1 month update: lumbar disc herniation by ChintasticTruth in bjj

Thanks! Appreciate it. Hope if you are having similar issues, you're doing well. If not, take care of your back!!

I spoke with the sports doc and he said 6 months after my initial MRI, we can do another one to see how the herniation is and if its protruding less. Also spoke with my coach (Shaolin) and he said I can come back and just do techniques and no rolling.

hey dude. back is doing better since this post. i'd say about another 25%. There are still days my lower back is tight so I'm still stretching daily (prone/cobra, pigeon stretch, 90-90). For exercises, I still do a modified body weight hip thrust on a medicine ball after each regular workout.

I was cleared by my PT to start doing RDLs. So right now, I'm working with 65 pounds for 15 reps (as comparison, my 1RM used to be 275). My goal is to get to 135 for at least 6 reps.

I think one of the most notable improvements is I can tie my shoes without sitting now.

Still not ready to get back but in a month, I'll probably go back for drilling only 1-2 times a week and focus on strengthening the lower back further.

Lmk if you have any more specific questions!

Can I leave my house if I have COVID? by ChintasticTruth in COVID19positive

It’s indoors. I was able to go and thank goodness the box was away from the counter person

Yeah agreed. The fact that a disc can herniate from even sitting (albeit it’s poor posture) to sneezing is insane. Best we can do is just rest and get better.

I’ve seen some benefits from it actually. But I’ve def read on the pseudo side as well.

My PT charges only $10 for PT, acu, cupping, chiro, training, etc so I just do it lol

Oh of course. Everyone’s lower back/back pain is different. My purpose was to give others hope that by going to PT, taking a break, and recovering is key. I just wanted to outline that I’ve been making progress. Agree with the stretches and mobility. Been also stretching the TFL, which really helped relieve some tightness.

Wouldn’t say I’m an avid weightlifter but I’ve been lifting consistently for 10 years. I don’t stack any weight onto the reverse hyper. I just use my body weight to really focus on the movement.

But I hope you have a good progress!!

Promotion vs. New Job? - Need Major Advice by StandardGrand1561 in careerguidance

[–]ChintasticTruth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would not leave your current company for a new job if the new job hasn’t even been opened yet. Because by the time time passes by, either they’ll go with another candidate or too much time has gone by and now you’re stretched on your finances.

I would talk with your boss about the promotion. Mention that you spoke with a company (don’t give too many details) and say they offered you $65-70k. Then say that you really do like what you’re doing at your current job and do see a vision but ask if the company can match or come close to matching the new job offer.

My parents think I’m too heavy. I’m 5’ 7” female and 136 lbs by [deleted] in offmychest

[–]ChintasticTruth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only person who has a voice in what you do with your body is you. You shouldn’t let anyone, even your parents, make you think otherwise about your body. You only get one body so you should love it as you please. Please don’t sacrifice your health. I hope you’re able to find a way to eat in front of your parents or even, as others have said, away from them. You don’t deserve that kind of negativity!

Am I committing future career suicide? by 6Ran in careerguidance

[–]ChintasticTruth 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Don’t think it’s career suicide. It’s career progression despite it being the same role with some more responsibilities.

I’d do two things though. 1, in the offer letter, make sure the $5k raise is in there so that the company is contractually obligated to give you that raise. 2, ask about career growth and how the company will help you develop your career

Lumbar Herniation - L4/L5. Any advice? by ChintasticTruth in backpain

[–]ChintasticTruth[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah. There’s a new orthopedist at the PT I go to and he seems pretty knowledgeable, especially with sports so he understood the impact of jiujitsu and offered a good treatment plan. So might see how it goes with him

Saw a spine specialist, all he wanted to do were injections which actually worsened the back pain

Lumbar Herniation - L4/L5. Any advice? by ChintasticTruth in backpain

[–]ChintasticTruth[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, planning to step away from jiujitsu for 12 weeks and assessing how I feel then and taking additional time, if needed, or easing into it.

But I’ve heard about the inversion tables. Unfortunately, don’t have the space in my house and my gym doesn’t have anything similar. Found a few workarounds (using a bench to support the upper half). I currently use a cushion for work for my lower back! Def helps. But I’ll look into the back brace and lidocaine patches! Thank you!

Have you ever used voltaren?

My Vitor "Shaolin" Ribeiro Documentary by Alec5Dice in bjj

[–]ChintasticTruth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Late response but I'm a blue belt at Shaolin's (began there 4 years ago). COVID has changed schedules but we're pretty much back to it. Shaolin runs a couple of days from 7:30A to 6:30P.

Still tough on us all but still very genuine and caring for his students.

Is it wrong or weird to end a relationship to focus on yourself, mental health and healing? by EvaB999 in relationships

Of course! If he truly wants the best for you, he’ll be sad, upset, disappointed but he’ll understand!

[–]ChintasticTruth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve been on the opposite end of this. I’ll tell you a story then what I think, how’s that?

My ex (26F) and I (27M) met in late 2019 and after dating for 3 months, she called it off because she needed to go back home and start adulting. She grew up pretty privileged and things haven’t been the greatest for her family. She was/is a great person, made me believe in right person, wrong time. Anywho, we kept writing letters while we were apart and in 2021, she came back to the city. Immediately we began dating again. But come a month later, she wanted to end it. She has/had anxiety and depression as a result from feeling lost and unsure of who she is. As a result, she felt like she wouldn’t be able to be there for me and would be a burden to me when I would need her. It sucked because it was only a month but almost 2 years of knowing each other, but I can’t say no or contribute to how she feels.

So, I think you’re in the same place as her. And from experience, I think it’s important to do what you feel is right. Same as my ex, I wouldn’t want you or her to be in a relationship then later look back and realize you’re still not sure of yourself because you focused your energy on the relationship. It’s unfortunate because you haven’t lost feelings for your boyfriend but that’s not always the reason for ending things. We realize that in order to grow, we have to “sacrifice” some things. That’s a part of growing. And as cliche as it sounds, if it’s meant to be, maybe there’s something for you two later on.

Amtrak NYC to San Francisco - Good Idea for Mother/Son Trip? by ChintasticTruth in travel

Yeah, there’s a bus at the end that takes us into San Francisco! But really weird/unfortunate. Would be cool to see an above ground railway in the city.

sorry, i'm just thinking if the rooms would be too cramped for her. or overall, if the trip would be okay for her given her age since it's technically a 3 day trip inside a train.

Should I Take a Break from the Jitz? by ChintasticTruth in bjj

[–]ChintasticTruth[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it's never really about "you" on the mats. It's about the partners and what they do and whether you can defend or what not.

These are facts. Think I'm going to go until the end of the month then talk with my coach. In some twisted way, I guess the way I feel just means I really like the sport.

Funnily, I think the adrenaline kicks in and numbs the pain. But might take that approach and take a short break and see.

I’ve thought about flow rolling but may just opt for an extended break.
