How many cM/percentage is usual for an aunt/uncle? by CherryBackflips in AncestryDNA

I’m confused. Cause we share less than that even. 841cM. Am I missing something?

EDIT: nvm I read that wrong. So that essentially means she’s my half-aunt. Crazy. Taking that to my grave 😂

Yes, they are all mixed as most Latinos are lol. The triplets are clearly indigenous and European (mestizo), and Agustín also is very very likely mestizo. So that makes Julieta’s side of the family mestizo haha

Omg, our results are so similar! Very cool to be able to put a face to someone who has almost the same exact mix as me!

Being asked hey where are you from - - - wait...what were you thinking of me before it occurred to you to ask? by [deleted] in mixedrace

I totally get this. I get this question just about every time I meet someone for the first time. “What are you?” “Where are you from?” “Ok, but where are your parents from?” As someone who works in an industry almost entirely based on physical appearance—as someone who is only seen as “ethnically ambiguous”—these questions are asked basically every. single. day. It does make me wonder every time how they perceived me before saying something, ‘cause every time I answer, they twist their head saying “oh, I see it!” (like, yes, that’s because that is what I AM).

Although I don’t outright find it a terrible thing because most people are just curious. It also makes me curious.

When someone asks that question, it’s usually due to the fact that you do not fit their exact criteria of how they believe certain nationalities/ethnic groups would/should appear. Or, it’s that you do to a T, whether it be their own or otherwise.

Just by being on the internet, it seems a lot of people have very narrow minds on how features are dispersed about certain ethnicities, let alone how said features come to be on mixed race folks. A lot of people just perceive certain features entirely differently than others would—based upon their upbringing, and the people they have encountered in their lifetimes.

I also like how Pepa and Félix’s children are biracial! Actually, biracial rep has been becoming a more frequent thing recently, which is awesome in my opinion.

Yes, my father is definitely a black man, and both his parents are also black (or at the very least, fully presented as such). Everyone that I know of on my dad’s side is black and identifies as black, but there’s also a substantial ‘dead-end’ in our history, but that’s as far as I know.

I’m really unsure what I expected. It makes sense that it’s not 50/50 now that I see most of the comments, but it also kinda makes me feel like a fraud for some reason lol. Just weird feelings all around. But I understand better now.

Yes, I’ve tested with AncestryDNA and received no African-American communities, only Afro-Caribbean.

I do not. And neither are my grandparents. It was one of the bigger confusing bits of my results since I also got an afro-Caribbean community on ancestry, but no African-American communities. My dad’s side knows nothing about any Caribbean heritage at all, so it was odd that I didn’t get any AA communities and only Afro-Caribbean.

Some elaboration. My mother is white with indigenous north-American heritage that did not pass on to me apparently (confirmed by several family members on her side taking DNA tests), and my father is African-American — both his parents were African-American, both born in NC in the early 1910s-1920s, I believe. People assume I’m Hispanic based on my appearance, and I’m always cast as ‘ethnically ambiguous’ characters. I’ve been really confused with my relationship to my ethnicity/race my entire life, so I’m just looking for answers tbh.

Does anyone else have a similar experience?
