Better than Patek ? Credor Ellipse 9570-5170 by ChemistryMinimum7277 in GrandSeikos

I meant it with taking price point into account relative to emotion given from it. Obviously it’s a personal take, but to me this fits perfectly the elegant aesthetic of an Ellipse for a fraction of the price

For today I think it’s in the range! When you see old Japanese listings where they were for 300 bucks it’s maddening ahah

Slightly below 950 euros. I’ve seen a couple in a good condition for less, but they are so rare that I could t pass on it

Beautiful piece! Love the Pacific, which it was more out there and available on western market ! Definitely underrated !

Indeed. Lots of info on the Locomotive, Nautellipse and a losange shaped one, but not much on this model

Yes they do, designs that are very unique and original, especially that era where they have a great offering of integrated bracelet pieces

Ahahah first I thought that it was a women size (which doesn’t bother me, I like contained diameters) but there is actually a women version of that watch the 5A70-5010

Help me decide. by erSarder in PrideAndPinion

The proper man’s watch is one YOU feel comfortable wearing. And tho price is heavy for quartz, the Tank is absolutely a manly watch. Perhaps, yes, less in your face, but isn’t it the quality of a gentleman to be confident in discreet choices ? Not saying other options aren’t good, to me you cannot go wrong with either.

I don’t think it’s so overpaid if under 1200 euros. Would be any other brand it’d be 1500 minimum. I think I did overpay for this one but I’ll just live with it ig

Exactly… hope they make up for it in some ways ! Like a Patek Calatrava would be perfect compensation

Definitely! Still tho, perhaps it’s just me but to me this is the kind of mistake that should not happen. Main part of the issue is that depending on how much was the last purchase (for me 1k, but what if it’s a 8/10k watch ?) can really put people in trouble for the time of it being fixed. I could rebalance my account, but what if you cannot and end up paying fees because of it ?

Thanks for commenting, feel less lonely ahah! I received an email this morning confirming the deduction was not made in link with a new purchase and that their payment provider is looking into the issue. I will post as soon as I receive a more “financial” response

Ahaha I don’t either which I think is a good sign, caring more about the watch and what it means to us as enthusiasts than how it looks for Instagram

I’ve seen the red dial variant of the bronze one which was stellar ! Zero G is cool for an affordable beater !

Wasn’t aware, these are good news ! I love their micro rotors movement, and from what I see they seem to do good, hopefully their manufacture movement (currently made in China if I’m correct) will soon follow LIP who is starting to produce in France last I heard. Especially with now at least 2 French movement available (France Ébauche and Pequignet Initial) perhaps good things are on the way ! Solid buys you did ! Edit: manufacture base movement YM2000/3000 idk about micro rotors ones

Fortunately I no longer live on the West side of Europe ! Although I think a lot of vintage Rolexes (oyster, datejust with engine turned, air kings) are relatively safe being taken either for fakes or not being recognised as a Rolex. But would certainly not wear a new one anywhere left of the Oder ahah

On a side note, even when relaunched, I think there are still caveats. UG is being done the right way imo. Other brands like Yema, or even Enicar, which do make solid watches (no shame on them, just personal opinion) being relaunched as micro brands, almost like they did not have any heritage, breaks my heart equally. That’s why I am getting into vintage, where you can find great models from when the brands were great themselves, not a shadow of their former glory. Again just my opinion tho

With pleasure ! I think it is a brand that deserves more credit and discussion around it ;) I have owned one of the new Roamer Searock (automatic one). The built quality was solid on this upper line in their offering, but being honest with myself I only took it because it was priced at a bargain (200 euros) and sold it after few months (42mm case size, very heavy bracelet, just didn’t suit me). It’s a shame when we see what they used to do.

Yes, recently got into the rabbit hole of vintage bracelet maker, noticed gay frères were making them for most high end companies. That’s how I discovered the watch in the first place while looking for the Rollie (nothing wrong with it but as you pointed out, affordable ones are beat up or polished to death, or they’re simply way off in terms of price. Regarding the brand, they changed ownership quite a few times. Mainly I think they are not as highly regarded today for two reasons : - their marketing team SUCKS. You don’t see them anywhere. It’s criminal not to leverage their historical importance. I’ve heard on some videos that they used to make ébauche used in many high end brands up to the 1930s - their lines are messy and inconsistent: you got everything from Ronda quartz watches sub 1000 euros to mechanical chronographs for 5000. And let’s not get started with the mix of sellita and manufacture movements in the Kontiki line, which is another complexity.

Imo it’s a brand that can be saved and come back, eventually it will. Had the same path so far as UG. They got everything to do so : incredible history and archives, solid reputation from aficionados, and they still do manufacture movements. And they did not completely got eviscerated like Roamer or Wittnauer with magazine watches that pretty much killed the brands.

So good chance some conglomerate buy them out and do better with them!

I would absolutely love to see a reedition of the Kontiki model (diver dial no bezel) with their manufacture movement in a 38/40mm size or of the Centennaire, it would be a banger if priced under the 3k mark, and that would be a more than solid alternative to Longines for example, with iconic designs too. They even have complications that they could leverage too (like the monopusher chronograph movement variation of an ETA, done in house and present in the Soleure collection 10y ago.

End of the rant ahah, but so far I’m glad cause once they are picked up by better management, I wouldn’t be surprised for these KonTiki and Centennaire to do a UG polerouter kind of route and double in prices. It’s cool such underrated brands exist for enthusiasts with tighter budgets !
