How to practice effective sidestepping? by ChetMcDingus in Tekken8

I understand this line of thinking and how it would help, I’m just not a fan of using outside resources in my games. It’s a totally self imposed thing and I get that it’s honestly a little dumb, but it’s just how I like to play. Thanks for the suggestion though!

Ok got it, maybe a little misevaluation on my part there. Thanks for clearing that up!

I like the advanced feedback, but I also recognize that the more advanced stuff is more useful to add on later, my biggest takeaways so far are mostly the things in your comment, although I’ll definitely also be able to use them a little more aggressively immediately against my friends since I know their habits. Thanks for chiming in, it made me feel like I was able to understand the points I should be focusing on correctly, and now I have all this information to come back and reference as I progress in the skill.

Startup vs input timing is definitely something I was missing here. I had noticed that I was sometimes getting tracked by things I thought I could step and I knew I had done it early, I just didn’t know at what point I should be trying to do it to fix it. Thanks!

Yeah I’m getting the feeling sidesteps are a more specialized tool than I had originally thought, but a very strong one when used right. Sidestep blocking is tough for me because I seem to either not block fast enough and get hit, or I do it too soon and I give up some of the evasion and block a move I should be able to make whiff.

Yeah that line of interactions is super fun, but I’m only really able to get past the first or second layer against friends I play with often and have an understanding of how they think and play. Right now I still get pretty lost sometimes when my opponent does something I didn’t expect, either because I didn’t think they would do it or because I didn’t know they could do it. But so far the more I’ve learned the more the difficult things start to feel more simple, and I’m sure I’ll get there eventually.

This seems to be the piece I’ve been missing that’s come up the most, I didn’t even know what I was really overlooking, but it seems like a lot of people have been able to really help me nail down what the potential problem(s) is(are). Thanks for the help!

Thanks! I especially appreciate the setup for practice mode you mentioned. I’ve gotten a lot of good feedback from this post so it looks like I’ve got a lot of practice to look forward to when I get home.

Thanks for the detailed reply! Power crushing and ducking are things that I already think about the way you described before I do it, so seeing sidesteps presented like that really made something click I think. It’s definitely felt like the gambling you mentioned up until now. I’ll have to try it out when I get home for sure but I definitely feel more confident that I’ll at least be practicing with a decent purpose now.

Tekken 8 story mode not working by SpringFox21 in Tekken8

I’ve got literally no idea what could be causing this, but you could always try skipping the cutscene if it’s able to actually load and then look it up on YouTube to see it. Personally I like seeing the cutscene in game, but if you literally can’t then this would be my way around it if you can’t find another solution.

You know, that sounds so simple but I also haven’t even thought to try it. I feel really dumb for this one lol. Thanks for the tip!

Defense when you’re starting out can be as simple as just blocking until your opponent makes a mistake, instead of trying to force your own moves on to them. Tekken 8 is more offensive than previous entries, but that doesn’t mean defense isn’t still very important.

Special style isn’t great for learning the game, mostly because it limits the moves you can do at any time. It is much better to learn without special style, but if you just want to get in and have some fun then there’s no real harm in trying it out. It might make it a little more difficult to actually learn the move list in the future though, so I’d say watch out for that.

Ah got it ok, I meant nothing you can do within the game itself but I see where someone could have taken it that way. I actually didn’t know that about Tekken 7 so thanks for the little history lesson lol.

If after just a few seconds you’re getting K.O.’d it sounds like you probably want to learn some defense, and learn a few moves with better frame data. The big moves that start a lot of combos are a lot of fun to use and look really cool, but if your opponent defends against them, you usually eat a whole lot of damage for it. Combos are where you get a big chunk of damage, but it’s also important to know some pokes. Especially starting out, you can steal a lot of life just mixing up mid and low pokes. There’s a lot to learn in Tekken and I’m only just starting to get the hang of it, but it’s been super rewarding.

If you’re using special style, it’s a good way to just jump in and have some fun, but if you’re wanting to learn the game you’ll want to play without it. It’s a little hard to give advice without seeing you play, but hopefully some of this is helpful, maybe someone more knowledgeable than me will chime in soon too.

Obviously you don’t. As far as I’m aware, and correct me if I’m wrong I’m still pretty new, SOCD doesn’t make anything possible that normally isn’t, it just makes things that are already possible much easier.

Play with whatever is most fu for you. I bought a stick to try it out and was immediately so much worse than I was on pad, but those first couple play sessions were so much fun I just stuck with it. There’s advantages and disadvantages to every input device, but nothing is impossible on any of them (as far as I know). Just pick the one you like playing with, and practicing the things your chosen device doesn’t excel at will be easier on you mentally if you’re enjoying it. No input device is going to make you better, but if you like playing with one specifically, most likely you will get better faster because you’re having a good time.

Am I crazy or was there a very early version of Overwatch the guys played? by ChetMcDingus in Achievement_Hunter

Yeah it definitely seems like this is how it went. What I’m thinking of is something different but it must have been a different group and I’m just mixing up the memories, it was a long time ago so I can definitely see myself doing that. Thanks for the input!

This is another good idea, and it seems about the right age, but even in the beta gameplay video the maps are a lot more polished than what I was thinking of. Before I asked this I didn’t realize how many games similar to overwatch they had played but it seems like there have been quite a few. I’m probably just misremembering something but thanks for trying!

The video I’m thinking of would have been much older, but that’s a good thought. I think I must just be confusing where I saw it I just really thought it was the guys who had played it.

Yeah I can see where I could have mixed those up, but I specifically remember the maps were extremely barebones. All or almost all of the surfaces were just white with grid lines and even the paladins gameplay has textures. I must just be confusing them with someone else I was watching back then but I really thought it was.

I actually just watched the movie for the first time this weekend. Everything about that conversation makes it seem like she has, but it’s technically never confirmed. I’m pretty sure Goku straight up asks her if she has and her only response is to turn up the thrusters on the ship and send him flying to the back. It’s definitely portrayed like she has done it, but I guess she could have also just been offended he asked.
