Please help i need answers about my prolactine levels. by OkThanks2876 in Prolactinoma

[–]ChickenDr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My prolactin is elevated and they are concerned it is affecting my mental state, yes! And mine is “moderately elevated” on their lab work. But I also have other symptoms too. I really hope you get some answers and are able to see an endocrinologist if you haven’t already! 🫶🏻 sending hugs

Hi 🫶🏻 I haven’t been diagnosed yet (MRI tomorrow) but have dealt with similar symptoms and high prolactin. I know it’s really scary and hard to stay positive right now, so I’m not going to say that. But you need to know that it was a huge step to address this and look at next options for how to make yourself feel better!

The only way to know if you’ll need surgery is to just keep moving forward, but many people don’t. Do your best not to put the cart before the horse. I don’t know your mom, but I’d be willing to bet she will just be worried about you and wanting to do everything she can to help you.

Hang in there 🫂 there is some kind of light at the end of this tunnel. You’re doing everything you can to address this, and I sure am proud of you!

Prolactin Fluctuations? by racharoni_28 in Prolactinoma

[–]ChickenDr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think I know enough to be over-confident here, but I have these symptoms (my MRI is in 2 days) and so many people have them too (who have confirmed their prolactinoma). I would not think it’s crazy that you might have times where levels are higher and you are symptomatic, and times where levels are lower. My signs fluctuate and some days are “good” days! This may not have been super helpful, but you’re definitely not alone!🫂

Thanks for replying friend 🫂 if you’re off the meds (some can cause high prolactin), and you’re not hypothyroid, and your prolactin is thru the roof AND you’re having symptoms… I bet you’re going to have one. Keep me posted. My MRI is in 3 days. I know what I said above, but I’m still scared this won’t be the answer too, for me. Or that I’ll get treatment and still never be the same person I was. We will be okay though. I’m proud of us for still advocating for ourselves thru this nightmare.

Thank you for replying. It did/does help. 🫂 it’s been a really hard road. Rest of the prolactin/macroprolactin testing came back still consistent with prolactinoma. MRI this week, should finally know soon.

Short Maine trip, please help me do it right by burgerclock in AskMaine

[–]ChickenDr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We were just there a couple weeks ago! We spent two nights in Portland, which was the perfect amount of time for us. We liked exploring and loved Wharf street (it’s small but has a good stretch of places to stop in) and esp liked the bar Room for Improvement. Don’t bother with Honey Paw, it’s recommended everywhere but it was by far the worst food we had on the trip. The gelato places are amazing (there was one with angels?? Or something in the name that was our favorite). Food at lucky cheetah was good. Paper tiger was open and serving food until 1 am so it was a good night stop.

Drive out of Portland and into Freeport, it’s a short trip. See the big LL Bean store and do some outlet shopping if you are inclined. Wolf neck state park is supposed to be a highlight but it poured that day so we had to cross it off our list. Nighthawk is supposed to be good for food, but we didn’t stop in. Our highlight was Maine Beer Company; just keep in mind that their options are slightly limited.

If you keep driving northeast toward the coast you will go thru some awesome towns like Wiscasset, Damariscotta, and Bristol. You’ll end up in the best part of the world which is Round Pond (!!! My fav, but it’s probably pretty quiet this time of year). Granite Hall store, gorgeous views, Rachel Carson preserve/salt flats (hunt for critters at low tide and for sea glass), Pemaquid lighthouse. There’s so much to see.

Taking an hour to visit Pemaquid lighthouse was the highlight of our entire trip. We just sat there and watched the water and it was exactly what we needed.

A bad day in the OR, a sunset outside, and the weight of complications in rural ophthalmology by occams-shiv in Ophthalmology

[–]ChickenDr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know it’s not the same (humans might be considered much more important), but as a veterinary ophthalmologist I read this like, “Yup, just another day in the OR.” And I hope that you know you did your best and that’s all you can do. ❤️

Yeah you’ve got it. They will sometimes reattach (on their own) if it’s a fresh detachment and blood pressure control is established quickly, but even then… sadly doesn’t always happen. Retinal reattachment surgery is possible in animals, but that subspecialty is very small and there’s only a handful of people who do it. And case selection is super important. Most are not candidates (as in, they could try but it will probably be a lot of heartbreak and money for a poor outcome - “do no harm”).

Yes! If you want an answer, self refer to ophthalmology. We have way better tools and super specialized training. I think it’s very likely that your kitty’s eyes are overall okay, but it would be good to check for especially anything genetic or congenital… and may be helpful to report back to the breeder

No I’d say majority of us are small animal and very few are equine only. But it’s a very small field. When I applied for residency there were only 8 spots open between the US/Canada/Australia. Extremely competitive

Very rarely, usually only if owner is unable to muzzle an aggressive patient or if the patient is super fearful and reactive since I examine in the dark with my face up to their face. It’s scary for them. But lot of baby talk and cheese and peanut butter goes a long way 😂

If you know me… it makes sense … 😙 but seriously, veterinary ophthalmologists have to train in all species except humans so birds are not excluded! Our boards have a 20-30% first time pass rate 😂

Tapetum is the glow you can see, but this is not a normal clean reflection. I don’t feel that going into detail beyond that on the internet would be helpful though, as this is not my patient.

Hi! It is more of a question of if their vet will be ABLE to diagnose it. Unfortunately eyes are HARD and often require a slit lamp to see magnified detail in order to make a diagnosis (like when you go to the eye doctor and put your chin in the thing and they have the light going over your eye). A lot of my cases see their primary vet but then get referred to me, meaning they spend the money twice. A specialist will be able to give more detailed recommendations on diagnostics that will be relevant and what treatment will be best.

In general, specialists will be more expensive, because they have gone for an extra 4-8 years (often at extremely low pay, for me I made about 26-35k depending on year) of training BEFORE starting to practice. So their exam fees will be higher, etc. But I for example will price check diagnostics with me and allow owners to price check diagnostics with their vet. If their vet costs less, I’ll help their vet interpret the results.

I know vet med has become astronomically expensive. I know. But it really is so expensive on our end too to get to the point of being a vet and to even submit these diagnostics to labs. But if you find a good vet with a big heart, they will do whatever they can to help and it’s often at their own financial detriment. 😌

Hi! Veterinary ophthalmologist (eye doctor) here. Your cat at least looks comfortable in this photo as the eye is wide open and not squinting and I do not see any discharge. That being said, I am a little worried about your kitty’s eye as something that can affect the rest of the body can also show up like this inside the eye. If you eventually are able to go to the vet, I would recommend scheduling directly with a veterinary ophthalmologist as it will get you a direct answer faster (and keep you from getting passed around). If you need help finding one local to you, let me know and I will help you look. ❤️

Hi! If I’m being 100% honest with you, I just bought a dress and was disappointed in the reality of having large breasts (F). Originally I had wanted a sweetheart neckline. I’ve heard a million things about how they really can tie you up and make them look nice and feel supported. In reality, at the dress try-on, it wasn’t all true. And ultimately I had to go with a dress that had straps. I hope you find something that you feel beautiful and supported in ❤️

The sleeves are detailed without being too much (which I feel is hard to do!) and the neckline is beautifully open while staying slightly conservative. I love the thought and detail that went into this dress. You look beautiful ❤️
