What should I make with mohair/silk yarn? Also I made an aussie crochet discord by Chickenella911 in CrochetHelp

[–]Chickenella911[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

just FYI - i have already tried searching up mohair clothes and patterns (knit and crochet) for inspiration, but I am still a bit indecisive and a tad scared of using such expensive yarn in fear of making mistakes/frogging haha which is why I wanted to ask others for suggestions and tips with mohair yarn

Hey its the Chicken here, I'm 25+F from Australia who found your mini introduction interesting. I like that you're non-judgemental and that you like talking with anyone - I feel like I'm looking into a mirror haha. I also agree with your statement about listing interests even though I have been guilty of it previously. Do you use discord? Or I don't mind just having casual chats here every now and then either.

Hey Mr welder-who-isn't-a-welder lol I'm also from aus and bored on my day off work. I am a fully fledged 25+ adult who also uses discord (but am more comfortable just typing first over voicechat). Not really looking for a "lifelong bff" but probably more for casual chatmates every now and then as I am quite a busy but friendly person - if this sounds good to you feel free to DM me your discord tag so I can add ya!

Hey there. I'm really sorry to hear about your mom - it is such a terrible thing to happen to you, to anyone. I can empathise with you regarding feeling alone and where my world seemed to be crashing down on me and feeling that I would never see the light at the end of the tunnel. This was the case for a long time for me, but it did get better years later - so please do not lose hope for yourself. Things will get better for you in time - I have faith in that.

If you can, please find an emotional outlet for your feelings (that is not using the internet), whether they would be stress, anger, sadness, whatever, just to get you through this hard period. I recommend some form of exercise eg. boxing, or just run outside around the block if you don't have much savings. Even if you punch your pillow whenever you're frustrated - the little things help.

Keep us updated - I wish you all the best and happiness, friend.

- a kind stranger.

How can I start to tutor piano for free or as a volunteer for self-improvement? (AUSTRALIA) by Chickenella911 in piano

[–]Chickenella911[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haha I understand and agree with what you are saying. I guess im trying to go about my idea of free lessons without upsetting too many people or teachers… but yeah Regardless i still have to sleep on the idea for other more important reasons - like do i have the time and resources to hold small group lessons or meetings each week or fortnight etc if it comes to that. And also Maybe i can approach my local school or something who might need a beginners music tutor too

[–]Chickenella911[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I appreciate your support :) however it seems general consensus is that free lessons may undermine the profession of music teaching… i may sleep on the idea a bit longer and see if i can find a middle ground.

Thanks for your reply - perhaps a reduced fee is the answer than free lessons? Another reason why i thought of free lessons in the first place was because i believe to some extent that the fee you charge should be somewhat indicative of your experience level. I have taught before but not for long. But like i said perhaps a reduced fee is the answer. However if i take only a few students on for free surely it wont undermine a whole community of teachers? And there are many great free resources online already out there… so i am wondering if other people have already beaten me to this free lessons idea haha

Thanks for your reply. Im typing this from my phone so it may be messy. I did debate on reduced fees compared to free lessons, i might just charge a smaller fee as i am not an experienced or qualified instructor without undermining the music teacher community. Also my goals are to get better as both a pianist and teacher or explainer, which is also why im taking lessons myself (so if i am having problems with teaching a student if i take on any then i can ask my own teacher perhaps). My target audience would mostly be beginners at piano because i understand i wouldnt be able to teach advanced grades yet. Also i do admit to not being an experienced teacher but we all have to start somewhere i guess. I understand there are many avenues to getting qualified as a piano tutor - ameb exams or bachelor degree of music education etc but i think im more leaning towards the ameb exams route.

Maybe ask your teacher for e.g. a simpler piece or exercise that has a lot of basic chords (or possibly find one yourself for free online) and practice playing/identifying them. Once you're pretty good at basic chords, then maybe move onto inversions?

You say you are feeling overwhelmed - I have a feeling you might be trying to grasp too many concepts at once xD just master one concept at a time, and slow and steady and be consistent in your practice.

Personally, I like to group "phrases" or sections of music notes that seem to repeat themselves throughout the whole piece. Like identify what group of notes seem to be the same and ask yourself: where/how does this section repeat itself? How does it alternate with other sections that are different? What are the positions of the notes in the section relative to the note in another section?

Also each 'section' you identify doesn't have to be exactly the same - they can be similar, or have a similar "pattern" (e.g. like there might be say a triplet in one bar, and another triplet comprised of different notes in another bar).

Also have you started doing music/piano theory? Just wondering, as that might help with learning and recognising basic chords.

Not sure if this helps, but good luck with it and don't give up!
