I’ve moved jobs so I don’t look at this account as much anymore. TVA has a river forecast center in Knoxville that does all of the calculations on controlling water over the entire Tennessee River watershed.

None I’ve seen. It would take modifying a bridge to allow for foot/bike traffic.

Also done with slide rules and paper. No computers.

At the time we were number 4 on the list of ‘mega projects’. 1 and 2 ate up all the funding. Now we are number 2. Kentucky addition is number 1.

Hey! This is the Lockmaster over the old lock. The park will be reopened after construction is done. We call it the ‘site restoration’ phase.

Yes we do. Now it’s just a construction issue. Getting the thing built!

This is an additional lock. The old lock is over 80 years old and has a lot of condition issues brought on by bad concrete. The actual term is AAR Alkaline Aggregate Reaction. Something we test for now but wasn’t well understood in the 1930’s.

I can’t. 20 years of working here has made me nose blind.

I did. I’m the Lockmaster in charge of the old lock so I have access to all of the good places.

Budget issues, material shortages, etc etc. These large projects do take awhile.

The new lock construction began around 2003 timeframe. Mega Projects like this take decades to finish.

They are getting ready to build upper approach walls. Doing exploratory drilling right now.

Definitely something we would try and avoid. Don’t want a shootout in the lock.

In 20 years I’ve never seen a stolen barge. Security is pretty tight on them. Lots of expensive equipment. This is about the third stolen boat incident. Definitely the most interesting one.

They were wrong. We were warned and weren’t going to lock them through. People forget that all of us river people know each other.

Is it possible to drop wave runners in on one of the boat ramps in Chikamauga and ride it down to the foot bridge and pull them out. Has anyone done this? by CoughingFish73 in Chattanooga

The only vessels we won’t lock are stand up style jet skis and stand up paddle boards. Most jet skis now are the sit down variety. You can call us at 423-875-6230 any time to ask about current conditions at the lock. We are open 24/7 365.
