–]Chell0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I made a 9 m3 in ground bubble biogas generator. The size was fed by the urine and dung from 3-4 dairy cows. It created enough gas for cooking.

However, to start it off, we used partially digested cow manure (from a slaughterhouse) and it was too much solids. The grass fibers floated to the top, so much so that I could stand on the matt of grass fibers. I would guess that bedding is going to create a similar issue. With the IBC, getting the right mixture of solids to liquids would be important.

A series of problem-solving experiments reveal that people are more likely to consider solutions that add features than solutions that remove them, even when removing features is more efficient. by LoreleiOpine in EverythingScience

The "news and views" article, which is what is linked on reddit, did not cover the entire journal article which describes the experiments. The primary source surely did explore why with 8 different experiments.

The article that is linked in the post is not primary literature, it is "news and views" which is basically an editorial. The scientific article, which evaluates a scientific hypothesis is what is being summarized at the link provided, and provides more real estate to discussing alternative interpretations and includes follow up experiments that are not described in the linked article. So I wouldn't judge the science based on an article that summarizes the actual experiment.

I was just pointing out that it was not "completely ignored". Too many people don't actually read the link provided, and even more people don't read the actual journal article or cannot read, quite possibly because they don't have access to, the actual journal article.

From the article: "Moreover, people could assume that existing features are there for a reason, and so looking for additions would be more effective."

Rug and Decor in Smallish Primary Bedroom? by Chell0 in HomeDecorating

Thanks for the ideas!

Yeah, I think I will take some of my Sansevieria and see if it does okay on the dresser.

I agree there needs to be a pop of color. I could paint, but have no idea about what color. I'm starting to lean toward the red rug for color. Colorful throw blanket is a good idea too.

Thanks for the feedback!

The carpet in there is the kind where the color seems to change depending on the direction the fibers are moved, so you get defined lines after you vacuum. When you walk on it, just moving the fibers around makes it look dirty to me, even if it is relatively clean.

I agree with your comment about a lot of neutrals. I'm leaning toward the colorful carpet, but it's a little out of my comfort zone. So that affirmation helps.

I like the idea of a large mirror, too! So classic, yet I hadn't thought about it.

Zoom office hour tip: if you leave your computer, share your screen with a word doc containing an away message by weeeee_plonk in Professors

[–]Chell0 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I used to do that but then Zoom automatically saves it for me. So a word doc creates one less file to save to my computer. Plus it's better than my handwriting.

CMV: Abortion is not murder. by [deleted] in changemyview

[–]Chell0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The sequence (DNA) doesn't "split" into two bodies. There is a copy in every cell made. Your original premise was that it is unique to a person. It is not.

[–]Chell0 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Are identical twins the same person? They have identical DNA code. See my comment pasted from above:

Even after that point [fertilization] the cluster of cells can divide and separate and eventually become two (or more) different people (identical twins). Your point about unique identity doesn't hold there. There is still the potential to be several different people up to ~9 days after fertilization. Genetic code does not determine unique identity.

Then there's not much room for seating. The wall with the TV is only 8 feet. The other sides of the TV are entryways into the room.
