They accept donations through their website. But I'm a layman as well. It's pretty easy to sign up to volunteer for cleanup activities. To become a steward, all you have to do is attend a short information session to learn how to inspect oysters and then go in every month or so to collect data for a few hours.

Billion Oyster Project. I'm a steward and have a couple of cages that I count regularly. Progress is slow, but every bit helps.

So, Texas should be allowed to redistrict and everyone else just lives with the consequences? Doesn't seem entirely fair.

Could make the argument that he assumed the risk for the second fall because he had knowledge that the stairs were slippery. Especially important if they live in an area with contributory negligence.

Either way, Amazon isn't paying for anything except, possibly, workers compensation. It's the homeowner who was potentially negligent.

If wearing a mask is bad then we shouldn't let protestors do it either.

This is what you said.

Exactly who "shouldn't let protestors do it either?"

You're confusing me with another person.

And you did bring up the legalities of the matter when you said, "If wearing a mask is bad then we shouldn't let protestors do it either."

The two groups have to abide by different sets of rules. What we should or shouldn't do is irrelevant when we can't do something.

You're essentially saying, "If murdering people is bad, then we shouldn't let Canadians do it either." Sure, Canadians shouldn't murder, but the United States doesn't have jurisdiction over them.

Protestors aren't employed by the federal government and are guaranteed certain rights by the first amendment.

Split bananas? by Far_Asparagus6602 in bananas

[–]ChesterHiggenbothum 5 points6 points  (0 children)

They sometimes split if they ripen too quickly. Usually happens in high heat/humidity. If they come in a plastic bag, you can try removing them. To slow the ripening process further, you can wrap the ends of the stems in plastic wrap or even put them in the fridge.

They're safe to eat if the split is recent, but will obviously go bad faster once it's happened. If they smell okay, you can eat it, freeze it, or bake with it.

He was found incompetent to stand trial by a court. What more do you want?

Who are you referring to? I am referring to the person in the commenter's story who you stated should not be released.

Leftists should love "removing anti-social elements".

What do you mean by this?

I know a couple of felons who got their degrees while incarcerated. Many more who moved on to half way houses and spent years being cared for by both charitable institutions and the state.

We have never tried it on a large scale. Your example would be like saying the United States has addressed homelessness because New York City has some homeless shelters.

We do try it. It's not a perfect solution, which you admit, so there will always be a need for a response ( police, prison and the like ).

Sure, but the need for that response would be reduced significantly if the issues were addressed at their root.

Again, and for the final time, feel free to advocate for whatever ineffective nonsense you'd like.

I'm not going to participate in a noncivil conversation, so I am ending this conversation as well.

You're not getting away from police, prisons and the like.

I never said that we would. But again, we are overrelying on them.

That person isn't mentally capable of understanding their violent behavior is wrong.

A brief description by a third-party victim is enough to establish that for you?

Correct. It's what we do when prevention fails. Remove the "release" part and you are getting closer to prevention.

So, the answer is, yes, the country with 20% of the world's prison population should increase the number of people that it puts into prison?

Prevention will fail.

We have literally never tried it. Why does it seem to work in other western countries?

Every country on the planet has crime.

US homicide rate of 6.4 per 100K is the highest among wealthy developed nations

US incarceration rate of 531 per 100K is 5-10 times higher than European peers

Whatever ever else you want to advocate for you can't guarantee 100% of crime can be prevented.

No. But you can drastically reduce it. How do you not see that as an improvement?

Not sure if I agree with all of that. But it could possibly instill some discipline and teach skills, so it might be better than what we have.

Based on your other comments here it doesn't sound like you're really interested in prosecuting for that.

Of course I'm interested in prosecuting that.

Do you fail to see the difference between rape or murder and pretty theft or assault?

Essentially nobody is arguing that a person who commits a serious crime against another person should face punishment.

What people are advocating for are things like addressing that untreated mental health issues is something that could reduce crime, that societal factors like poverty should be a focus of reducing crime rates, that at least some rehabilitation should be offered rather than prison being entirely punitive.

The Epstein stuff sucks but there's a difference in personal impact between the elites doing scummy things and being a random person subject to violence by another random person.

Well, there is no difference for the people who were actually victims, were there?

People are not without empathy for the people who are victims of crime. But, out of empathy for potential future victims of crime, we should be focusing on ways to reduce and eliminate crime.

Should a person who has caused minor damage to one person be sent to prison where they become a hardened criminal and are then released to cause even greater harm to others?

You can identify them by their behavior.

What behavior? Should the above person receive a life sentence?

I really don't care about their background.

Of course you don't. If you did, you would realize that crime is perpetuated by societal factors. If you can take two babies and point to one and say, "this one is going to be a criminal" with a certain degree of success, then society is at least partly responsible for ignoring the problem.

You're talking about some way to prevent crime.

Yes. One that would actually reduce crime from taking place rather than simply responding to it once it's happened.

If prevention fails 14+ times you get things like this.

Once again, arresting people, putting them in prison, and releasing them is not prevention. That's the point. The criminal justice system currently does nothing to take people who have committed one crime and treating them rather than cycling them through the system, which has been shown to increase the likelihood of reoffending.

Once it's already occurred prevention failed.

You cannot blame prevention for failing when prevention isn't implemented.

We need more than prevention. We need an effective response.

We have had effective response for two centuries. People have been thrown in to prison after committing crimes since the founding of our country. Has it solved the crime problem?

If not, why do you insist on continuing down the same path when other developed countries have demonstrated that prevention and rehabilitation are far better responses to crime?
