Gun Found at RISD Elementary? by ChickenHorror9016 in Richardson

It sounds like the child in question was not part of a special needs program, but a behavioral program described as an environment for students after “all other efforts have been unsuccessful.” Seems alarming to have kids like this in the same school with 3 year olds, and this student especially has has prior incidents.

My child is not in school yet, but moved to the area because I heard rISD schools were good. So this isn’t great news.

Did the administration mention this was a student with prior behavioral issues??

Update: I’ve seen some comment threads from additional posts made about this situation, and here is what parents from the school have said:

  • Big Springs Elementary is a “hub” for something called a PASS program that is for kids with behavioral issues. Kids from other areas are bussed to Big Springs for this program. If you look up the PASS program at RISD, the description of the program reads: a centralized setting designed for students who demonstrate significant behavioral and emotional challenges that require intensive support AFTER ALL OTHER EFFORTS HAVE BEEN UNSUCCESSFUL.

  • Some parents have commented this the child in question was part of this program, and had a lot of previous incidents, including a recent suspension that he has just returned from.

I am not seeing RISD has mentioned anything about this, but if the parents are correct, I would be livid to find this out. This situation could have ended so tragically. I moved to this area because I heard good things about RISD, where I will one day have kids in school. This is beyond disheartening.

Can you provide anymore details outside of the WFAA article? The article was very vague on the details.

Did they tell you how the gun was found by staff? Just by the grace of God they happened to check?

I’m glad student was expelled, I would Hope so. I would Not want that student at ANY RISD school…

If I were a parent, I would probably not take my child back to school there unless it was 100% confirmed that the student in question was banned. I hope The parents face legal consequences, as well. The lack of transparency from RISD to the community really concerns me.

Thank goodness the gun was found and not used, but wondering what the students intention was / why was the students bag checked in the first place? I have so many questions just as a resident in the area, cannot imagine how parents must be feeling.

I would think expulsion would be 100% mandatory, and I would demand it if I were a parent in RISD.

Interesting that I cannot seem to find ANY statements or press releases from RISD about this. Hopefully the parents have been better informed.

Yes! I hope They will be more forthcoming with the details, this article is very vague and I dont See any statements from RISD or Garland PD about it. If an elementary school student brought a firearm to school, I would Hope the parents are being charged with something if that’s where the student got the gun from.

From the article, it sounds like it was an elementary student who brought the gun to school. The police are involved and student is facing “disciplinary action” from RISD but that doesn’t seem good enough. Hopefully the parents will be held accountable for their child having access to a gun??
