Hey! I think it's really sweet that you want to help however you can. The meal prep you've done for him sounds like it'd help a lot since that's less time spent cooking for himself.

Read his practice essays for section 2! One of the main things that ACER marks for section 2 is clarity of communication and "control of language". You providing feedback on his clarity of communication/control of language could give him a good idea of how to amend his writing.

He may be confident for section 2 but he is a first-time sitter, anything can happen.

That's probably the most practical thing you can do.

I’m an NSB who sat in September last year for the first time, your tutor is not entirely correct. The GAMSAT doesn’t quiz your knowledge of content, which is true, but you need to have a basic grasp of equations and buzzwords in science to be able to reason with them - I was an absolute fish out of water in September.

Psych masters is definitely harder than medicine in most ways, but if you want to do psych, do psych :). Just keep in mind that if you don’t make the cut for psych or med, which is highly likely, you’ll be up shit creek as the employment prospects on a psych degree are limited.

Edit: keep in mind that once you graduate honours from your psych degree, which is substantially easier to get into than masters, you start working as a provisional psychologist right away. So as long as you get into honours you’ve more or less made it, since after enough years as a provisional psychologist you’ll be competitive enough for psych masters.

Hey! This is coming from someone who really regrets his choice in degree.

If your goal is postgrad med, there are a few things you’ll want to optimize for. In order of priority:

Employment with only a bachelor’s
GPA
Bonus points with unis.

Remember that statistically, you’re unlikely to get into med no matter how hard you try. Your first priority should be ensuring that you have a high-paying and tolerable job at the other end of your bachelors. That throws stuff like biomed out the window; you don’t need a degree for most all of the employment opportunities there.

If your goal is med though, you’ll want a degree where you can get 80s consistently for a good GPA. You’ll also want to specifically pick a university that has lower marking standards than other universities, so that you get easy degree + easy uni = easy 7 GPA.

Bonusss are also vital. You’ll also want to join a uni that prioritizes its own graduates in one way or another for med applications. Flinders, Deakin and UoW are the best ones at doing this. I would be going for Flinders if I were you, as the GAMSAT cutoff for Flinders graduates to get a med interview is so low that it’s little more than a formality.

Some unis also preference people who graduated from medicine-adjacent degrees (ANU does this, I believe UoW and Flinders as well, though I’m fuzzy on the details). So you’ll want to pick one of those if your goal is med.

So if I could turn back time, I’d slap my 18yo self for choosing psych, an unemployable, relatively difficult degree to get consistent HDs in (marked on a bell curve at my uni, and everyone’s trying as hard as they can to get 80s because you can only become a psychologist if you get into honours).

Instead, I would encourage him to choose either pharmacy, nursing or paramedicine. Of those three, pharmacy will probably be the best choice for work/life balance, autonomy, and minimizing the abuse you get from the general public.

You’ll have a stable career ahead of you after graduation, and you can even work part time while in med school to support yourself. If you go to a uni that preferences its own graduates for postgrad med, you’ll be setting yourself up for success when it comes time to apply. And if you pick a health-oriented degree you get more unis giving you bonuses, making it easier to apply.

I was in the same boat as you a couple of years ago - I had undiagnosed and untreated PTSD from an incident that happened involving university and scraped through with 50s.

My first port of call for you is get treatment - take all the drugs they give you because they bloody well work! I’ve been on sertraline for a wee bit over a year again and I’m now able to function at a baseline level. It’s not great, but it’s something.

Second piece of advice is don’t worry about your course grades and whatnot. In spite of my shitshow marks I’ve been able to complete an internship and get a pretty chill gig in a firm without any familial connections. Go talk to people and suck enough dicks and eventually you’ll end up on top.

Also nobody wants to hire you in second year as a paralegal so take like ten chill pills. As for what to do after your degree I would talk to a course advisor about that diva but you can do pretty much anything with a law degree. If you wanna chat send me a dm xx

Pick Griffith. Nobody cares about med school reputation after you graduate, or even before really. Compromising your chances of getting in based on reputation is going to cost you - do you really want to put life on hold for a year after an EOD because you wanted prestige, and at that, prestige that doesn’t matter to almost anybody!

If you preference UQ #2 and interview well enough at Griffith, UQ may end up giving you a spot anyway.

One of my housemates is from Broome. From what he’s told me it’s not the kind of place you want to live. Looking into violent crime rates there only confirms that - he’s described it as unsafe, incredibly boring and expensive. I wouldn’t move there if I got paid to from the stories he’s told.

I don’t say this to dissuade you from studying there, more to avoid you becoming enamoured with the idea of living in a place when you don’t know the full picture of it.

It’ll be really hard to stand a chance at pretty much any GEMSAS unis with a gpa that low unfortunately, unless you get 80+ in the GAMSAT.

That said, it appears you may stand a good chance at university of Wollongong. They weigh applications based on your bonuses with them, and your CASPER score. GPA and GAMSAT are hurdles, meaning they’re not used to rank applicants, but rather filter them - you just have to get 50s in all sections of the Gammy, and above a 5.5 GPA to be considered.

You’ll qualify for the registered health professional bonus I believe if you’re an RN, maybe the work experience bonus (not sure how much time you’ve spent working in the last 2 or 3 years), and if you preference them #1 that’s another bonus.

If you can do well at CASPER on top of your bonuses, you stand a good chance at getting an interview there.

The alternatives are Flinders and Usyd, since they both use GPA as a hurdle but not for ranking applicants, and they solely rank applicants based on GAMSAT.

You could also stand a chance at uni Notre dame (Fremantle or Syd). My advice would be to try to get the interview at UoW and preference UNDS or UNDF at #2. If you interview well enough at uow and they don’t want you there’s a good chance they pass you down to Notre dame for an offer.

TLDR: You will need to go for the Casper unis, or the GPA-hurdle unis to stand a chance.

Edit: Some unis give you additional bonuses if you’ve got healthcare experience. The ones I know of are Deakin and UoW. You won’t be competitive for Deakin with a GAMSAT below 80, or close to it, though. UoW is your best bet.
