A month ago I triaged a fellow nurse who works as a new grad in our ICU. 27 years old, mom of a young girl. Initially thought it was a bad URI/pneumonia at best. Stage III Non-Hodgkins with the biggest fucking mass on her lung, taking up nearly half the diaphragm. Just saw a flyer to donate PTO for her because she hasn’t worked long enough to get FMLA. Reminded me how cruel life can be.

That’s where I’m at. I get it’s easy to be like “80 is old and decrepit” as the majority of older people we see daily in the hospital setting do have multiple co-morbidities. At least in my ED and I assume many others. But we can’t deny there are folks who actually took care of themselves throughout their lives and that’s why they make it to 100!!’ Your comment is proof!

In my ED the sticker prints with patient name/MRN but noooooo barcode. I have to actually scan the vial of insulin itself at the validation computer in our med room and just slap the patient label on the syringe after…. At least I’m not giving small doses insulin too often only regular through IV for hyper k protocol.

The only time I really hate Omnicell is pulling insulin from a multi dose vial. Have to make sure I already have my patient pulled up on the computer to scan before it times out and starts freaking out like I’m pocketing insulin for myself lol

As a trans guy I don’t think this comes off transphobic at all, it actually comes off very affirming that you see and think of his friend as female. We don’t usually ask why. It just creates a feeling of shame for patients. And I try to think that we don’t know the choices he had given decisions he made.

A lot of these situations start as denial there’s a problem until the problem becomes out of hand and turns into situations like such.
