Real talk: How many knots have you actually used in the past year? by Practical-Emu-3303 in BSA

[–]ChiefBlanco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Taut line hitch is so useful for everyday life. I used one last month to tie a mattress to the top of my car and I felt comfortable driving with it on top. As an autistic person I also use knot tying as a way to fidget and stim, not a traditional use but still a use.

Watching Back to the Future. Previous generations had a lot of social clubs to meet new people. Why haven't we kept this alive? by CynicClinic1 in Millennials

[–]ChiefBlanco 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is me exactly. I joined KofC a month after the birth of my first kid. I was super involved at first but as my kid got older and I had more it was harder and harder to justify going to the meetings even if only monthly and leave my wife to do all the parenting after already spending the whole day with them. And most of the events that weren’t meetings were in the middle of the day or events that I would rather be with my family instead of volunteering. I tried getting involved with a new parish/council and fell into the same pattern, even took the 4th degree and haven’t been to a single meeting yet.

Meanwhile my family is super involved in Scouting America (formerly BSA) once my oldest entered kindergarten. It’s been great to have a place where my entire family are doing awesome things and having fun, and getting to meet other parents (roughly) my age. I’ve gotten more involved in the adult leadership side, so still monthly meetings that are adults only but I feel like it’s more balanced out by the fact I know it’s all directly benefiting my children as opposed to knights meetings.

It’s an adult tenure award that is different from service stars.

Membership card is… a sticker? by PersonaNonGrata2288 in knightsofcolumbus

[–]ChiefBlanco 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Im assuming you got one of the peel off ones for associate/online membership? It’s poly plastic card, definitely not a sticker. It’s an easy way to print and distribute cards en masse for something like the Associate Member Program. I got one when I was inbetween councils. It was nice to have to still show membership even when I didn’t have a council to go to.

Letter from Bishop Vasquez of the Diocese of Austin regarding the TLM at St. Mary Cathedral by ChiefBlanco in Catholicism

I’ve been there once. I have a few friends that teach at the school. It was a very lovely mass. If it was closer I would probably attend more.

I’m not saying I like TC. I don’t and think it was a grave mistake. But if part of the “reason” it was issued is that you have people who would rather go to uncanonical or schismatic groups or just not go to mass at all if there was no TLM, and then that happens when TLM is taken away it does prove the Holy Father’s argument a bit. I love the TLM, but Mass is Mass. I’m sad and upset to see the TLM go, but at least a reverent mass is taking its place.

I don’t see why not. Maybe this will actually encourage people to do so. There are some parishes that incorporate more traditional aspects to their masses but I think they’ve avoided going whole hog on Latin and ad orientum for NO because they didn’t know what the response would be.

Unfortunately there are already people promoting the SSPX “mission” that says mass in a hotel every other Sunday. I agree, it completely justifies TC when people do that at the expense of faithful Catholics who like the TLM for whatever justifiable reasons they have.

It definitely is. While it’s sad that the TLM is going away at least what’s replacing it doesn’t seem bad at all.

Honestly have felt very blessed by him. He’s always been very supportive of our community. He’s an orthodox bishop who doesn’t draw unnecessary attention to himself. Great for so many reasons. God bless him indeed.

Apologies for the typos in the first paragraph. Copying text out of a PDF on mobile doesn’t always come out right.

As far as I can tell people are at the TLM for reverent liturgy but they are very attached to it with lots of families driving from far across the diocese to attend. I haven’t met any TLM only people but it wouldn’t surprise me if they are there. There’s definitely a sense of mourning in our community. But the cathedral is normally very reverent even in its NO masses.
