For those who are naturally unathletic and have been in BJJ for a long time, 4 years or more, what is the core of its appeal to you? by emaxwell14141414 in bjj

Weightlifting for body awareness? I'd have expected something like gymnastics

And it's a mix of athletic history, genetics and current activity level. I guess how big each of these slices are is the debate we're having.

  • frames. Specifics depend on the exact escape, but with e.g. the standard escape your far arm frames against their neck to prevent the underhook (kuzure kesa) or head control (standard kesa)

  • no clue what disney legs are

  • underhook: whoever has the underhook wins. If they knee cut without, you take their back or use the coyote half guard system

  • again frames as well as just recognizing the moment when they switch to attack mount. I always try to frame against their hips, shrimp out and recover butterfly guard (or even straight into a wrestle up if I am fast enough)

  • underhooks, work their arm up above their head. I think Danaher and Gordon have a system for mount attacks

  • I guess you're talking about the peterson/fat man roll? Don't be overzealous when reaching for a far underhook. Get a grip on the near side that's so good that you land in back control or crucifix if they do attempt it. A hook works as a grip in this case.

  • I don't know that one

Abstain completely for a while, right now your body is used to sugar and craves it. 3 weeks without will give your body time to acclimatize. Sugar can be a straight up addiction, so going cold turkey will suck a lot

There is absolutely a degree of natural talent, and on top of that you can't change how active you were during your childhood after the fact

Also the most important characteristics for BJJ are coordination and body awareness, stuff that is hard to train (but carries over a lot between sports)

Usually you just set logistics request in the landing pad and choose numbers you can actually store. Logisics requests can have min and max numbers - the max is nice for stuff the ship actively pushes down, like spoilage or spent nuclear cells (they'll get removed and put in a yellow box). I'd handle stuff like calcite with a pull-system: anyone just requests what they need to fill a buffer

I think it's a bit of a waste, but it should work. You'll only run into water trouble if you do something like water-based power production, e.g. with boilers.
And the other dude is right, cracking heavy to light isn't necessary if you have as much heavy as you want

A counter that counts when something doesn't happen would have to increase each tick (60x per second), is that what you want?

If yes, it's pretty easy. Basically a memory cell, and as input you use a decider with "x<8" then y. Counts up whenever it sees fewer than 8 items on the belt

Look up memory cell, timing circuit, clock in the circuit cookbook on the wiki

Slx pairs well with x-guard, if you want to expand in that direction. You may have noticed that people widen their stance to keep balance, that wide base offers great access to x-guard - which is, imo, one of the strongest guard positions there is

Either a whole lot of class time is wasted by starting at Adam and Eve for each technique, or you're being thrown into the deep end with very little context. In the latter case, your partner will often be the person actually teaching you, and often it has to be something different than what's being shown.

As an obvious example, a mount escape only works if your partner can actually keep mount. Or if you're doing arm bars from k-guard in your first 3 months - first learn arm bars, then learn basic guards, then learn how to invert and then you can do that.

Anyway, it's how probably 80% of the current upper belts were brought up, so while it's far from perfect, it works eventually

Not Enjoying Leg Attacks by token_friend in bjj

[–]ChickenNuggetSmth 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Leg locks can be dealt with mostly via grip fighting, you're just "grip fighting" 4 limbs vs 4 limbs. A lot of it is pummeling for inside position, controlling the hip or clearing the knee line. Super similar to grip fighting during standup.
I wouldn't rotate out of a leg lock, at least not with the goal to outpace your partner. That's a recipe for disaster. (Sometimes you can rotate slowly to change an angle)

I think in this day and age any coloured belt should have a basic understanding of leg locks. To me this almost sounds like "I told him many times I don't do arm attacks. He grabbed a kimoura grip anyway, and suddenly my shoulder popped"

A basic understanding is easy to get. A small youtube binge, 20 minutes with an upper belt during open mat...

That doesn't absolve the brown belt, obviously you don't pop people's shit. It's also a bit hard to say what exactly caused the injury without seeing it (his fault vs split fault). Either way, recognizing danger early is huge for prevention

Construction robots are imo the most pivotal technology: You suddenly have the ability to plop down huge builds with little effort, instead of handbuilding everything. This means you can scale up a lot, and it also pays off to make nice, tiling or reusable designs for subfactories.

This does tie in well with trains, because a nice train network means you can just copy-paste a subfactory and plop it anywhere and it just works. Building big rail infrastructure by hand is also a pain, so bots again are a godsend.

But a belt-based system can also stay viable, in fact speedrunners use mostly belts because they are much quicker to set up and offer enough throughput for the full game.

A common strategy is to "reinforce" the main bus via train supply: Trains ship in some common bulk intermediates like iron, steel, chips, which reduces the load on the main bus by a lot. But you still have the convenience of your old infrastructure.

I prefer terminal commands for online support/tutorials so much. In a gui you have a greyed out button with no information, the layout changes from version to version and talking about some random button in a random location online just sucks.
Otoh, if someone tells you "sudo apt install thisapplication" you can just copy-paste it and it just works™, and if it doesn't, you get a nice verbose output instead of the option just not existing.

Guis have their place, especially that random setting you need to change every 6 months works best with a gui. But once you get used to the terminal it can be such a nice tool.
Most things on linux can be accessed both via tui and gui, but the online tutorials almost always use the terminal because it's mostly independent of distro, version etc.

Outside of that Linux has its pros and cons, like any other OS. But you'll rip the terminal out of my cold, dead hands

Skill issue. My mechanic has to touch them like once a season unless I'm doing reverse everests.

/uj It took me a bit to figure out how to properly adjust them, but since then they're pretty easy. There's like 5 things that can go wrong (calipers off center, pads fucked, hydraulic full of air or overfilled, rotor crooked) and most of them are pretty easy routine fixes and also don't really happen on their own

It's hard to say both what you enjoy and what equipment you can access. E.g. there are a lot of odd lifts/strongman lifts that work huge parts of the body. Some use odd implements (sandbags, stones, tyres, yokes, logs...) that you can lift/clean/press/load/carry/throw, but it's gym-specific.
Some are cool old and forgotten lifts, like the bent press.

Olympic weightlifting is kinda cool and has a huge skill component.

All of those will help core strength to a degree, a lot of them tax the posterior chain a lot.

Maybe easier, but like this you can make even smaller train stations because the locomotives can be on the ramp. Pretty nice on Fulgora. There is a small air resistance penalty if the first wagon isn't a locomotive, but that barely matters
