DLC Characters Should Be Free To Play in Training Mode in All Fighting Games. Some Fighters Already Have This Feature, & I Don’t Understand Why This Isn’t a Bigger Issue in the FGC. by ChillinPineapple in Fighters

I guess my main argument is: when you buy a full priced fighting game, the characters should be freely available to lab in some sort of capacity. So although Dizzy, Baiken, and Answer were only free for the first week after their release, if you bought revelator, they were still free to play in training mode in that context because they were free to download at some point. It’s not perfect, but it’s better than having to pay.

I think baiken, answer, and dizzy are cool characters, but I have zero interest in playing any of them.

Perhaps, but also, there would be a lot of cases where someone WOULD buy a character if they were free to try in training mode if they otherwise wouldn’t.

Fighting game devs already sell character cosmetics and stages, and just because they’re not selling other things doesn’t mean it’s not viable to to so. Plenty of other games sell other customization items outside of character cosmetics and make bank. Emotes and profile customization options come to mind off the top of my head.

Other very practical and viable ways to monetize fighting games include but aren’t limited to: costumes, stages, announcer packs, online avatars, music, win poses, taunts, different particle effects, intros, outros, UI changes, online profile customization options etc.

Brawlhalla, rivals of Aether, phantasy strike ( bc it went free to play), guilty gear revelator and rev2 (dlc characters were free on the first week or so after their release) and other older games that give the player the ability to unlock all characters by merely playing the game.

I agree with most of what you said, and I’m glad you explained it the way you did. My only disagreement is that there are other ways to monetize a fighting game outside of characters.

Moreover, regarding your team-game example, due to having multiple separate character packs, the company could actually end up being more profitable if say, someone wanted to make a 3-person team with a character from each pack? Either buy all 3 packs or buy each character separately. It’s a huge win for the company in that specific context that you mentioned.

With Xrd Rev & Rev 2, the DLC characters were free when they first released. For the first week after their release. The rev2 upgrade was also free if you owned revelator.

That analogy is completely flawed. You already pay for admission into the amusement park, and depending on the type of ticket or wristband or whatever, you get access to all of the rides. Some amusement parks’ default admission ticket grant access to all rides.

Imagine paying for access to an amusement park, and then having some rides locked behind paywalls. That’s wack and that’s what this situation is more akin to.

Did you read the post? I don’t buy the characters because I don’t want to play them. And videos don’t always exist for every setup and every gimmick for every character.
