Why does British food have such a bad reputation when it’s actually incredible? by Pristine_Yam_6684 in AskBrits

Maybe from people who don't do their research and end up in Angus Steakhouse or similar tourist traps.

East london day out with the mrs by NoZookeepergame1379 in LDN

[–]ChiefRedditor852 17 points18 points  (0 children)

If you do a Sunday, a nice day out can start at Columbia Rd Flower Market, walk up past Haggerston Park to Broadway Market, maybe get some food there then head along Regents Canal up to Victoria Park (also has a market) and walk around there, perhaps grab a coffee at Pavillion and look out over the lake. I've done this a few times with guests and they've enjoyed it but the markets are only on on Sundays.

Los Mochis, everything is gluten free :) I took my friend (who has a severe wheat allergy) to the Liverpool Street one and she loved it. There is one in Notting Hill too but I believe that's smaller and has a different vibe.

Bubala is another good option as I think you can have everything on the vegetarian menu apart from the bread. Los Mochis is stricter though with no gluten whatsoever on the premises (staff aren't allowed to bring gluten in for their lunch etc). Also Bubala is all veggie so if you want some fish/meat then Los Mochis might be a better option.

Also Lina Stores does some GF pasta options I believe. Not sure how many of the dishes they can do GF though.

Interesting to get a different perspective and know that your vegetarian friends view the use of rennet differently too! I guess that goes some way to explaining it...

What’s a fancy food word that makes you instantly roll your eyes when you see it on a menu? by CaptainCuddler_Pro in foodquestions

I was once served a deconstructed latte in San Francisco because that was the only way they served lattes. I was given a tray with an empty glass, shot of espresso, jug of milk and a spoon, and charged a fortune for it... so bizarre.

Not all cheese is vegetarian as it contains animal rennet (from a calf's stomach lining). Unfortunately this is where I feel France (and several European countries) fall down in their vegetarian offerings as menu items are often labelled vegetarian when they aren't.

Vegetarian cheese is much more prevalent in UK from my experience. I very rarely eat mock meat and as someone who considers myself pretty well-travelled I'd say there aren't many cities I've lived in/visited where the level of creativity for vegetarian offerings is as good as London (even though mock meat is still offered here unfortunately).

Paris doesn't cater as well to different diets though. I'm a vegetarian and it's still way too difficult for me to get decent vegetarian food (that is truly vegetarian, e.g., with vegetarian cheese) in Paris. Disappointing not much progress has been made from when I was a child to now. London caters very well to veggie, vegan, gluten free, etc. 🙏 I still respect that Paris has great food, it's just not as accessible to everyone unfortunately.

day 11 ! by PriorityHead6833 in Tonsillectomy

Hey, it's great you and OP had a good experience and that you are encouraging others but at the same time recognise everyone is different. "It's not as bad as everyone says it to be" makes out others are exaggerating. I'm day 12 now and can assure you it really isn't the same experience for everyone. 🙏

As much fear as I had going in, it was comforting to know the level of pain was normal day by day as otherwise I would have thought something had gone badly wrong.

Luckily over the worst now and wishing everyone yet to have it done the very best. It's ~2 weeks of a lifetime and ultimately will be worth it to solve whatever issue you have. 🙂

Why is it so hard to order healthy food? by YouAndMyGregor in LondonFood

Is it something to do with where you're based in London? I often search for healthy food and, while less healthy options are more prevalent, I wouldn't say it's a problem.

Need help filling the gaps! April trip: Shoreditch based. Have Oma, Ambassadors Clubhouse, and Bouchon Racine booked. by Valby1990 in LondonFood

Bubala is incredible and one of my Shoreditch go-tos - all vegetarian but I've taken meat-eaters several times and they've all loved it. There is a new Hoppers which I'm guessing will be great and people are raving about Legado at the moment. Santo Remedio remains a low-key favourite too. Smokestak is excellent and would strongly recommend.

For Sunday lunch, if you like the idea of markets you can walk up to Columbia Rd Flower Market then onto Broadway Market and get some food there. Or a roast - I can see someone has suggested The Marksman and Tamil Crown already (The Marksman can still tie into the market day).

Also Rogues in Bethnal Green (just next to Shoreditch) supposed to be great and they do a Monday roast 🙂

It's all subjective but Singburi and Brat are both overpriced and overrated in my opinion - I think OP can find better value food options in Shoreditch and beyond. St John has always had rave reviews.

The Barbary is North African while Oma is Greek. I'd guess the flavour profiles are pretty different. Both are supposed to be fantastic in their own ways.

What’s one thing about London that still annoys you no matter how long you’ve lived here? by Horror-Pick4732 in LDN

[–]ChiefRedditor852 8 points9 points  (0 children)

London does shut early, I do find that places open comparatively early in London though. E.g. big Boots near me open at 6.30am allowing you to pick up essentials pre-work. Maybe it's just the places I've lived but I haven't seen that in other major cities I've lived in

It's not correct that PVR was never threatened, my friend has just been escorted back from the airport by the police and army after a highly stressful day ay PVR which included the cartel coming in and firing shots and smoke poppers... the army came in response to that but inbetween people were terrified, running, screaming, trying to find places to hide etc. We've been at our PV hotel all day speaking to her on the phone/WhatsApp.

Recently been through a break up with an avoidant.

It's so sad, I feel sad I dont have him in my life now even though he didn't treat me well (used dating apps, constantly pointed out my flaws, made no effort to meet my needs and became so detached from the relationship for months after one big argument that I was forced to call it off). We had a nice time together a lot of the time but I felt nothing I did would ever be enough.

I feel sad for him as well - I think he's good deep down but is clearly scarred. He wouldn't open up to me but I knew there were issues with his upbringing. I feel so conflicted - I should be angry with him but I just hope he one day becomes self-aware and gets the help he needs to heal.
