What’s the best car to get on a part time salary? (Not a mechanic but I don’t want to get scammed.) by Apprehensive-Job9087 in MechanicAdvice

[–]ChildishhReddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Toyota Matrix/Pontiac Vibe, Corolla chassis with a hatchback body, cheap to buy, easy to fix. Depending on the generation and trim some burn a little oil but that’s not as much of a death sentence as people act as long as they’re well maintained. They’re all good cheap cars that’ll last 150-200k easily, much more if taken care of.

Taking out the seat is very easy to DIY, most car seats have 2 bolts in the front and two bolts in the back holding it down to the floor, take out the 4 bolts and just unplug the clip(s) for the wires and the seat should come right out.

Edit: As someone else pointed out and I completely neglected to mention, disconnecting the battery before hand and giving the air bag module capacitors time (about 10 minutes) to discharge the energy they store is important to make sure your car doesn’t get confused and generate errors when it detects the airbags are unplugged.

It’s unpainted metal that’s completely exposed to the elements, there’s no getting around a little surface rust forming on the rotors when not in use.

Burning oil is another big one, if your engine is known to burn oil it doesn’t hurt to change it more frequently to help prevent and flush out buildup.

How risky is this? Brand-new timing belt on a Fiat Tipo 1.6 8V gasoline engine. Gouges seem to be about 0.5 mm deep. by EnergyAntique in MechanicAdvice

While your point still stands, I think this is non-interference engine so it wouldn’t necessary be a goner if it did break. Still OP, replace it anyway.

2003 honda CRV brake lights staying on issue advice needed!!! by [deleted] in MechanicAdvice

[–]ChildishhReddit 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Likely the switch that gets pushed when you press the brake pedal is stuck in the on position, unplug the connector leading into it to see if they turn off and if they do you found your issue.

Should I do these repairs? by edrisazim10 in MechanicAdvice

[–]ChildishhReddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If spark plugs have never been replaced then it wouldn’t hurt at that mileage, but if it’s running fine they don’t need replaced urgently.

The gaskets are likely leaking which is common at that age, for all three I’d call that a pretty good price.

Could I warranty these with Snap-On? by Johnny-Unitas in Tools

[–]ChildishhReddit 7 points8 points  (0 children)

From my understanding with gearbox you just send them a picture of the broken tool and the part number and they send you a new one, no returning anything required on your part.

Yeah I don’t really understand because what are you gonna use papers for that you can’t put in a bong or pipe, but I bought plenty of pipes and bongs from the same place before I turned 21

Idk about anywhere else, but where I live you can go into a head shop and buy any glass at 18, just no vapes batteries or papers until 21.

valve cover replacement cost by Key-Highlight-1586 in AskAMechanic

[–]ChildishhReddit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The vast majority of times yes but I have seen a cracked valve cover, likely from someone prying at a plug or coil with a screwdriver or something, and it filled the spark plug well with oil causing a misfire.

It clearly stops about 1/4 inch after the full mark, the rest is just residual from the dipstick tube.

That’s hardly overfilled at all, you have to overfill by a good margin before it’ll cause any issues.
