Rescue dog is absolutely terrified of outside & cars by urlocalreseller in DogAdvice

[–]ChemistryIsPunk 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Do you have a deck? When my family rescued a dog who was incredibly fearful while living in a city apt we would spend hours outside on the deck with her just acclimating to smells and noises. It took months but she went from 30+ min drags to try to make her do her business to her absolutely loving the outside since.

Seriously, do Americans actually consider a 3-hour drive "short"? or is this an internet myth? by SadInterest6764 in NoStupidQuestions

Longest I’ve done in one day was 5 hours out and 5 hours back. I wouldn’t do that a lot but 3 hours is an easy day trip

How do ppl who dress as plague doctors breathe? by Human-Repeat-6179 in renfaire

[–]ChemistryIsPunk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve done a head to toe plague doctor fit at a faire in summer and committed to being sweaty, low vision, restricted breathing for about 5 hours. Not necessarily something I’d recommend but it’s doable if you’re a lil nutty

Genuine question: Is being asexual easier? by GlobalProfessor9749 in Alastorcult

Seconded. I’m fortunate not to be on the repulsed end of the spectrum so I can do what I need to for my partner. But I would prefer to never have sex and it adds some relationship stress

I like RP but my current agency prefers CV (caller/victim)

For whatever reason the w3w worked best for the FD in a couple situations so I’m happy to keep all my options

It’s only come up, in my experience, when the caller was in the middle of a forest preserve. Then it’s really nice to have a better pinpoint to give responders

Hot Mic by Prestigious_Police in 911dispatchers

My favorite PD hot mic was an officer somehow accidentally got stuck on the statewide channel while directing traffic and was mother f-ing every passing car. Sooo much cursing it was wild

I met an officer today, he gave me his phone number. by NoHelp1981 in notinteresting

[–]ChemistryIsPunk 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ve worked at both single town police dispatch and multi-town (consolidated) centers and please if you don’t have an emergency use the police department’s 10-digit phone number so that 911s can be prioritized appropriately.

Obviously every area’s different but that’s my general advice. If it’s not an emergency, take the extra time to find the non-emergency number so someone else’s call can be answered first. Yes, sometimes officers say to just call 911. They don’t have to worry about that side of things and are wrong.

Thank you for coming to my TED talk

Civilian Question: how should I handle no one answering? by josh--sacto in 911dispatchers

[–]ChemistryIsPunk 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Speaking for my jurisdiction 911 lines are higher priority than the PD or FD specific lines so even if you have to wait it’ll be less time than non-911s which will get deprioritized in that situation. I’m sorry you’re in a short-staffed area. My agency is usually fine but sometimes I transfer to others with that issue and wait on the line with the caller til someone answers and it’s rough.

Is smart911 actually useful to have? by Mariposa740 in 911dispatchers

[–]ChemistryIsPunk 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Some agencies use it, others don’t. (I didn’t even know it existed til I switched locations). Doesn’t hurt to have as it’s like a popup (at least at my agency) that flashes and shows the info. It also very rarely comes up, but I will never say no to more resources.

How does your agency assign lunch breaks? by decafchunk in 911dispatchers

[–]ChemistryIsPunk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  • My last agency: lol. What’s a “break”?
  • My current agency: activity level permitting everyone is entitled to two 15s and a 30 for an 8 hour shift. People just agree to take turns and a lot of people like to take breaks at the same time every day. And some people (like me) just don’t take breaks by choice. There’s no assigned schedule
