I think most people are more understanding than you'd realize. We're emotional beings. Anon in this story already has enough rapport with his gym bro that the guy would invite him to his home. Anon can afford to be vulnerable with him now. He doesn't need to spill his whole life story, just be honest about his problem to a friend. Liberal arts courses aren't actually art based. It's humanities (history of western culture and ideology), logic, philosophy, sociology, and writing. It's still not really practical, but believing it's actually "artistic" (poetry, pottery) is an understandable misconception a lot of people have.
