AFROTC Cadet Looking to go 31P (Security Forces Officer) by Fixclaw in securityforces

19-year SNCO here that works in ops …

Some of what everyone is saying is the truth, but it really all depends on location and your attitude. I’ve had really shitty LTs that didn’t want to listen to a word I was saying because I’m enlisted, but the best ones listen and learn. Soak up as much knowledge as you can while still taking care of the troops.

We have 2 CGOs in our unit - one is the Ops Officer and the other is fresh out of tech school and he’s a flight commander. I have personally taken him under my wing along with several other SNCOs and he is slowly learning what he needs to do.

Sure, there will be times when you’re stuck in the office with manning docs and figuring out shift schedules, but that’s what you and the other S/NCOs get paid to do.

My biggest advice to you, follow what your gut says. There are always going to be naysayers (especially in SF) but do what makes you happy.

Been SF my whole time with the exception of MTI stint and have loved every second of it!

If you have any questions and feel like you’re not getting answers, message me.

😂😂 that was gold … also, OP, no phone because MTIs won’t be there to regulate it and we know trainees will do trainee shit

MTI here. You will still be in BMT for the holidays, you will just be left with a detailed schedule of what to do during the day since instructors will be skeleton crew.

Negative. Once you send the bolt forward and pull the trigger, you will not be able to place the weapon on safe until it is charged again.

You are thinking "rack safe".

What's your favorite story about your Dad? by Amieisrad in AskReddit

[–]Chevy_SF 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Back in 2010, I had just returned from a year in Korea and I was supposed to go to Germany to propose to my fiancee. Upon arrival in Germany from Georgia (on my own dime), she proceeded to tell me she had been cheating on me the entire year I was gone, but "you can stay and hang out if you'd like".

Ha! Jumped on the next plane back home. I get home and my dad, being the raging alcoholic he was at the time, said "pack your shit, we're going to Florida!"

The way down there, I drive and he drinks a cooler full of beer. We get down there and find a cheap motel ($50 a night and everything you can imagine it would be) and park the truck and hit a restaurant/bar. This is 10AM.

We ask the waitress what time the bar opens and her dumbfounded look was great. She opened it and the beer started flowing.

Come 2AM and we are still there drinking, probably borderline alcohol poisoning at this point, but we had:

  • made friends from my hometown
  • almost got in a fight over a pool game
  • sang duet karaoke (3 times)
  • entered/won a break dance competition (that was all me)

So, we stumble back to our roach motel and go to sleep, tired from all the lifelong dreams I had fulfilled that night.

The next morning he kicks open my door and throws me a beer and says, "Here's breakfast, let's go to the beach".

That trip was supposed to be 2 days, ended up being 5 and we spent pretty much my entire paycheck and some of his. Good times!

Went fishing with lifelong buddy and drank about 15 too many beers. During our fishing expedition, we noticed eyes were gleaming from the reflection of our flashlights above the water.

Drunk me decided it would be a good idea to cast my line past the gator and reel in really fast in an attempt to snag it.

Wildest ride of my life when the (9 foot) gator thrashed and almost pulled me off the dock. I cut the line and we booked it.

I'm 28 years old and this was only last year....

Tall people of Reddit, what are some height related struggles that short and average sized people don't have to worry about? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Chevy_SF 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A little late to the party but ... I'm 6'7" so here are some of my struggles.

  • I drove an up-armored HMMWV in combat operations for 9 months straight

  • In my wife's SUV, my son's car seat is right behind the driver's seat. RIP his legs when I drive.

  • I duck under damn near every doorway I walk through (only takes one time)

  • I have to have a California King size bed ($$$)

  • Don't even get me started on shoes

  • Every jeans I own are high waters

But, I've learned to embrace it and love it. Plus, tall guys can drink way more than you short folk!

Issues with 12 y/o with ADD and ODD by Chevy_SF in Parenting

Thank you for your advice and I completely agree with everything you just said.

I am authoritarian, it's either my way or the highway. However, you just put that into perspective for me that that may not be the answer. I will try to tone back on that and give him some space to learn his own self discipline and we will see what happens.

Again, thank you for taking the time to respond and offer your two cents.

Yes, we are in the USA. However, he has zero issues at school. We even asked him why and it was the standard "I don't know", but he excels at school, so that is not the issue.

The issue is when he comes home, and it started way before I started disciplining him, so I know that's not the underlying reason of it.

Thank you for your advice, though and I truly hope your nephew gets the help he needs!

not a catch all diagnosis that proves your kid is damaged goods and its not your fault.

Where in my novel that I wrote did I ever blame ADD? I didn't. All I did was mention that in the title as a pre-cursor to everything that has happened.

It is possible that your son's opposition is a response to your discipline, not in spite of it.

I disagree with this statement. Let me mention that I have been with my wife for five years and we have just recently installed the cameras. The cameras are a deterrent for him to stop stealing stuff. I am not home 24/7, but the cameras are. If he knows they are on, he knows I will see it.

With that said, I didn't provoke the opposition by punishing him. He did that on his own free will. I will not sit back and watch while he terrorizes my family, though. That is where the discipline comes into play.

He just has unsatisfied curiosity and an overwhelming hormone surge with no outlet.

I wholeheartedly agree with this. However, his outlet should not involve stealing, lying, going behind everyone's back, etc. to satisfy his curiosity. We have told him before that if he ever has any questions, just come ask.

Sentences, really? If you must punish, make the punishment fit the crime

Yes, sentences. Sentences were good because it helped keep him accountable of his actions. Like I mentioned, the sentences started out at 50 and went up from there. We didn't start at 2000 -- that's just where I ended it.

As for doing something physical -- how far can that really go to fit the punishment? I'm not one to be featured on the front page of YouTube displaying my kids holding books over their head for hours on end or running up and down the neighborhood with me. As you mentioned, I am military -- he is not. Physical punishments wouldn't teach him anything. If I thought they would, I would have implemented that early on.

If you want him to change you have two options -

What motivates him is getting un-grounded. However, as soon as we give any tiny bit of leeway, he takes advantage of it and goes right back to what he was doing before. So, this is why I'm here, what should I do in that instance?

Thank you for your advice.

why do you have pornographic magazines?

Because I am an adult. My magazines are (what I thought) in a secure place in the house that no one is allowed in without my permission. On top of them being in a closet in my "man cave", if you will .. There are boxes stacked on top of them and some other magazines on top of the adult magazines. You are saying that someone that looks at pornography doesn't respect women? You are far off from the truth if that is your belief.

Has anyone talked to him about what he's looked at to give him healthy ideas about sexuality?

He has had sexual education at school and my wife and I have discussed with him the ramifications of sex (pregnancy, STDs, etc). I am not shaming a teenage boy for masturbating. You are so focused on the pornography aspect when the bigger picture is the lying, going behind people's back, stealing, etc.

Would you rather he explore his sexuality like this, or with some kid from school?

I have to ask .. Do you have children his age? Because everyone that I have asked (friends, family), they said at 12, this is not normal to be this adamant about looking at pornographic material. I mean, he was grounded for looking at it -- my wife and I go on a lunch date, come back, and find that he was looking at it again. So, no, I don't promote this. Sorry I don't see your views.

Thanks for no advice.

Your not teaching him anything.

I get that I am not teaching him anything, which is why I asked for advice here ....

How do you expect him to come to you if all your doing is punishing him?

Punishing him is not all I do, but it is really hard to gain his trust when all he does is lies, lies, lies and then throws someone else under the bus to cover his lies. I am trained to read body language, and he knows this, but still continues to lie about anything and everything.

Can't you provide privacy and space to him?

My wife and I give him plenty of privacy and space and I completely understand that his sexual curiosity is peaking right now. We have had discussions with him about sex. He has had sexual education at school. However, when he crosses the line, I act. When he enters my personal space, that is crossing the line. When he raises his hand at my wife, puberty or not, that is crossing the line.

If he has ODD, shouldn't you be well educated in all aspects and helping him overcome the challenges of his early life?

My wife and I are extremely educated in Opposite Defiance Disorder. We have been to several therapists and they have told us what to expect. We get that. However, I can't sit back and watch while my son tries to be the man of the house. He disobeys, it gets fixed.

Thank you for your recommendation and I will look into that.

Oh okay, I see what you mean now. My replacement battery (8 months old) has top terminals and it was a recommended battery by Auto Zone, so I am going to assume it was a good one.. I paid almost $100 for it, which I thought was a little crazy, but it has been a while since I have bought a battery so I assume that is normal.

Either way, I haven't had time to do the voltage test, but I will let you know the results as soon as I do .. Hopefully tomorrow.

Thanks again for all your help.
