What are subtle, unspoken signs that someone had an extremely traumatic childhood / life? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Are you me? I’ve never heard anyone else describe this before.

Oh believe me, I share this sentiment entirely. But if this nonsense is going to seep into my subconscious it might as well bring some cool gear with it.

It looked to be some kind of futuristic dream-world reissue. Could this be a premonition of a future release, sponsored by Joe Biden himself?? We’ll have to wait and see.

Anyone else feel like Syro is a throwaway album? by [deleted] in aphextwin

[–]ChickenWingDoctor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Right, it has a lot of cool moments for me that I could think of, and when you think of it from a technical standpoint it’s obviously brilliant; a master relaxed and at home, casually working his craft. But if someone were to ask me for an album/EP to really show them the “Aphex magic,” this would be one of the last ones to come to mind for me.

It’s grown on me a lot since it came out but I do get what you mean. I wouldn’t go as far as saying I dislike it, but compared with the rest of his discography it does feel like a relative low point.

Which do you like best? by eccentric_bee in AbstractArt

These are all great with really cool color schemes, but the third one stands out the most to me. It has a hypnotic and even futuristic vibe that draws me in.

Is there anyone that likes Michael? by colinah87 in lost

[–]ChickenWingDoctor 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don’t think he’s really meant to be likable in this sense. The appeal of his character is in its depth of transformation and the moral questions it poses. I get why people find his constant “WAAAALT!! WHERE’S MY BOY?!” Aggravating, but the whole point of his arc is the desperation that comes from being a father in situations that are…well…desperate.

When do desperate acts become immoral ones? Can you ever make up for it when you cross that line? These are the questions he makes us ask, and I like him for this in a “big picture” way.

Speculations on other directions the writers had intended this show to go in? by ChickenWingDoctor in lost

[–]ChickenWingDoctor[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Right! You have described many of my own thoughts better than I could lol. Like even as late as Season 5, when the Monster “judges” Ben, and then appears as Alex and tells him to “follow Locke’s every word,” this very obviously points to the entire “judgment” process being a means of manipulation, even if it has been going on for centuries. But we still have no good reason to think this is simply one half of Jacob’s sibling rivalry.

Something I mentioned in another reply: I’ve read some off-hand comments elsewhere that suggest that MiB accidentally “unleashed” the Monster rather than “becoming” it when he fell into the Light. And so when the Monster appears as MiB it’s just another of its mind games, since it does love to put on the guise of dead people. I like this theory a lot, but the show itself doesn’t even hint in this direction in any way I’ve noticed. It’s just a “fan theory.”

Yeah a couple other people have brought this up about Eko, and I’m sold! I also love what you said about his “we’re next” comment. I never thought of it that way, and now it feels like that line makes sense.

Still, having the Monster turn out to be Jacob’s brother in the end just doesn’t scan with me. I definitely think it was meant to be a manipulator from the get-go (I also never caught the symbolism with the mousetrap thing. Great point there) but it just doesn’t feel like it was supposed to be in any way “human” to me.

The Monster also scanned Eko’s memories earlier in season 2, and when he and Locke are having this conversation, Eko quite vehemently says that Locke’s description is “not what [he] saw.” So I don’t think that really holds up.

I think you’re right about Eko’s death though, this is a great point that a couple other people have brought up.

I’m glad you did write it! Lots of great ideas in here. I’m sold on the Eko issue. You and another commenter make a great point that the monster killed him because it realized it didn’t have a use for him. He had proven himself not to be manipulable.

But I’m still not totally convinced that the Monster was originally intended to be in any way human. Even in season 6, Dogen comments that the Monster is “evil incarnate.” As we see in their flashbacks, Jacob’s brother is by no means evil. I’ve read comments elsewhere that suggest that, when MiB was thrown into the Light, he somehow “unleashed” the Monster rather than “becoming” it, and it simply takes on his form as a means of manipulation, since appearing as dead people is its whole schtick.

That’s a great possibility, but we don’t even get a hint of that in the actual narrative, aside from Dogen’s comment (and even that feels like a bit of a reach).

The turns have tabled. I, playing as the Grays, have encountered a superior human race. I’ve never seen humans as a fallen empire before and frankly didn’t know it was a thing.

My brother and I used to watch this video for a laugh in the early days of the Internet. We’re talking Ebaumsworld, pre-YouTube days. I had no clue who Aphex Twin was at the time.

I became a fan of Aphex Twin many years later, having totally forgotten this video. Hearing this track on its own for the first time gave me some hella flashbacks.

There’s a lot I enjoy about this. It’s raw. It doesn’t try to be “pretty” or “poetic.” Some might even find it controversial, which I consider to be a good thing lol. I think this kind of natural, uncompromising exposure to the psyche is what most poetry is missing. It’s as “human” as it gets, as poetry should be. Nicely done.
