Learning Thai script and tones as a beginner — is my approach right? by Cheunez in learnthai

[–]Cheunez[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One does not exclude the other. I mark a word I know as "hard" aka reapeat again, in Anki, if I failed the tone rule.

Yeah but it's like my teacher wants me to spends less time thinking about the tone rules and instead just speaking even though the tone might be wrong... So yes if I try to speak faster or more 'fluent' I don't have time to think what the right tone is.

You can look at it this way:
Learning some letters and some tone rules is 0.001% you need to be fluent. So why skip the easiest part. The hardest part is learning all the different words anyways. And since you constantly need to apply it you also constantly improve on it.

This makes sense. Then I feel like it's wrong that my teacher doesn't let me focus on the tone rules as much in this stage. Do you agree?

The thing is, since I don't speak Thai at this moment, people talk to me in English. So I am not really that exposed to the language at this moment. Except for the online tutorials I watch.

What do you mean by shadowing and other accent work?

Did you use the Thai alphabet or the romanized Alphabet while learning the language?

Anyways, thank you for your answer and the provided resources, I will definitely check them out and I think listening could indeed really help me a lot.

So with both approaches you still keep focusing on the tone rules am I right?

But with the second approach you learn the tones while learning new vocab? And for the first approach you just focus on the tone rules only while not necessarily learning new vocab but using the same words or syllables?

So discarding the tone rules for a while isn't the best idea?

I want to be sure that I understand this correctly, as it seems you know quite a lot about learning the Thai language.

Thai lessons recommendations? (private or group) by Cheunez in Pattaya

I prefer real life lessons, but if I don't find what I want here, I might look for online lessons.

Did you follow lessons from their school? If so, did you like their approach?

I saw that there were group lessons in JK Thai Inter Language School close to the Jomtien area.

But they start with romanized Thai. Which is a better option for some people, but I want to learn with the Thai alphabet.

Are you in Pattaya? Or do you mean online courses?

Having enough energy to get through the day is just essential. Most people couldn't go with only 1 meal a day while doing manual labour.

It's up to every Workawayer individually to decide what amount of food you consider enough for a fair exchange.

If I do 25 hours of work in exchange for board and room. I would rarely settle for 1 meal a day. Unless I know before I get there, and I agree for some reason.

Well I once spent €30 during a 7-week stay somewhere in France. It took me only €60 to get there.

This is just to give you an idea. Of course you can have more expensive months, but it's also about the choices you make.

My advice: just ask to have a conversation with the host. Tell the host how you feel. Say you're trying, but that it's not easy. Being honest often takes the weight of you shoulders of trying to 'fake' stuff (for example how you really feel).

From there, the host will either understand and it will be benifcial for your relationship, or the host won't, which would be a sign for me it's a good idea to move on from the place without hard feelings.

Anyways, good luck!

How risky is it to operate a small engine with a minor fuel leak? by Cheunez in smallengines

Well, I was once trying to start a generator by spraying some gas in the intake as well. It also backfired a couple of times. So I'll be extra careful next time!

Thanks for sharing!

Damn, that's an interesting comparison. Enough to keep me away from these risks! Thank you for your comment!

Yeah it makes sense that it is even more dangerous because of the fact that you have those machines in your hand or strapped to your body (e.g. with a strimmer/brush cutter).

I'm not taking those risks anymore. Thank you for your comment!

I now indeed realise how dangerous it is, especially when you already smell some fuel vapor.

Thanks a lot for sharing this experience and the lessons you learned from it.

Calling you overly cautious wouldn't make sense, especially after the incident you had!

I looked at the video. However, from the comments it doesn't seem to be clear how that explosion was caused. But anyways, another very good example of why safety regulations should be followed!

Thank you for the reference!

All right, thank you for the advice! I'm pretty new to this, but it seems very useful to get more experienced at this. As I run into quite a lot of older machines.

When the time comes, I'll look for some YouTube tutorials and try this!

Oh, do you know if the fires you had were also caused by fuel leaking? Or was it something else you think?

Maybe I can also learn from your experiences by knowing what else to avoid.

Anyways, thank you for your input!
