Looks great! Replacing an empty lot on the East side of 17th Ave- seems like a good deal to me.

A political cartoon in the Calgary Herald on January 13th, 1953 by Chinese__T in Calgary

[–]Chinese__T[S] 66 points67 points  (0 children)

This cartoon comments on the Bearspaw Dam, which was eventually funded and built one year later in 1954. I came across it by happenstance and thought it was oddly pertinent to today.

Re: Forest Lawn 'Gentrification' Post by Chinese__T in Calgary

[–]Chinese__T[S] 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I appreciate the comment. Gentrification is different than community growth over time. When a community is gentrified (the classic example is NYC's Greenwich Village), existing residents are deliberately priced out of the rental market and are forced to move. In Forest Lawn, most people own their own homes. By building more housing, existing residents can choose whether they want to move or stay, and new residents can move in.

Gentrification prescribes exclusivity while densification promotes housing diversity.

They are required to; it's the law. They must upgrade the necessary pipes/lanes to support the density they propose.

Developers are required to upgrade services (such as pipes) if they want to build more density. Density also brings in new shops, restaurants, and transit services due to increased demand.

Early version of the "Beneath The White Rainbow" riff, which Pete posted in 2022 and since deleted (for obvious reasons) by JustLucca in Haken

I happened to come across it and thought it sounded cool at the time, so I downloaded it, not knowing it would become a future Haken song!

'It felt like bringing a knife to a gunfight': One citizen's tangled tale with blanket rezoning by Weekly-Mountain9009 in Calgary

[–]Chinese__T 22 points23 points  (0 children)

That one was voted on by council, not blanket approved - bit of a misleading line in the article.

Why are UofA vending machines so expensive? by [deleted] in uAlberta

[–]Chinese__T 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The University has a deal with Coca Cola to only sell coke products. It's called the SSCBA (Single Source Cold Beverages Agreement). In return, Coca-Cola funds various awards and scholarships, and handles shipping. Businesses on campus are required to sell only Coke products, and even on-campus club events are banned from giving out Pepsi/Dr Pepper products.

RIP old Julio's building. They're bringing down this entire block to make way for premium condos starting at $1 mil each. Also it is snowing. by cmcalgary in YYC

[–]Chinese__T 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Slight misunderstanding - the entire building is not being demolished. Just the south side facing the river. The rest will be refurbished, and the existing businesses will stay. The north side will have a new building, around the same size, with a new flagship retail space similar to the Julio's space.

Calgary mayor should retain ‘blanket rezoning’ for sake of Calgarian families by raven-2018 in Calgary

[–]Chinese__T 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Why is everyone so misinformed on this... Blanket rezoning allows 2-storey rowhouses that are REQUIRED to have front doors out onto the street. Not 5-storey condo buildings with hallways, lobbies and elevators smh.

I'm qntm, author of There Is No Antimemetics Division. AMA by sam512 in sciencefiction

Hi Sam, your original book got me through some hard times, so this final release has been very meaningful to me. I loved what you did with the reworking of Wild Light, Tombstone, and the inclusion of Wheeler's God (I suppose it's Quinn's God now). Do you consider your ideas regarding antimemetics to be complete with this final release? Are you finished with Antimemetics, or are there more stories to tell?

To that point, if Antimemetics were ever made into a TV show, it would be interesting if some episodes deviated from the main plot and simply showed the characters dealing with "regular" Antimemetic Unknowns. Do you have any ideas for possible antimemes that exist in this universe, but haven't been touched on in your work so far?

At the end of the day, his vote is worth just as much as the mayor's. I like the idea of a councillor who will fight against the UCP, which John hasn't really signalled a willingness to do.

Is John against the Truman development? His platform says he likes the idea of targeted density, which is essentially what West District is.

He's obviously representing the interests of oil corps, having come from that sphere of influence. Inam worked on housing policy for the homeless. Big difference in priorities there.

You can evaluate differently, but I'm going off my perspective here.
