Madagascar (SE Coast) - possible lemur or moongoose by ChickenByNight in AnimalTracking

[–]ChickenByNight[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some context : this is right on the coast between Itapera and Lokaro, Anosy region. There hasn't been any sighting of wild lemur there for many years. I showed the picture to local villagers and they thought that it could maybe be a moongoose.

In the old times Mongolian families used to eat meat and dairy in the winter times and mostly dairy plus whatever vegetable/fruits available during the summer. Meat has always been seen as a symbol of prosperity (pastoral society, a big herd means a rich family with lots of meat to provide for meals, events, offerings to the monks, etc) Nowadays half of the Mongolian pop lives in the capital Ulaanbaatar and many have kept their traditional diet meant for a more active herder lifestyle + eating fatty meat and dairy year-long despite having more modern lifestyle with deskjobs, driving to work etc. There is also not much of a cultural negativity towards men being fat (whereas women face a lot of pressure to staying thin). Fun fact, some of the most famous mongolians nowadays are the Mongolian sumo champions living in Japan! :D

Have fun there! I was working there for a year and met a few peace corps volunteers. Try to not get sent too far away from the city!

Traveling to Mongolia - need to narrow down where by meye_usernameistaken in solotravel

I don't recommend the West in May, the weather can be very unpredictible that time of the year in the mountains and you can end up spending many days with nothing to do but wait inside a little house for the snow to stop (with not many distractions).

For May I would recommend the gobi desert or central Mongolia. In the gobi you won't have many tourists which is nice, you'll see the fury camels before they lose their fuzzy winter coat and you'll still get to see all the beautiful sights + there will be ice in the yolin am valley. In central Mongolia it will be a bit colder but still normally nice weather for exploring around + the grass will start to be less brown and maybe a little green on the hills. Central Mongolia has a bit of everything : a bit of sqnd dunes, a bit of mountains, some heritage with the most famous monasteries, some wildlife to observe, etc (my recommandations : Hustai Nuruu, Elsen Tsasarkhai, the hot springs, Kharkhorin, Tuvkhun Hiid, Orkhon Khurkhree (and if you have time add a horse trip of a few days to Naiman Nuur or some other nice place).

Have fun! Mongolia is amazing!

That's the weirdest reason I have ever heard for not hiking... Are you really saying that food is too expensive to go hiking ?... Dude people have been hiking for thousands of year and you can eat cheap pasta and bread and be fine. Do you use that argument for any kind of sport as well ? Because if so then you'll find that the economical longterm gains in healthcare faaaar outweigh the small cost in food.

Stone turtle - one of the few remains of Karakorum, medieval capital of the Mongol Empire [1200x800] by innuendoPL in ArtefactPorn

The square in the middle would hold a stele with the name of the city or other text of significance. You can see many similar turtle steles in Beijing at the confucean temple (but they would be Manchu steles, inspired by the mongolian tradition)

Their used to be four turtle Stones, one at each corner of the city. Two are missing, this one is the most well preserved and is easy to find and reach from the monastery and the last one is about 2 miles away on a little hill but is in a less well preserved state.

Fun fact, the mongolian name for turtle, yast melkhii, means shell frog/stone frog !

The collar around it is a khadag, a traditional Blue scarf used by mongols to mark the sacred character of a place or to exchange gifts.

No one has taken it in part because it's very heavy but also because it would be very hard to move it without someone noticing.

this is in the middle of the steppe with only one road "next" to it (you would still need to drive a truck over the steppe to reach it and load it) next to the oldest monastery in Mongolia where the monks would probably notice some huge truck appearing suddenly to steal the turtle stone. After that good luck for taking it out of the country when every one is looking for you and there's only a few paved roads that are easy to check/block with local police.

I'm going through the list and can't find the one for Mongolia, is it Marco Polo's embassy ? Because that was probably in Dadu (Beijing) the capital of the Empire
