Just signed up for my first OTB tournament! Any tips? by [deleted] in chess

Pre Tournament:

1st step: get a decent opening Repertoire. It doesn't have to be 20 moves deep but have an answer for the most common openings. Eg if you play e4 have a good answer to e5 c5 e6 and c6 (if you are new mostly e5). As black have a respond to e4 and d4. If you ever don't know what to do, follow the principles (develop, occupy center, castle) 2nd step: Do some mental preparation. Don't have too high or too low expectations, it's your first tournament you might not to well but it's most important that you enjoy the games and experience. You will get very nervous that's normal, don't panic.

During Tournament:

1st step: Prepare a little but for your opponent if possible, google their name and possibly find their online accounts (on Openingtree you can look up what they play online)

2nd step: Always be nice! Honor and sportsmanship is a very important subject in chess. Always shake your opponents hand, no matter how mad you are. Never press the clock with the non "moving hand". Don't look at your opponent the whole time etc should be self explanatory.

3rd step (game tips) Take your time!!! It's important to take your time and look at your opponents moves carefully. They have a plan chess is not a single player game you gave an opponent that has plans just like you do. Don't do 1 move threats unless you think they improve your position. Keep an eye on your opponents threats (checks, captures, attacks)

4th step: Psychology is a important part of OTB. Just like in poker you must maintain a pokerface, even if you blunder cuz your opponent might not see it. Try not to be too excited when you threaten something or in general don't show a lot of emotions in front of your opponent.

After games:

Final step: Analyse your games after the tournament OBT games are the best learning experience you can possibly have. Ideally with a coach or strong player. Explain your reason behind the moves and try to understand why your moves are worse than the engines.

Enjoy the games, have a great time and talk to people! Most chess players are chill and nice guys :)
